Claims
- 1. A dispersion for use in magnetic recording media comprising:
- (a) a copolymer comprising:
- (i) a polyurethane backbone;
- (ii) at least one SO.sub.3 M group pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has an SO.sub.3 M equivalent weight of from about 5,000 to about 30,000 and wherein M is selected from the group consisting of H+, NR.sub.4.sup.+ wherein R can be H.sup.+ or an alkyl group, Li.sup.+, Na.sup.+, K.sup.+ and mixtures thereof;
- (iii) at least two crosslinkable hydroxy groups pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has a hydroxy equivalent weight of from about 1000 to about 5,000; and
- (iv) at least one vinyl polymeric segment pendant from the polyurethane backbone; and
- (b) a magnetizable pigment dispersed in said polymer.
- 2. A composite for magnetic recording comprising:
- (a) a substrate having a front side and a back side;
- (b) a cured dispersion coating on at least one side comprising a cured copolymer, the copolymer comprising:
- (i) a polyurethane backbone;
- (ii) at least one SO.sub.3 M group pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has an SO.sub.3 M equivalent weight of from about 5,000 to about 30,000 and wherein M is selected from the group consisting of H.sup.+, NR.sub.4.sup.+ wherein R can be H.sup.+ or an alkyl group, Li.sup.+, Na.sup.+, K.sup.+, and mixtures thereof;
- (iii) at least two crosslinkable hydroxy groups pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has a hydroxy equivalent weight of from about 1000 to about 5,000; and
- (iv) at least one vinyl polymeric segment pendant from the polyurethane backbone; and
- (c) a magnetizable pigment and optionally a nonmagnetizable pigment dispersed in said cured dispersion on at least one side.
- 3. A dispersion for use in magnetic recording media comprising:
- (a) a graft copolymer comprising;
- (i) a polyurethane backbone;
- (ii) at least three crosslinkable hydroxy groups pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has a hydroxy equivalent weight of from about 500 to about 50,000; and
- (iii) at least one vinyl polymeric segment comprising polymerized polymerizable monomer pendant from the polyurethane backbone;
- (b) a dispersing agent; and
- (c) a magnetizable pigment dispersed in said copolymer.
- 4. A composite for magnetic recording comprising:
- (a) a substrate having a front side and a back side;
- (b) a cured dispersion coating on at least one side comprising a graft copolymer comprising;
- (i) a polurethane backbone;
- (ii) at least three crosslinkable hydroxy groups pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has a hydroxy equivalent weight of from about 500 to about 50,000; and
- (iii) at least one vinyl polymeric segment comprising polymerized polymerizable monomer pendant from the polyurethane backbone; a dispersing agent; a magnetizable pigment dispersed in said cured dispersion on at least one side.
- 5. A dispersion for use in magnetic recording media comprising:
- (a) a block copolymer comprising:
- (i) a polyurethane backbone;
- (ii) at least three crosslinkable hydroxy groups pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein the polyurethane backbone has a hydroxy equivalent weight of from about 500 to about 50,000; and
- (iii) at least one vinyl polymeric macromonomer segment pendant from the polyurethane backbone, wherein said vinyl polymeric macromonomer segment comrises residues of a macromonomer diol copolymerized into the polyurethane backbone, and further wherein the molecular weight of said segment is from about 1000 to about 20,000; and
- (b) a magnetizable pigment dispersed in said block copolymer.
- 6. A composite for magnetic recording comprising:
- (a) a substrate having a front side and a back side;
- (b) a cured dispersion coating on at least one side comprising the cured block copolymer of claim 5; and
- (c) a magnetizable pigment dispersed in said cured dispersion on at least one side.
