Claims
- 1. An article carrier mountable to a vehicle surface, said carrier comprising:
- a frame having a pair of side rails for retaining articles within said carrier;
- a plurality of adjustable support stanchions mounted to the vehicle surface, said stanchions having a pivot arm connected to said frame to selectively move said frame between a lowered stored position substantially flush with the vehicle surface and an elevated position spaced apart from the vehicle surface; and
- a locking prong positioned within said side rails of said frame and a manually rotatable bolt extending through said pivot arm for selectively locking said adjustable support stanchions relative to the vehicle surface and said frame, said manually rotatable bolt extending laterally through an end of said stanchions connected to said frame and threadably attached to said locking prong for selectively locking said frame in both said lower stored position and an elevated position spaced apart from the vehicle surface, wherein rotation of said bolt in a first direction causes said locking prong to engage said pivot arm for selectively locking said stanchions to said frame in both said lowered and elevated position to prevent adjustment of said frame and rotation of said bolt in a second direction causes said locking prong to disengage from said pivot arm for selective movement of said frame.
- 2. The carrier as defined in claim 1 wherein said adjustable support stanchions include a stanchion base mounted to the vehicle surface and a pivot arm, a first end of said arm pivotably connected to said base and a second end of said arm pivotably connected to one of said side rails of said frame.
- 3. The carrier as defined in claim 2 wherein said stanchion base nestably receives said pivot arm when said frame is lowered to its stored position substantially flush with the vehicle surface.
- 4. The carrier as defined in claim 2 wherein said locking means includes a manually rotatable bolt extending through said pivot arm relative to said frame and loosening said bolt releases said arm for pivotable adjustment relative said frame.
- 5. The carrier as defined in claim 4 wherein said locking prong selectively locks said stanchions and frame in the lower position and the elevated position.
- 6. An article carrier mountable to a vehicle surface, said carrier comprising:
- a peripheral frame for retaining articles within said carrier, said frame selectively adjustable between a lower stored position substantially flush with the vehicle surface and an elevated position spaced from the vehicle surface;
- a plurality of adjustable support stanchions mounted to the vehicle surface and connected to said frame, said support stanchions including a stanchion base mounted to the vehicle surface and a pivot arm, a first end of said pivot arm pivotably connected to said base and a second end of said arm pivotably connected to said frame whereby pivotable adjustment of said arm will move said frame between said lowered and elevated positions; and
- unitary means for selectively locking said second end of said pivot arm of said adjustable support stanchions to said frame preventing vertical adjustment of said frame relative to the vehicle surface, said unitary locking means including a locking prong extending laterally into said second end of said pivot arm from said frame and a manually rotatable bolt threadably attached to said locking prong wherein rotation of said bolt in a first direction causes said locking prong to engage said pivot arm for selectively locking said frame in both said lower stored position and an elevated position spaced apart from the vehicle surface and rotation of said bolt in a second direction causes said locking prong to disengage from said pivot arm for selective movement of said frame.
- 7. An article carrier mountable to a vehicle surface, said carrier comprising
- a frame having a pair of side rails for retaining articles within said carrier;
- a plurality of adjustable support stanchions mounted to the vehicle surface, said stanchions include a stanchion base mounted to the vehicle surface and a pivot arm, a first end of said arm pivotably connected to said base and a second end of said arm pivotably connected to said frame to selectively move said frame between a lower stored position substantially flush with the vehicle surface and an elevated position spaced apart from the vehicle surface; and
- means for selectively locking said adjustable support stanchions relative to the vehicle surface and said frame, said locking means including a locking prong positioned within said side rails of said frame and threadably attached to a manually rotatable bolt extending through said pivot arm such that rotation of said bolt in a first direction to tighten said locking means causes said locking prong to lockingly engage said pivot arm and rotation of said bolt in a second direction to loosen said locking means causes said locking prong to disengage from said pivot arm for selective movement of said frame.
- 8. The carrier as defined in claim 7 wherein said locking prong selectively locks said stanchions and frame in the lower position and the elevated position.
- 9. The carrier as defined in claim 7 wherein said stanchion base nestably receives said pivot arm when said frame is lowered to its stored position substantially flush with the vehicle surface.
- 10. An article carrier mountable to a vehicle surface, said carrier comprising:
- a frame for retaining articles within said carrier;
- a plurality of adjustable support stanchion mounted to the vehicle surface, said stanchions connected to said frame to selectively support said frame in elevated spaced-apart relation to the vehicle surface; and
- unitary means for selectively locking at least one of said adjustable stanchions to said frame, said unitary locking means including a locking prong positioned within said frame and selectively extending into an end of said stanchion connected to said frame, said locking prong threadably attached to a manually rotatable bolt such that rotation of said bolt in a first direction to tighten said locking means causes said locking prong to engage said stanchion for selectively locking said support stanchion to said frame in both a lower stored position and said elevated position.
- 11. The carrier as defined in claim 10 wherein said adjustable support stanchions include a stanchion base mounted to the vehicle surface and a pivot arm, said stanchion bases of said support stanchions nestably receiving said pivot arm when said frame is lowered to its stored position.
