Claims
- 1. A machine for the harvesting of corn or similar stalk-like crops comprising a frame means, a cutting and supplying means mounted on said frame means and operable to cut said crop and convey the cut crop generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supplying means comprising a fixed knife means extending transversely to the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supply means further comprising endless chain means having portions extending generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, and chopping means mounted on said frame means in a position to receive said cut crop after the latter has been conveyed transversely by said cutting and supplying means, said cutting and supplying means further comprising a holding means, said holding means being carried by said chain means for pushing crop to be cut against said fixed cutting knife means for cutting said crop and for holding the cut crop in an inclined disposition as the cut crop is conveyed to said chopping means.
- 2. A machine according to claim 1, wherein said knife means is of the non-reciprocating type in that it comprises a cutting blade fixed to said frame, and said holding means is operable to push said crop against said fixed cutting blade to effect said cutting action.
- 3. A machine according to claim 1, wherein said holding means comprises a counter edge member, a portion of said counter edge member overlies and rests on said knife means and slides over said knife means when in operation.
- 4. A machine according to claim 3, wherein said knife means has a cutting edge, said counter edge member having a portion projecting beyond said cutting edge at an angle of about 40 degrees relative to said cutting edge.
- 5. A machine according to claim 4, wherein said counter edge member has a curved portion leading to said projecting portion, said projecting portion moving the cut crop into said curved position.
- 6. A machine according to claim 5, wherein said curved portion of said counter edge member is spaced from said cutting edge so that the crop is completely cut before the crop moves into said curved position.
- 7. A machine according to claim 5, further comprising a holding finger mounted on said chain means, said holding finger having a configuration similar to said counter edge member.
- 8. A machine according to claim 7, wherein said holding finger has a projecting portion and a curved portion, said curved portion of said holding finger being disposed rearwardly of the curved portion of said counter edge member considered in the conveying direction, said holding finger being disposed at a higher elevation than said counter edge member.
- 9. A machine according to claim 7, wherein said holding means further comprises a brace means, said brace means having a generally U-shaped configuration with the open part of the U facing said holding finger.
- 10. A machine according to claim 9, wherein one leg of said U is longer than the other leg, said longer leg being the upper leg, said longer leg having a serrated edge for engaging the cut crop.
- 11. A machine according to claim 9, wherein said holding means further comprises a torsion spring for engaging said cut crop.
- 12. A machine according to claim 11, wherein said torsion spring generally has the configuration of the Greek letter .zeta. and has an expended loop secured to said brace means.
- 13. A machine for the harvesting of corn or similar stalk-like crops comprising a frame means, a cutting and supplying means mounted on said frame means and operable to cut said crop and convey the cut crop generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supplying means comprising a fixed and non-reciprocating knife means extending transversely to the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supply means further comprising endless chain means having portions extending generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, and chopping means mounted on said frame means in a position to receive said cut crop after the latter has been conveyed transversely by said cutting and supplying means, said cutting and supplying means further comprising a holding means, said holding means being carried by said chain means for engaging and pushing the crop to be cut against said fixed and non-reciprocating knife means for cutting said crop and for holding the cut crop in an inclined disposition as the cut crop is conveyed to said chopping means.
- 14. A machine for the harvesting of corn or similar stalk-like crops comprising a frame means, a cutting and supplying means mounted on said frame means and operable to cut said crop and convey the cut crop generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supplying means comprising a fixed and non-reciprocating knife means extending transversely to the direction of travel of the machine, said cutting and supply means further comprising endless chain means having portions extending generally transversely of the direction of travel of the machine, and chopping means mounted on said frame means in a positio to receive said cut crop after the latter has been conveyed transversely by said cutting and supplying means, said cutting and supplying means further comprising a holding means, said holding means being carried by said chain means for engaging and pushing the crop to be cut against said fixed and non-reciprocating cutting knife means such that during the cutting action, the cut crop is displaced from a generally upright position to an inclined position in which the lower portion of the cut crop is disposed ahead of the upper portion in the direction of travel of said holding means, said holding means being operable to positively engage and hold said cut crop in said inclined dispositio and convey the engaged and cut crop to said chopping means.
- 15. Machine for the harvesting of corn or similar stalk-like crops, comprising an endless revolving chain carrying a drawing-in and conveying means which includes laterally projecting grippers, a fixed cutting means extending traversely of the direction of travel of the machine, said drawing-in and conveying apparatus conveying the stalks of the harvested crop, which have been cut by said cutting means which are caught by said grippers, essentially upright into a subsequently arranged chopping blower with a drawing-in roller, wherein the stalks are freed by the grippers as the chain returns, said drawing-in and conveying means and said cutting means extending at least approximately transversely to the driving direction of the machine and are combined in a parallel arrangement to each other into a unitary cutting/conveying apparatus which determines the working width.
