Claims
- 1. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- at least one disk for storage of information:
- a motor for rotating the at least one disk;
- a head assembly comprising at least one head for reading and writing information to the at least one disk;
- a head positioning actuator for positioning the head assembly with respect to the at least one disk;
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components in the disk drive apparatus such as the motor and head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board;
- rigid connection structures connecting the base and circuit board;
- an intermediate layer of damping materials disposed between the base and the circuit board, and between the rigid connection structures, the intermediate layer of damping material contacting both the base and circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of respective opposing faces of the base and circuit board so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus;
- a cover for covering and containing within its interior the at least one disk and the head assembly; and
- a gasket comprising a compressible material for compression between the base and the cover when the cover is installed, to reduce introduction of foreign particulate matter into the interior of the cover, to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus.
- 2. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board;
- rigid connection structures connecting the base and circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, and between the rigid connection structures, the intermediate layer of damping material contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, wherein the intermediate layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base and the circuit board, respectively.
- 3. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board;
- rigid connection structures connecting the base and circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, and between the rigid connection structures, the intermediate layer of damping material contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, wherein the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of their respective surface areas.
- 4. The assembly of claim 3, wherein:
- the intermediate layer is constrained tightly between the base and circuit board, and comprises a material which is adapted to absorb shock and vibration.
- 5. The assembly of claim 3, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least fifty percent of their respective surface areas.
- 6. The assembly of claim 5, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least seventy-five percent of their respective surface areas.
- 7. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- at least one disk for storage of information;
- a motor for rotating the at least one disk;
- a head assembly comprising at least one head for reading or writing information to the at least one disk;
- a head positioning actuator;
- a substantially rigid base for support mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as the motor and head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board;
- rigid connection structures connecting the base and circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, and between the rigid connection structures, the intermediate layer of damping material contacting both the base and circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of respective opposing faces of the base and circuit board so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus.
- 8. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- means for storing information;
- means for writing information to, or reading information from, said means for storing;
- base means for supporting the means for storing and the means for writing or reading;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry;
- rigid connection means connecting the base means and circuit board means; and
- damping means, disposed between the base means and the circuit board means, and between the rigid connection means, for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, wherein the damping means comprises an adhesive layer binding the circuit board means to the base means at a substantial fraction of opposing faces of the base means and the circuit board means, so as to damp structural resonances experienced by at least the base means.
- 9. The disk drive apparatus of claim 8, wherein the means for storing comprises at least one magnetic hard disk, the at least one magnetic hard disk operatively connected to a disk drive motor, the motor generating acoustic noise.
- 10. The disk drive apparatus of claim 8, wherein the means for writing or reading comprises a head assembly connected to a head positioning actuator, wherein the means for writing or reading generates acoustic noise.
- 11. The disk drive apparatus of claim 8, wherein the base means comprises substantially planar sheet metal, the base means capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 12. The disk drive apparatus of claim 8, wherein the damping means comprises a layer of material which absorbs shock and vibration, which layer is constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means.
- 13. The disk drive apparatus of claim 12, wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively.
- 14. The disk drive apparatus of claim 8, further comprising a cover means for containing in its interior the means for storing and the means for writing or reading so as to substantially prevent introduction of particulate matter into its interior, wherein the cover means is capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 15. The disk drive apparatus of claim 14, further comprising a gasket means, constrained between the base means and the cover means, for sealing a space between the cover means and the base means, reducing acoustic noise, and
- 16. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- base means for supporting mechanical components;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry;
- rigid connection means connecting the base means and circuit board means; and
- damping means, disposed between the base means and the circuit board means, and between the rigid connection means, for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, wherein the damping means comprises an adhesive layer binding the circuit board means to the base means at a substantial fraction of opposing faces of the base means and the circuit board means, so as to damp structural resonances experienced by at least the base means.
- 17. The assembly of claim 16, wherein the base means comprises substantially planar sheet metal, the base means capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 18. The assembly of claim 16, wherein the damping means comprises a layer of material which absorbs shock and vibration, which layer is constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means.
- 19. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively.
- 20. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- at least one disk for storage of information;
- a motor for rotating the at least one disk;
- a head assembly comprising at least one head for reading and writing information to the at least one disk;
- a head positioning actuator for positioning the head assembly with respect to the at least one disk;
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as the motor and head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board;
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of respective opposing faces of the base and circuit board, the damping material being deformable in response to bending of the base or circuit board so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping material dissipating the shear energy so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus;
- a cover for covering and containing within its interior the at least one disk and the head assembly; and
- a gasket comprising a compressible material for compression between the base and the cover when the cover is installed, to reduce introduction of foreign particulate matter into the interior of the cover, to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus.
- 21. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board, the damping material deformable in response to bending of the base or circuit board so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping material dissipating the shear energy so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, wherein the intermediate layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base and the circuit board, respectively.
- 22. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board, the damping material being deformable in response to bending of the base or circuit board so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping material dissipating the shear energy so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, wherein the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of the respective surface areas.
- 23. The assembly of claim 22, wherein:
- the intermediate layer is constrained tightly between the base and circuit board, and comprises a material which is adapted to absorb shock and vibration.
- 24. The assembly of claim 22, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least fifty percent of their respective surface areas.
- 25. The assembly of claim 24, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least seventy-five percent of their respective surface areas.
- 26. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- at least one disk for storage of information;
- a motor for rotating the at least one disk;
- a head assembly comprising at least one head for reading or writing information to the at least one disk;
- a head positioning actuator;
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as the motor and head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of respective opposing faces of the base and circuit board, the damping material being deformable in response to bending of the base or circuit board so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping material dissipating the shear energy so as to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus.
- 27. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- means for storing information;
- means for writing information to, or reading information from, said means for storing;
- base means for supporting the means for storing and the means for writing or reading;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry; and
- damping means, disposed between the base means and the circuit board means, the damping means being deformable in response to bending of the base means or circuit board means so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping means dissipating the shear energy damp mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, wherein the damping means comprises an adhesive layer binding the circuit board means to the base means at a substantial fraction of opposing faces of the base means and the circuit board means, so as to damp structural resonances experienced by at least the base means.
- 28. The disk drive apparatus of claim 27, wherein the means for storing comprises at least one magnetic hard disk, the at least one magnetic hard disk operatively connected to a disk drive motor, the motor generating acoustic noise.
- 29. The disk drive apparatus of claim 27, wherein the means for writing or reading comprises a head assembly connected to a head positioning actuator, wherein the means for writing or reading generates acoustic noise.
- 30. The disk drive apparatus of claim 27, wherein the base means comprises substantially planar sheet metal, the base means capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 31. The disk drive apparatus of claim 27, wherein the damping means comprises a layer of material which absorbs shock and vibration, which layer is constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means.
- 32. The disk drive apparatus of claim 31, wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively.
- 33. The disk drive apparatus of claim 27, further comprising a cover means for containing in its interior the means for storing and the means for writing or reading so as to substantially prevent introduction of particulate matter into its interior, wherein the cover means is capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 34. The disk drive apparatus of claim 33, further comprising a gasket means, constrained between the base means and the cover means, for sealing a space between the cover means and the base means, reducing acoustic noise, and damping structural resonances experienced by the cover means.
- 35. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- base means for supporting mechanical components;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry; and
- damping means, disposed between the base means and the circuit board means, the damping means being deformable in response to bending of the base means or circuit board means so as to convert energy of deformation into shear energy, the damping means dissipating the shear energy to damp mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, wherein the damping means comprises an adhesive layer binding the circuit board means to the base means at a substantial fraction of opposing faces of the base means and the circuit board means, so as to damp structural resonances experienced by at least the base means.
- 36. The assembly of claim 35, wherein the base means comprises substantially planar sheet metal, the base means capable of experiencing mechanical resonances.
- 37. The assembly of claim 35, wherein:
- the damping means comprises a layer of material which absorbs shock and vibration, which layer is constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means.
- 38. The assembly of claim 37, wherein
- the adhesive layer comprises an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively.
- 39. An assembly for a hard disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board, to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, the intermediate layer being constrained tightly between the base and circuit board, the intermediate layer comprising an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base and the circuit board, respectively.
- 40. An assembly for a hard disk drive apparatus for damping mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- a substantially rigid base for supporting mechanical components of the disk drive apparatus such as a motor or head positioning actuator, the base capable of experiencing mechanical resonances;
- a substantially rigid circuit board; and
- an intermediate layer of damping material disposed between the base and the circuit board, contacting both the base and circuit board at opposing faces of the base and circuit board, to damp structural resonances within the disk drive apparatus, the intermediate layer of damping material contacting the base and the circuit board on at least twenty-five percent of their respective surface areas.
- 41. The assembly of claim 40, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least fifty percent of their respective areas.
- 42. The assembly of claim 41, wherein:
- the intermediate layer of damping material contacts the base and the circuit board on at least seventy-five percent of their respective surface areas.
- 43. A disk drive apparatus, comprising:
- means for storing information;
- means for writing information to, or reading information from, said means for storing;
- base means for supporting the means for storing and the means for writing or reading;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry; and
- damping means, disposed between the base means and the circuit board means, to damp mechanical resonances in the disk drive apparatus, wherein the damping means is constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means, the damping means comprising an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively, to bind the circuit board means to the base means at a substantial fraction of opposing faces of the base means and the circuit board means.
- 44. An assembly for a disk drive apparatus, the assembly comprising:
- base means for supporting mechanical components;
- circuit board means for supporting electronic circuitry; and
- damping means, constrained tightly between the base means and the circuit board means, the damping means comprising an acrylic foam tape coated on both sides with adhesive layers for adhering to the base means and the circuit board means, respectively, so as to damp structural resonances experienced by at least the base means.
