Claims
- 1. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, and wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 2. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, and wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 3. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, and wherein Vicker's hardness of said protective film is 2000 kg/mm2 or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 4. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, and wherein Vicker's hardness of said protective film is 2000 kg/mm2 or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 5. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, and wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 6. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to Sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, and wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 7. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein said protective film has a thickness of 500 Å or less, and wherein Vicker's hardness of said protective film is 2000 kg/mm2 or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 8. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein said protective film has a thickness of 200 Å or less, and wherein said protective film has Vicker's hardness of 2000 kg/mm2 or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 9. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, wherein a center line average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, and wherein said protective film has Vicker's hardness of 2000 kg/mm or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 10. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, wherein a center line average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, and wherein said protective film has Vicker's hardness of 2000 kg/mm2 or more, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 11. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital, hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, and wherein a center line average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 12. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital, hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, and wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 13. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, and wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 14. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising diamond-like carbon containing hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic% and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, and wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 15. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 500 Å or less, and wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 16. A method of writing data to or reading data from a magnetic medium comprising:a substrate, a magnetic layer formed over said substrate, and a protective film comprising hydrogen at a concentration of 10-60 atomic%, carbon having carbon bonds attributed to sp3 hybrid orbital and at least one element selected from the group consisting of group III and group V elements, wherein a centerline average roughness of said protective film is 30 nm or less, wherein a thickness of said protective film is 200 Å or less, and wherein a friction coefficient of a surface of said protective film is 0.4 or less, said method comprising the steps of: providing said magnetic medium in a system for writing data to or reading data from said magnetic medium; contacting said magnetic medium with a magnetic head; and operating said system to write data to or read data from said magnetic medium using said magnetic head.
- 17. A method according to any one of claims to 1 to 16, wherein said protective film contains 15 to 40 atomic% of hydrogen.
- 18. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein said protective film contains an element selected from the group consisting of silicon, germanium, tin and lead.
- 19. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 16 wherein said magnetic medium is selected from the group consisting of an audio tape, a video tape, floppy disk and a hard disk.
