Claims
- 1. A method of machining a workpiece by a cutting tool, comprising:
- mounting said workpiece on a workhead;
- positioning defined locations of a shape to be machined on said mounted workpiece in a plane of interpolation by positioning said workhead about a first machining axis being a rotary axis and extending perpendicular to said plane of interpolation, positioning said workhead along a second rectilinear machining axis being an X-axis and extending parallel to said plane of interpolation, and positioning said workhead along a third rectilinear machining axis being a Y-axis and extending parallel to said plane of interpolation;
- arranging a working tool rotating about a tool axis with said tool axis being in a predetermined orientation with respect to said plane of interpolation; and
- controlling said positioning about said first machining axis and along said second and third rectilinear machining axes for obtaining a movement of said workhead in said plane of interpolation such that said workpiece is moved with respect to said working tool according to said shape to be machined.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which during machining a rotation axis of the cutting tool is inclined to the first axis.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the workhead is rotatable about said first axis and is rectilinearly displaceable along said second and third axis, and during machining the first axis moves along an arcuate path centered upon the center of curvature of said surface of the workpiece, and simultaneously therewith the workhead is rotated about said first axis at the same angular rate as the first axis moves about said center of curvature.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, comprising positioning of said tool axis with respect to said plane of interpolation in a predetermined angular relationship.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein said positioning of said tool axis is a rotation of said tool axis with respect to said plane of interpolation about a rotation axis.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein said rotation axis extends parallel to said plane of interpolation.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein said shape to be machined has an arcuate surface having a radius of curvature R and said workpiece is mounted on said workhead such that said surface thereon is positioned at a distance from said first machining axis which is different than said radius R.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, including positioning said second and third machining axes to cause said first machining axis to be moved along an arcuate path centered on the center of curvature of said arcuate surface of said workpiece and simultaneously positioning said first machining axis to cause said workhead to be rotated about said first machining axis at the same angular rate as said first machining axis is moved about said center of curvature.
