Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording medium comprising a flexible support having provided thereon a lower layer comprising a binder and a non-magnetic powder dispersed therein and an upper magnetic layer over the lower layer, the upper magnetic layer comprising a binder and a ferromagnetic powder dispersed therein, wherein said upper magnetic layer has a dry thickness of not more than 1.0 .mu.m, and said magnetic recording medium has an in-plane dimension parallel to the surface of the upper magnetic laver and a thickness dimension perpendicular to the in-plane dimension and a magnetic property such that when a magnetic field of 10 kOe is applied to said upper magnetic layer in a direction parallel with the plane of the upper magmetic layer with a vibrating sample magnetometer and the magnetic recording medium is turned by 90.degree. with respect to its thickness dimension and then an outer magnetic field is applied in the direction perpendicular to the surface of upper magnetic layer, the outer magnetic field (Hr) which is necessary to bring a residual magnetization of the magnetic recording medium to zero is not less than 1500 Oe.
- 2. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic powder is an acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder having a major axis length of not more than 0.3 .mu.m and a coercive force (Hc) of not less than 1500 Oe, or a tabular ferromagnetic powder having a plate diameter of not more than 0.3 .mu.m and an Hc of not less than 1000 Oe.
- 3. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said upper magnetic layer contains a ferromagnetic alloy powder having a major axis length of not more than 0.25 .mu.m and an acicular ratio of not more than 12, and said upper magnetic layer has a coercive force of not less than 1500 Oe in the longitudinal direction and not less than 1000 Oe in the width direction.
- 4. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic powder is an acicular ferromagnetic alloy powder containing Fe, Ni or Co.
- 5. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said ferromagnetic powder is a ferromagnetic alloy powder comprising Fe, Ni or Co as a main component and further containing at least one atom selected from the group consisting of Al, Si, S, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Cu, Y, Mo, Rh, Pd, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, Ba, Ta, W, Re, Au, Pb, Bi, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, P, Co, Mn, Zn, Ni, Sr and B.
- 6. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said non-magnetic powder is an inorganic powder which is spherical or tabular.
- 7. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer contains a magnetic powder imparting thixotropy to a coating composition for said non-magnetic layer.
- 8. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer has a maximum magnetic flux density (Bm) of not more than 500 gauss.
- 9. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said lower non-magnetic layer contains a magnetic powder but does not contribute to magnetic recording.
- 10. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said non-magnetic powder contains an inorganic powder having a Mohs hardness of 3 or higher.
- 11. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said non-magnetic powder contains at least one inorganic powder selected from the group consisting of TiO.sub.2 including rutile and anatase, TiO.sub.x, (x=1 to 2), cerium oxide, tin oxide, tungsten oxide, ZnO, ZrO.sub.2, SiO.sub.2, Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3, .alpha.-alumina having an a ratio of 90% or more, .beta.-alumina, .epsilon.-alumina, .alpha.-iron oxide, geothite, corundum, silicon nitride, titanium carbide, magnesium oxide, boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, copper oxide, MgCO.sub.3, CaCO.sub.3, BaCO.sub.3, SrCO.sub.3, BaSO.sub.4, silicon carbide and titanium carbide.
- 12. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said support has a modulus of elasticity of from 100 to 2000 kg/mm.sup.2.
- 13. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said support is a film of polymer selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyolefins, cellulose triacetate, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyimide, polyamideimide, polysulfone, aramide, and aromatic polyamide.
- 14. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said upper magnetic layer is coated on said lower non-magnetic layer while the lower non-magnetic layer is in a wet state.
- 15. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, which is a digital audio or video tape, or a digital recording disc.
- 16. A magnetic recording medium as in claim 1, wherein said lower layer is a non-magnetic layer.
