Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording medium, comprising:
- a support;
- at least one lower layer disposed over the support, the lower layer formed from a coating solution comprising a non-magnetic inorganic powder dispersed in a binder;
- at least one upper magnetic layer formed over the lower layer from a coating solution comprising a ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder, said upper magnetic layer having a thickness (d) of 1.0 .mu.m or less and said ferromagnetic powder in the upper magnetic layer having a crystallite size of from 100 to 450 .ANG. and said upper magnetic layer having a coercive force (Hc) of from 1,200 to 3,000 Oe and a maximum magnetic flux density (Bm) of from 2,100 to 4,500 gauss.
- 2. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said flexible support has a center line average surface roughness of 0.03 .mu.m or less.
- 3. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer is formed by wet coating the non-magnetic coating solution comprising the powder dispersed in the binder for the lower layer on the support and said upper magnetic layer is formed simultaneously or successively by coating the upper layer magnetic coating solution comprising the ferromagnetic powder dispersed in the binder on the lower non-magnetic layer, while the lower non-magnetic layer is wet.
- 4. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said non-magnetic coating solution comprising the powder dispersed in the binder for said lower non-magnetic layer has a thixotropic property.
- 5. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic powder for said upper magnetic layer is a ferromagnetic alloy powder comprising as a main component at least one of Fe, Ni and Co and an optional other component selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, S, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Cu, Y, Mo, Rh, Pd, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, Ba, Ta, W, Re, Au, Pb, Bi, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, P, Co, Mn, Zn, Ni, Sr and B.
- 6. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer contains an inorganic powder having a Mohs hardness of 4 or more.
- 7. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said powder for the lower non-magnetic layer is at least one inorganic powder selected from the group consisting of .alpha.-alumina having an alpha-conversion of 90% or more, .beta.-alumina, .gamma.-alumina, silicon carbide, chromium oxide, cerium oxide, .alpha.-iron oxide, corundum, silicon nitride, titanium carbide, titanium oxide, silicon dioxide, tungsten oxide, zirconium oxide, boron nitride, zinc oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate and molybdenum disulfide.
- 8. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said lower layer contains a magnetic powder.
- 9. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said powder for the lower non-magnetic layer contains a magnetic powder and said non-magnetic layer has a maximum magnetic flux density (Bm) of 500 gauss or less.
- 10. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said flexible support has a modulus of elasticity of from 100 to 2,000 kg/mm.sup.2.
- 11. The magnetic recording medium as claimed in claim 1, wherein said support is formed of at least one flexible support material selected from the group consisting of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene naphthalate, polyolefins, cellulose triacetate, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyimide, polyamide-imide, polysulfone, aramide and aromatic polyamide.
- 12. A magnetic recording medium according to claim 1, wherein said upper magnetic layer has a thickness of from 0.05 to 0.31 .mu.m.
- 13. A magnetic recording medium according to claim 1, wherein an average thickness variation (.DELTA.d) at the interface between said upper magnetic layer and lower layer is not more than d/2.
