Claims
- 1. A magnetic latch, comprising:
- a first member including magnetically attractable material; and
- a second member including:
- a first magnet to attract said first member, said first magnet defining a cavity; and
- a solid non-magnetic, non-elastic member arranged inside of said cavity, positioned proximate to the inner surface of said first magnet and acting as a means for enhancing the magnetic attraction between said first and second members;
- said first and second members including means for preventing the lateral movement of the first member relative to the second member when said first and second members are latched together.
- 2. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a backing plate secured to a back surface of said first magnet, said back surface opposite a magnet surface adjacent said first member, said backing plate extending over at least a portion of said back surface of said first magnet and extending over a region of said first magnet including said cavity.
- 3. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 2, further comprising a fastener attached to said backing plate for securing said second member to an object.
- 4. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 2, wherein said backing plate extends over substantially the entire back surface of said first magnet.
- 5. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 4, wherein said backing plate comprises ferromagnetic material.
- 6. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 2, wherein said backing plate comprises ferromagnetic material.
- 7. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said second member further comprises:
- an additional solid non-magnetic member arranged on an outer periphery of said first magnet.
- 8. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 7, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, including a portion partially covered with a solid, protective covering member and a portion which is partially uncovered by said solid, protective covering member.
- 9. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 8, wherein said uncovered portion includes a region of the outer periphery of said first magnet adjacent said additional solid non-magnetic member.
- 10. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 7, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, which is substantially completely covered with a solid, protective covering member.
- 11. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said means for preventing lateral movement comprises a protrusion formed on said first member and extending into the cavity of said first magnet.
- 12. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 11, wherein said protrusion is formed at least partially from ferromagnetic material.
- 13. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 11, wherein said solid non-magnetic member is in the shape of one of an open-ended cylinder or an open-ended polygon.
- 14. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 11, wherein said center section has an upper surface and said non-magnetic member has an upper surface which extends through a portion of the longitudinal length of said cavity so as to be co-extensive with the upper surface of said center section.
- 15. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said second member further comprises:
- a center section arranged inside of said cavity such that said solid non-magnetic member is located between said first magnet and said center section.
- 16. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim wherein said center section is formed at least partially from ferromagnetic material.
- 17. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 15, wherein said center section is a magnet integrally formed with said first magnet.
- 18. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 15, wherein said means for preventing lateral movement comprises an extension of said center section protruding from within said cavity and passing through an aperture in said first member.
- 19. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 18, wherein said means for preventing lateral movement further includes an extension of said solid non-magnetic member protruding from within said cavity and passing through said aperture in said first member.
- 20. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 15, wherein said backing plate covers a surface of said center section substantially coplanar with said first magnet back surface.
- 21. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 20, wherein said first magnet has a top surface facing said first member and an exterior surface between said top and back surfaces, wherein said second member further includes:
- a rim extending over the exterior surface of said first magnet and connected to said backing plate.
- 22. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 20, wherein said magnet has an upper surface and said non-magnetic member extends throughout the entire longitudinal length of said cavity and is coextensive with the upper surface of said magnet.
- 23. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said means for preventing lateral movement comprises a ring member extending around a circumference of said first member to form a lip.
- 24. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, which is partially covered with a solid, magnetically insulating protective covering member and which is partially uncovered by said solid protective covering member.
- 25. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 24, wherein said uncovered portion includes a region of the outer periphery of said first magnet adjacent said additional solid non-magnetic member.
- 26. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, which is substantially completely covered with a solid, magnetically insulating protective covering member.
- 27. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said cavity is a through-hole.
- 28. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said first magnet is donut-shaped, and said cavity is a through-hole.
- 29. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5 further including a water impervious film encapsulating substantially the entire external surface of at least one of said first and second members.
- 30. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said second member further includes:
- a second magnet to attract said first member; and
- an additional solid non-magnetic member arranged between said first magnet and said second magnet.
- 31. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 30, wherein at least one of said first and second magnets has a surface, facing said first member, which is partially covered with a solid, protective covering member and which is partially uncovered by said solid covering member.
- 32. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 31, wherein said uncovered portion includes a region of the outer periphery of said first magnet adjacent said additional solid non-magnetic member.
- 33. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 30, wherein said first magnet has a surface, facing said first member, which is substantially completely covered with a solid, protective covering member.
- 34. A magnetic latch as set forth in claim 30, wherein the polarity of said first magnet is reversed with respect to the polarity of said second magnet.
- 35. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 30, wherein said second member further includes:
- a third solid non-magnetic member arranged on an outer periphery of said second magnet to further enhance attraction between said first member and said second member.
- 36. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 1, 2, 4, 6 or 5, wherein said first magnet cavity is positioned within a central region of said first magnet.
- 37. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 2, 4 or 6, wherein said cavity is in the form of a through-hole and said backing plate completely covers said through-hole.
- 38. A magnetic latch as recited in claim 2, 4 or 6, further comprising a rim, connected to said backing plate.
