FIG. 1

illustrates a portable computer with a conventional closure unit. The portable computer includes a main housing part

2

having rear and front ends

22

,

20

, and a display housing part

1

having a pivot end

12

connected pivotally to the rear end

22

of the main housing part

2

and a free end

10

opposite to the pivot end

12

. The display housing part

FIG. 5

illustrates the second preferred embodiment of the present invention, which is a modification the first preferred embodiment. Unlike the previous embodiment, the second magnet unit

5

′ includes two electromagnets

53

,

54

. Each of the electromagnets

53

,

54

includes a metal core

530

,

540

and a conductive wire

530

,

540

. The control unit

6

′ includes a control circuit connected to the second magnet unit

5

′ and operable so as to energize the second magnet unit

5

′. Referring to

FIGS. 5

,

6

and

7

, the control circuit includes a power source

63

, such as a battery or the power source applied to the portable computer

3

, and a power switch

64

interconnecting the power source

63

and the second magnet unit

5

′. The power switch

64

has an operating knob

641

that is adapted to be disposed outside the second housing part

32

and that is operable so as to enable operation of the control circuit from a de-energizing state, where the power source

63

is disconnected from the second magnet unit

5

′ to enable the second magnet unit

5

′ to attract with the first magnet unit

4

, to an energizing state, where the power source

63

is connected to the second magnet unit

5

′ to enable the electromagnets

53

,

54

to have the same magnetic polarity as that acting at end portions of the magnets

41

,

42

of the first magnet unit

4

so as to repel from the first magnet unit

4

. In other words, when the operating knob

641

6

′ is in the de-energizing state such that the first magnet unit

4

attracts with the metal cores

530

,

540

, thereby retaining the second housing part

32

in the closed position. When the operating knob

641

is pressed, the control unit

6

′ is in the energizing state such that the electromagnets

53

,

54

are S-polarized so as to enable the second magnet unit

5

′ to repel from the first magnet unit

4

, thereby facilitating movement of the second housing part

32

to the open position away from the first housing part

31

.

FIG. 8

illustrates the third preferred embodiment of the present invention, which is a modification of the first preferred embodiment. Unlike the first preferred embodiment, the first housing part

31

′ receives the main module, whereas the second housing part

32

′ receives the LCD module.

FIG. 9

illustrates the fourth preferred embodiment of the present invention, which is a modification the second preferred embodiment. Unlike the second preferred embodiment, the first housing part

31

′ receives the main module, whereas the second housing part

32

′ receives the LCD module.

It is noted that the first magnet unit

4

and the second magnet unit

5

,

5

′ can be designed to contact with each other. Friction that is generated therebetween can be reduced by means of proper surface treatment.

The following are some of the advantages of the present invention:

1. Because of magnetism, the first and second magnet units automatically attract with each other in the closed position and automatically repel from each other in the open position, therefore ensuring retention of the second housing part in the closed position and facilitating movement of the second housing part to the open position away from the first housing part.

2. Wearing of mechanical engagement parts commonly encountered in the prior art can be avoided since magnetism is in use.

While the present invention has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is understood that this invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments but is intended to cover various arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and equivalent arrangements.
