Claims
- 1. A luminaire comprising a panel of a light-transmitting material, the panel including a light emission window, a rear wall opposite said light emission window and edge surfaces between the light emission window and the rear wall, at least one of the edge surfaces of the panel being light transmitting, one or more light sources being associated with one of the at least one light-transmitting edge surfaces, said one or more light sources being the only source of light associated with the edge surfaces; in operation, light originating from said one or more light sources being incident on said one of the at least one light-transmitting edge surfaces and spreading in the panel; in the panel a plurality of discontinuously varying deformities of two or more deformity shapes being provided for coupling light out of the panel via the light emission window; said deformities being arranged in at least one cluster so as to form at least a portion of one light symbol; and each of the said two or more deformity shapes being chosen from the group formed by a triangular prism, a tetrahedron, a quadrilateral pyramid and a cone.
- 2. A luminaire comprising a panel of a light-transmitting material, the panel including a light emission window, a rear wall opposite said light emission window and edge surfaces between the light emission window and the rear wall, at least one of the edge surfaces of the panel being light transmitting, one or more light sources being associated with one of the at least one light-transmitting edge surfaces, said one or more light sources being the only source of light associated with the edge surfaces, and in operation, light originating from said one or more light sources being incident on said one of the at least one light-transmitting edge surfaces and spreading in the panel, wherein in the panel a plurality of discontinuously varying deformities of two or more deformity shapes are provided, said deformities coupling light out of the panel non-homogeneously and non-uniformly via the light emission window, said deformities being arranged in at least one cluster so as to form at least a portion of one light symbol.
- 3. A luminaire as claimed in claim 2, wherein a surface of at least one of the deformities in the panel is provided with a specularly reflecting surface.
- 4. A luminaire as claimed in claim 2, wherein the shape of at least one of the deformities is such that total internal reflection occurs in said at least one of the deformities.
- 5. A luminaire as claimed in claim 2, wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting diode.
- 6. A luminaire as claimed in claim 2, wherein the deformities are provided in the rear wall.
- 7. A light-emitting panel provided with deformities for use in a luminaire as claimed in claim 2.
- 8. A luminaire as claimed in claim 2 wherein at least one of the plurality of deformities in said at least one cluster is positioned to direct at least part of the light incident on said at least one cluster from the light emission window at a predetermined angle to the surface of the light emission window, whereby the at least a portion of the one light symbol is illuminated when viewed from said angle.
- 9. A luminaire comprising a panel of a light-transmitting material, the panel including a light emission window, a rear wall opposite said light emission window and edge surfaces between the light emission window and the rear wall, at least one of the edge surfaces being light transmitting, one of the at least one light transmitting edge surfaces being the only one of the edge surfaces through which light is directed, a light source illuminating an interior of the panel through said one of the at least one light transmitting edge surfaces, wherein a plurality of discontinuously varying deformities of two or more geometric shapes, each deformity being of predetermined dimensions, are arranged in the panel to form at least a portion of a light symbol, each said deformity directing light out of the panel at a predetermined angle with the surface of the light emission window and at a predetermined intensity.
- 10. A luminaire as claimed in claim 9 wherein a first plurality of deformities, each of said first plurality of deformities directing light out of the panel at a first predetermined angle with the surface of the light emission window, form a first cluster.
- 11. A luminaire as claimed in claim 10 wherein a second plurality of deformities, each of said second plurality of deformities directing light out of the panel at a second predetermined angle with the surface of the light emission window, form a second cluster.
- 12. A luminaire as claimed in claim 11, wherein the first cluster and the second cluster overlap.
- 13. A luminaire as claimed in claim 9, wherein each of the said two or more geometric shapes is chosen from the group formed by a triangular prism, a tetrahedron, a quadrilateral pyramid and a cone.
- 14. A luminaire as claimed in claim 9, wherein a surface of at least one the deformities is specularly reflecting.
- 15. A luminaire as claimed in claim 9, wherein the shape of at least one of the deformities is such that total internal reflection occurs in said at least one of the deformities.
