Claims
- 1. A magnetic alloy of the type used as one or more layers of a magnetic recording media, comprising:
- up to 20 atomic percent platinum;
- up to 10 atomic percent nickel;
- at least 75 atomic percent cobalt;
- a non-zero amount of tantalum up to 10 atomic percent; and
- a non-zero amount of titanium up to 10 atomic percent;
- the tantalum and titanium being in proportions to each other of between 3:1 and 1:3.
- 2. The magnetic alloy of claim 1, wherein the ratio of tantalum to titanium is 1:1, and further wherein the concentrations of tantalum and titanium are each between 1.5 and 3.0 atomic percent.
- 3. The magnetic alloy of claim 2, further comprising 2 atomic percent boron.
- 4. The magnetic alloy of claim 1, further comprising up to 10 atomic percent boron.
- 5. The magnetic alloy of claim 1, further comprising nitrogen in a concentration of up to 10 atomic percent.
- 6. The magnetic alloy of claim 1, further comprising oxygen in a concentration of up to 10 atomic percent.
- 7. The magnetic alloy of claim 1, further comprising up to 6 atomic % boron.
- 8. The alloy as described in claim 1 wherein said alloy provides higher coercivity and higher saturation magnetization as compared with a second alloy, said second alloy having equal corrosion resistance to said first alloy, said second alloy not having tantalum and titanium in said proportion of said first alloy.
- 9. The alloy as described in claim 1 wherein the concentration of tantalum and titanium are each between approximately 1.5 and 3.0 atomic percent.
- 10. A magnetic alloy for a magnetic recording medium, comprising:
- between 5 and 20 atomic percent chromium;
- a non-zero amount of tantalum up to 10 atomic percent;
- a non-zero amount of titanium up to 10 atomic percent;
- the ratio of tantalum to titanium being between in the range of 3:1 and 1:3; and
- the balance of said alloy being cobalt.
- 11. The magnetic alloy of claim 18, further comprising between 5 and 20 atomic percent platinum.
- 12. The magnetic alloy of claim 10, wherein the concentration of tantalum is between 1.5 and 3.0 atomic percent, the concentration of titanium is between 1.5 and 3.0 percent, the ratio of tantalum to titanium is 1:1, and said magnetic alloy further comprising boron in a concentration of 2.0 atomic percent.
- 13. The magnetic alloy of claim 10, further comprising nitrogen in a concentration of up to 10 atomic percent.
- 14. The alloy as described in claim 18 wherein said alloy provides higher coercivity and higher saturation magnetization as compared with a second alloy, said second alloy having equal corrosion resistance to said first alloy, said second alloy not having tantalum and titanium in said ratio range of said first alloy.
- 15. The alloy as described in claim 10 wherein the concentration of tantalum and titanium are each between approximately 1.5 and 3.0 atomic percent.
