Claims
- 1. A magnetic latch, comprising:
- a) a first member including magnetically attractable material; and
- b) a second member including:
- a first magnet to attract said first member, said first magnet defining a cavity;
- a solid non-magnetic member arranged inside of said cavity and covering substantially the inner surface defining said cavity,
- a second magnet to attract said first member; and
- an additional solid non-magnetic member arranged between said first magnet and said second magnet,
- c) a waterproof covering substantially encapsulating said second member, and
- d) said first and second members including means for preventing the lateral movement of the first member relative to the second member when said first and second members are latched together.
- 2. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, wherein at least one of said first and second magnets has a surface, facing said first member, which is partially covered with a solid, protective covering member and which is partially uncovered by said solid covering member.
- 3. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 2, wherein said uncovered portion includes a region of the outer periphery of said first magnet adjacent said additional solid non-magnetic member.
- 4. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, which is substantially completely covered with a solid, protective covering member.
- 5. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, wherein the polarity of said first magnet is reversed with respect to the polarity of said second magnet.
- 6. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 1, wherein said second member further includes:
- a third solid non-magnetic member arranged on an outer periphery of said second magnet to further enhance attraction between said first member and said second member.
- 7. A magnetic latch comprising:
- a first member including magnetically attractable material,
- a second member including:
- a plurality of substantially concentrically positioned magnets including an innermost magnet having a cavity and an outermost magnet, and
- a plurality of solid non-magnetic members concentrically arranged and interposed between said plurality of magnets, including an innermost member positioned within said cavity of said innermost magnet,
- said first and second members including means for preventing the lateral movement of the first member relative to the second member when said first and second members are latched together.
- 8. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 7, further comprising a backing plate secured to said plurality of magnets and said plurality of nonmagnetic members and covering at least said innermost magnet and said cavity.
- 9. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 7, wherein the polarity of said plurality of magnets alternates for each magnet from said innermost magnet to said outermost magnet.
- 10. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 7, wherein the polarity of said plurality of magnets does not change for each magnet from said innermost magnet to said outermost magnet.
- 11. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 10, wherein one of said plurality of non-magnetic members forms an outer portion of said second member.
- 12. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 7 8, 9, or 10, further comprising a rim connected to said backing plate.
