- an adapter follower spring located within said adapter magazine case on said adapter base;
- an adapter follower above and carried by said adapter follower spring; and
- adapter retaining means located at and extending laterally outwardly from the top of said adapter magazine case and sized to extend laterally under and engage the undersides of the firearm magazine feed lips at the top of the firearm magazine for holding said magazine case under the feed lips under pressure of the firearm magazine follower spring acting on said adapter base through the firearm magazine follower.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1 wherein said adapter follower is sloped upward toward the firearm barrel to feed cartridges upwardly into the barrel.
- 3. The improvement of claim 1 wherein said adapter retaining means is formed of a piece of material separate from said adapter magazine case.

The method of converting an at least partially automatic firearm to use a smaller size ammunition in which the firearm includes a removeable standard size magazine for the standard size ammunition, which firearm magazine is open at its top but has inwardly protuding feed lips at the magazine top and includes an internal follower spring and a vertically moveable follower above the follower spring, comprising the following steps:
- a. providing an adapter magazine including an adapter magazine case with a base, said case and base being sized to be removeably fit within the firearm magazine and to be longitudinally moveable back and forth within the firearm magazine;
- an adapter follower spring located within said adapter magazine case on said adapter base;
- an adapter follower above and carried by said adapter follower spring; and
- adapter retaining means located at and extending laterally outwardly from the top of said adapter magazine case and sized to extend laterally under and engage the undersides of the firearm magazine feed lips at the top of the firearm magazine for holding said magazine case under the feed lips under pressure of the firearm magazine follower spring acting on said adapter base through the firearm magazine follower;
- b. taking the standard firearm magazine separate from the firearm and manually inserting said adapter magazine into said firearm magazine through its top with said adapter bottom being pushed downwardly in contact with and against said firearm magazine follower and against the action of said firearm magazine follower spring;
- c. moving said adapter magazine longitudinally within said firearm magazine until said adapter retaining means is positioned under said inwardly projecting feed lips;
- d. releasing the manually applied downward pressure on said adapter magazine and allowing said firearm magazine follower spring to push up said adapter restraining means against the undersides of said inwardly projecting lips, holding said adapter magazine within said standard magazine; and
