Claims
- 1. Process for coating a granular material with at least one water-insoluble polymer sealing layer comprising rotating a granular material to be coated to provide a cascading flow of said granular material, injecting a plurality of coating components separately into said cascading granular material at the top moving layer of said granular material while controlling separately the flow rate of each of said plurality of coating components which are injected into said rotating granules, and recovering said coated granular material wherein said granular material contains reactive functional groups; one of said coating components is a coupling agent having a functional group reactive with said granular material, and one of the coating components of said water-insoluble polymer is reactive with the functional groups of said coupling agent.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the granular material is urea.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said granular material is prewet with a solution comprising water and a catalyst.
- 4. The process of claim 3 wherein said pretreatment is with water, a catalyst material and a low molecular weight polyol.
- 5. The process of claim 4 wherein after a first layer of coating is applied, additional layers of coating material are applied including an intermediate wax layer.
- 6. Process for producing an attrition resistant controlled release fertilizer particulate composition comprising:
- (a) providing a water-soluble mass of plant food material;
- (b) prewetting said plant food material with a prewetting liquid;
- (c) rotating said plant food material of step (b) to provide a cascading flow of said plant food material;
- (d) contacting said cascading plant food material of step (c) above with a first reactive coating component by injecting said first reactive coating component into the top layer of said cascading flow of material; and
- (e) contacting said intermediate material of step (d) with a second reactive coating component by injecting said second coating component into the top layer of said cascading flow of material, said second reactive coating component containing functional groups reactive with said first reactive coating component to provide a water-insoluble layer.
- 7. The process of claim 6 wherein said prewetting liquid includes a reactive component which may be a catalyst.
- 8. The process of claim 7 wherein said reactive component of said prewetting liquid is triethanolamine, said first reactive coating component is an organic polyisocyanate, and said second reactive coating component is a polyol.
- 9. The process of claim 8 wherein said organic isocyanate is diphenylmethane diisocyanate and said polyol is polyethyleneterephthalate polyester polyol.
- 10. The process of claim 7 wherein said prewetting liquid of step (b) includes water.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said prewetting liquid of step (b) further includes a low molecular weight water-soluble polyol.
- 12. The process of claims 6 or 7 or 10 or 11 wherein said plant nutrient is urea.
