Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording medium, comprising:
- a support;
- a lower layer comprising an inorganic powder dispersed in a binder over the support; and
- an upper magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder coated over the lower layer, and having a coating orientation direction, wherein the upper magnetic layer comprises a ferromagnetic alloy powder having a major axis length of 0.25 .mu.m or less and an acicular ratio of 12 or less and said upper magnetic layer has a dry thickness of 1.0 .mu.m or less, a coercive force (Hc) in the longitudinal direction parallel with the in-plane direction and with the coating orientation direction of 1,500 Oe or more and a coercive force (Hc) in the width direction perpendicular to the coating orientation direction of 1000 Oe or more, and the inorganic powder contained in said lower layer has a true specific gravity of not less than 3.
- 2. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inorganic powder contained in said lower nonmagnetic layer is a granular particle having an average particle size of 0.2 .mu.m or less or an acicular particle having a major axis length of from 0.05 to 1.0 .mu.m and an acicular ratio of 20 or less.
- 3. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic alloy powder comprises an Fe-Co alloy or Co metal as a main component.
- 4. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic powder comprises 75% or more of said ferromagnetic alloy and contains at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, S, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Cu, Y, Mo, Rh, Pd, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, Ba, Ta, W, Re, Au, Hg, Pb, Bi, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, P, Mn, Zn, Ni, Sr and B.
- 5. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said upper magnetic layer contains an abrasive having a particle size of from 0.01 to 2 .mu.m.
- 6. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein the inorganic powder contained in said lower nonmagnetic layer contains at least one member selected from the group consisting of TiO.sub.2 (rutile or anatase), TiO.sub.x, cerium oxide, tin oxide, tungsten oxide, ZnO, ZrO.sub.2, Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, .alpha.-alumina having an .alpha.-conversion of 90% or more, .beta.-alumina, .gamma.-alumina, .alpha.-iron oxide, goethite, corundum, silicon nitride, titanium carbide, magnesium oxide, molybdenum disulfide, copper oxide, BaCO.sub.3, SrCO.sub.3, BaSO.sub.4, silicon carbide and titanium carbide.
- 7. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said support is formed from at least one flexible support material selected from the group consisting of polyesters selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate, polyolefins, cellulose triacetate, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyimide, polyamide-imide, polysulfone, aramide and aromatic polyamide.
- 8. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer contains a magnetic powder which imparts a thixotropic property to the layer material.
- 9. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer has a maximum magnetic flux density (Bm) of 500 gauss or less.
- 10. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer contains a magnetic powder which has substantially no magnetic recording property.
- 11. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said lower layer is a non-magnetic layer.
