Claims
- 1. A fastening tool for holding a plurality of fasteners and selectively installing a first one of the fasteners into a workpiece, the fastening tool comprising:
a fastening tool portion having a dispensing portion for dispensing a first one of the fasteners; and a magazine assembly for holding a portion of the fasteners, the magazine assembly being coupled to the fastening tool portion and positionable between a first position, wherein the magazine assembly is positioned to dispense the portion of fasteners into the dispensing portion, and a second position, wherein the magazine assembly is positioned so as to be incapable of dispensing the portion of the fasteners into the dispensing portion.
- 2. The fastening tool of claim 1, wherein the magazine assembly is translated relative to the dispensing portion when the magazine assembly is moved between the first and second positions.
- 3. The fastening tool of claim 2, wherein a pin that is coupled to one of the fastening tool portion and the magazine assembly is employed to guide the magazine assembly relative to the dispensing portion.
- 4. The fastening tool of claim 3, wherein the pin engages a hole formed in the other one of the fastening tool portion and the magazine assembly.
- 5. The fastening tool of claim 4, wherein the pin is oriented parallel to an axis about which the magazine assembly translates.
- 6. The fastening tool of claim 3, wherein the pin is oriented generally perpendicular to an axis about which the magazine assembly translates.
- 7. The fastening tool of claim 6, wherein the pin is movable between an engaged condition, which fixedly secures the fastening tool portion and the magazine assembly to one another in the first position, and a disengaged condition, which permits the magazine assembly to be moved between the first and second positions.
- 8. The fastening tool of claim 1, wherein the magazine assembly abuts the dispensing portion when the magazine assembly is positioned in the first position.
- 9. The fastening tool of claim 8, wherein the magazine assembly is spaced apart from the dispensing portion when the magazine assembly is positioned in the second position.
- 10. A fastening tool for holding a plurality of fasteners and selectively installing a first one of the fasteners into a workpiece, the fastening tool comprising:
a fastening tool portion having a dispensing portion for dispensing a first one of the fasteners, the dispensing portion including a lock-out aperture; and a magazine assembly for holding a portion of the fasteners, the magazine assembly being coupled to the fastening tool portion, the magazine assembly including a lock-out dog, the lock-out dog extending into the lock-out aperture and inhibiting the fastening tool portion from operating when the magazine assembly is positioned in a condition which permits the magazine assembly to feed the portion of the fasteners into the dispensing portion and a quantity of the fasteners in the magazine assembly is less than a predetermined quantity.
- 11. The fastening tool of claim 10, wherein the lock-out dog extends completely through the lock-out aperture when the quantity of the fasteners in the magazine assembly is less than the predetermined quantity.
- 12. The fastening tool of claim 11, wherein the fastening tool portion includes an actuating trigger and the lock-out dog mechanically prevents the actuating trigger from being cycled when the quantity of fasteners in the magazine assembly is less than the predetermined quantity.
- 13. The fastening tool of claim 12, wherein the fastening tool portion further comprises a movable contact trip, which is coupled to the dispensing portion, and a trigger lever, which interconnects the contact trip and the actuating trigger, and wherein the lock-out dog prevents at least one of the contact trip and the trigger lever from moving when the quantity of fasteners in the magazine assembly is less than the predetermined quantity.
- 14. The fastening tool of claim 10, wherein the lock-out dog is associated with a guide tab that supports the fasteners that are located in the magazine assembly.
- 15. The fastening tool of claim 14, wherein the lock-out dog and the guide tab are unitarily formed.
- 16. The fastening tool of claim 10, wherein the dispensing portion includes a nose structure through which the first one of the fasteners is dispensed.
- 17. The fastening tool of claim 16, wherein the magazine assembly abuts a magazine flange that is formed on the nose structure.
- 18. The fastening tool of claim 10, wherein the magazine assembly is coupled to the fastening tool portion but movable between a first position, wherein the magazine assembly is positioned to dispense the portion of fasteners into the dispensing portion, and a second position, wherein the magazine assembly is positioned so as to be incapable of dispensing the portion of the fasteners into the dispensing portion.
- 19. The fastening tool of claim 18, wherein the lock-out dog cannot extend into the lock-out aperture when the magazine assembly is positioned in the second position.
- 20. A fastening tool for holding a plurality of fasteners and selectively installing a first one of the fasteners into a workpiece, the fastening tool comprising:
a fastening tool portion; a magazine assembly; a guide post coupled to one of the fastening tool portion and the magazine assembly; and a guide port formed in the other one of the fastening tool portion and the magazine assembly, the guide port slidingly receiving the guide post.
