Claims
- 1. A thin-film magnetic recording disc for use with a read/write head in a disc drive, comprising:
a substrate; a magnetic recording film disposed over the substrate; a protective overcoat on the recording film; and an outer layer comprising a solid fluorocarbon and a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oil.
- 2. The recording disc of claim 1 wherein the protective overcoat includes carbon.
- 3. The recording disc of claim 2 wherein the fluorocarbon has a thickness in the range of about 10-40 angstroms.
- 4. The recording disc of claim 2 wherein the ratio of fluorine to carbon in the fluorocarbon is in the range of about 8-30 percent.
- 5. The recording disc of claim 2 wherein the solid fluorocarbon is formed by a sputtering process.
- 6. A method of fabricating a thin-film magnetic recording disc, the method comprising:
forming a magnetic recording film over a substrate; providing a protective overcoat on the recording film; and providing an outer layer for the recording disc wherein the outer layer comprises a solid fluorocarbon and a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oil.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the forming a protective overcoat includes sputtering a carbon material.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein providing an outer layer includes forming a fluorocarbon layer having a thickness in the range of about 10-40 angstroms.
- 9. The method of claim 7 wherein providing an outer layer includes forming a fluorocarbon layer in which the ratio of fluorine to carbon is in the range of about 8-30 percent.
- 10. The method of claim 7 wherein providing an outer layer includes performing a sputtering process to form the fluorocarbon.
- 11. A magnetic recording apparatus comprising:
a read/write head for transmitting and receiving information to and from a magnetic recording medium; and a magnetic recording medium having an outer layer comprising a solid fluorocarbon and a perfluoropolyether (PFPE) oil.
- 12. The magnetic recording apparatus of claim 11 wherein the outer layer is disposed over a carbon layer.
- 13. A magnetic recording apparatus comprising:
a read/write head; and a magnetic storage medium including means for reducing wear of the magnetic storage medium when information is transmitted to or read from the magnetic storage medium by the read/write head.
