Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording disk having an outer surface with a noiminal surface plane for storing magnetically-readable data, said disk comprising:
- a layer of substantially rigid substrate material having a substantially planar substrate surface; and
- a magnetizable film layer deposited over said substrate surface having a substantially uniform thickness and a substantially planar recording surface;
- said outer surface including a plurality of spaced-apart circular bumps each having a largest diametral dimension D.sub.r about a center thereof, said each bump comprising a depression extending toward said substrate surface to a depth d.sub.p below said nominal surface plane, a central protrusion centered in each said depression extending to a height h.sub.p above the nominal surface plane and a peripheral elevation substantially surrounding said each central depression and extending to a height h.sub.r above said nominal surface plane;
- said plurality of spaced-apart bumps having their centers separated from one another by a minimum separation distance D.sub.s ;
- said depression depth d.sub.p being in the interval from 1 to 250 nanometers, said peripheral elevation height h.sub.r being greater than one nanometer and less than said height h.sub.p of the central protrusion and said largest diametral dimension D.sub.r being in the interval from 1 to 125 micrometers; and
- the height h.sub.p of each central protrusion being greater than the height h.sub.r of each respective peripheral elevation.
- 2. A Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) for reading and storing data, said DASD comprising:
- a magnetic recording disk having a substrate with a substrate surface and a magnetizable film layer on the substrate surface, the film layer having a nominal surface plane for storing magnetically-readable data;
- a magnetic head and means for supporting said head in a selected orientation for generally radial controlled movement relative to said disk;
- said outer substrate surface including an annular data region and an adjacent annular second region including a plurality of spaced-apart bumps each having a largest diametral dimension D.sub.r about a center thereof, said each bump including a depression extending toward said substrate surface to a depth d.sub.p below said nominal surface plane, a central protrusion in each said depression extending to a height h.sub.p above said nominal surface plane, and a peripheral elevation substantially surrounding said each depression and extending to a height h.sub.r above said nominal surface plane;
- said plurality of spaced-apart bumps having their centers separated from one another by a minimum separation distance D.sub.s ; and
- the height h.sub.p of each central protrusion being greater than the height h.sub.r of each respective peripheral elevation.
- 3. The DASD of claim 2 wherein, for said each bump, said largest diametral dimension D.sub.r is in the interval from 1 to 125 micrometers, said central protrusion height h.sub.p is in the interval from 1 to 100 nanometers and said minimum separation distance D.sub.s .gtoreq.2D.sub.r and is less than 500 micrometers.
- 4. The DASD of claim 2 wherein said magnetic recording disk further comprises:
- a protective film deposited over said magnetizable film layer to form a layer having a substantially uniform thickness and a substantially planar protective surface.
- 5. A magnetic recording medium comprising:
- a disk which has a substrate layer with a substrate surface, the substrate surface having a nominal surface plane;
- said disk having a plurality of asperities on the substrate surface;
- each asperity comprising a central protrusion, an annulus-shaped depression circumscribing the central protrusion and a circular rim circumscribing the annulus-shaped depression;
- the central protrusions having a substantially common height h.sub.p above the nominal surface plane, each central protrusion having a center with respect to the nominal surface plane;
- the common height h.sub.p being the highest elevation of the substrate layer above the nominal surface plane;
- each central protrusion being non-annular and uniformly shaped;
- the centers of the central protrusions being substantially uniformly spaced at a distance D.sub.s from one another;
- each annulus-shaped depression having a depth d.sub.p below said nominal surface plane and each respective circular rim having a height h.sub.r above the nominal surface plane; and
- each central protrusion having a height h.sub.p which is greater than the height h.sub.r of each respective circular rim.
- 6. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 5 comprising:
- the distance D.sub.s between the centers of the central protrusions being greater than a diameter D.sub.r of the circular rim.
- 7. A disk drive including the magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 6, the drive comprising:
- a rotatable support for supporting the disk for rotation;
- a suspension supporting a magnetic head;
- disk rotating means connected to said rotatable support for rotating the disk past the magnetic head in a transducing relationship therewith;
- positioning means connected to the suspension for moving the magnetic head to multiple positions with respect to the disk so as to process signals with respect to multiple tracks on the disk as the disk rotates; and
- control means connected to the magnetic head, the disk rotating means and the positioning means tor controlling and processing signals with respect to the magnetic head, for controlling rotation of the disk and for controlling the position of the magnetic head.
- 8. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 6 comprising:
- the substrate layer having been textured with a laser to provide said central protrusions;
- the substrate layer being NiP; and
- a magnetic layer covering the substrate layer which replicates said asperities,
- whereby a slider will engage only central protrusions replicated by the magnetic layer upon contact start and stop.
- 9. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 8 comprising:
- the central protrusions being located only in an annular band on the substrate surface of said disk.
- 10. A magnetic recording mediun as claimed in claim 8 comprising:
- the central protrusions being located over the entire substrate surface of the disk.
- 11. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 8 comprising:
- the distance D.sub.s between the centers of the central protrusions being equal to or greater than twice the diameter D.sub.r of the circular rim.
- 12. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 11 comprising:
- the common height h.sub.p being in the range 1-100 nm.
- 13. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 12 comprising:
- the common height h.sub.p being substantially 25 nm.
- 14. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 12 comprising:
- the distance D.sub.s between the centers of the central protrusions being at least about 50 .mu.m but less than 500 .mu.m.
- 15. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 14 comprising:
- the diameter D.sub.r of the circular rim being in the range of 1-125 .mu.m.
- 16. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 15 comprising:
- each central protrusion having substantially circular cross sections which are parallel to said nominal surface plane; and
- each central protrusion having a rounded top.
- 17. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 16 comprising:
- the distance D.sub.x between the centers of the central protrusions being in the range of about 50-200 .mu.m.
- 18. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 17 comprising:
- the height h.sub.r of the circular rim being greater than 1 nm.
- 19. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 18 comprising:
- the depth d.sub.p of the annular depression being in the range of 1-250 nm.
- 20. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 19 comprising:
- the diameter D.sub.r of the circular rim being less than 100 .mu.m.
- 21. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 20 comprising:
- the common height h.sub.p being substantially 25 nm.
- 22. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 21 comprising:
- each central protrusion having a largest circular cross section which has a diameter substantially equal to 7 .mu.m;
- the distance D.sub.s between the centers of the central protrusions being substantially 50 .mu.m; and
- the diameter D.sub.r of the circular rim being substantially 15 .mu.m.
- 23. A magnetic recording medium comprising:
- a disk which has a substrate layer with a substrate surface, the substrate surface having a nominal surface plane;
- said disk having a plurality of asperities on the substrate surface;
- each asperity comprising a dome-shaped protrusion so as to provide the substrate surface of the disk with a plurality of dome-shaped protrusions;
- said dome-shaped protrusions having a substantially common height h.sub.p above the nominal surface plane, each dome-shaped protrusion having a center with respect to said nominal surfice plane;
- the common height h.sub.p being the highest elevation of the stibstrate layer above the nominal surface plane;
- each dome-shaped protrusion being non-annular and uniformly shaped;
- the centers of the dome-shaped protrusions being substantially uniformly spaced at a distance D.sub.s from one another; and
- each dome-shaped protrusion being centrally located in and projecting from a substantially annulus-shaped depression in said substrate surface wherein the annulus-shaped depression has a depth d.sub.p below said nominal surface plane and each annulus-shaped depression being circumscribed by a substantially circular rim which has a height which is located between a bottom of the annulus-shaped depression and a top of the dome-shaped protrusion.
- 24. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 23 comprising:
- the substrate layer being NiP.
- 25. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 24 comprising:
- the substrate layer having been textured with a laser to provide said dome-shaped protrusions; and
- a magnetic layer covering the substrate layer which replicates said asperities,
- whereby a slider will engage only dome-shaped protrusions replicated by the magnetic layer upon contact start and stop.
- 26. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 25 comprising:
- the common height h.sub.p being in the range 1-100 nm;
- the depth d.sub.p of the annulus-shaped depression being in the range of 1-250 nm;
- the circular rim having a diameter D.sub.r in the range of 1-125 .mu.m; and
- the distance D.sub.s between the centers of the dome-shaped protrusions being at least about 50 .mu.m but less than 500 .mu.m.
- 27. A disk drive including the magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 26, the drive comprising:
- a rotatable support for supporting the disk for rotation;
- a suspension supporting a magnetic head;
- disk rotating means connected to said rotatable support for rotating the disk past the magnetic head in a transducing relationship therewith;
- positioning means connected to the suspension for moving the magnetic head to multiple positions with respect to the disk so as to process signals with respect to multiple tracks on the disk as the disk rotates; and
- control means connected to the magnetic head, the disk rotating means and the positioning means for controlling and processing signals with respect to the magnetic head, for controlling rotation of the disk and for controlling the position of the magnetic head.
- 28. A magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 26 comprising:
- each circular rim having a height h.sub.r above the nominal surface plane.
