- 2. The magnetic recording and reproducing device of claim 1 wherein said computing means operates to set said first digital control signal to produce an optimum recording bias value by performing a coarse adjustment procedure followed by a fine adjustment procedure, said coarse adjustment procedure including the steps of generating said reference signal at a first standard level and generating a value of said first digital control signal corresponding to said standard level of said reference signal, and said fine adjustment procedure including the steps of sequentially varying said first digital control signal between minimum and maximum values, storing outputs of said comparator for each sequential value of said first digital control signal, detecting among stored outputs of said comparator means the number of said values of said output of said comparator means having a maximum value reproducing level, and determining a value of said first digital control signal corresponding to a minimum value of recording bias corresponding to said output values of said comparator means having at least said maximum value reproducing level.
- 3. The magnetic recording and reproducing device of claim 2 wherein said computing means outputs an error signal if said number of said output values from said comparing means having said maximum value reproducing level is less than three.
- 4. The magnetic recording and reproducing device of claim 2 wherein, in sequentially varying said first digital control signal, a holding time of each value of said digital control signal corresponds to a transit time of said magnetic recording medium between said recording means and said reproducing means.
- 5. The magnetic recording and reproducing device of claim 1 wherein said computing means sets said second digital control signal at a value to produce the optimum recording level in accordance with a procedure including the steps of setting said switch means to select said recording level adjusting signal, setting a coarse value of said recording level setting signal by setting said reference signal at a second standard level and said second digital signal at a value corresponding to said second standard level of said reference signal, sampling said output of said comparing means at predetermined time intervals, counting the number of times among said predetermined time intervals said output of said comparing means is at a high reproducing level, employing a then-present value of said second digital control signal if a counted number of times is within a predetermined range, and varying said second digital control signal if said number of times is not within said predetermined range and repeating said step of sampling.
