Claims
- 1. A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus comprising:
- a write head recording a signal on a magnetic recording medium;
- a recording amplifier, connected at a recording amplifier output to said write head, and supplying a recording current corresponding to the signal to said write head;
- a read head reproducing the signal recorded on the magnetic recording medium;
- a reproducing amplifier, connected to said read head and generating an amplified signal corresponding to the signal reproduced by said read head;
- a variable equalizer, connected to said reproducing amplifier, and equalizing a waveform of the signal reproduced by said read head so as to adjust said waveform to provide an output based upon control equalization characteristics supplied to a control characteristic setting input of said variable equalizer;
- an equalization error detector, connected to receive the Output of said variable equalizer, and detecting an equalization error signal indicating waveform distortion of the signal reproduced by said read head including a distortion component caused by wear of the write head, and providing said equalization error signal at an equalization error detector output;
- a selectable control path, connected to receive the equalization error detector signal at the equalization error detector output, and selectively enabled to provide a modified version of the equalization error detector signal as the control equalization characteristics supplied to the control characteristic setting input;
- a selectable source of reference equalization characteristics selectively enabled to supply fixed reference equalization characteristics as the control equalization characteristics to the setting input, said fixed reference equalization characteristics representing an initial waveform characteristic imparted to signals applied to a write head free from any wear;
- a mode controller providing control signals to enable the selectable control path while disabling the selectable source of reference equalization characteristics under normal operation and providing control signals to disable the selectable control path and enable the selectable source of reference equalization characteristics to adjust recording current to an optimum level in a recording current adjusting mode; and
- a recording current adjusting circuit, connected to a control input of said recording amplifier and selectively connected to said equalization error detector output, and supplying a current gain adjusting control signal to said control input of said recording amplifier on the basis of the equalization error signal supplied from said equalization error detector output under control of the mode controller so as to thereby adjust a value of the recording current when the mode controller enables the selectable source of reference equalization characteristics.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, said selectable control path further comprising:
- a switching element connected to said equalization error detector output;
- a gain controller fixing the amount of modification to be applied to adjust the equalization characteristics of the variable equalizer; and
- wherein the selectable control path is enabled or not by the mode controller controlling the switching element.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a recording current adjustment amount detector, connected to said recording current adjusting circuit, and detecting the recording current gain being optimally adjusted to a particular output level
- a memory element for temporarily storing a recording current value as a threshold value representing the minimum recording current needed for performing normal recording and reproducing functions;
- a comparator, connected to said recording current adjustment amount detector, and comparing the particular output level of the recording current with the stored threshold value; and
- a display displaying predetermined data representing a comparison result of said comparator.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a memory element for temporarily storing a recording current value as a threshold value serving as a reference minimum needed to perform normal recording and reproduction;
- a comparator comparing the stored threshold value with a present recording current value being outputted by the recording current adjusting circuit and
- an informing device informing a user of data indicating that at least said write head should be replaced because a comparison result of said comparator satisfies a predetermined condition.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
- a counter for counting a pulse which is output every time a gain of said recording amplifier set by said recording amplifier current adjusting circuit is incremented or decremented by one reference gain step level;
- a memory element holding a predetermined threshold count;
- a comparator comparing an output of said counter with the predetermined threshold count held by said memory element and selectively outputting a signal when a particular relationship between the output of the counter and the threshold count is reached; and
- a display performing a predetermined display in accordance with the signal generated by said comparator.
- 6. A method of recording/reproducing information magnetically, comprising the steps of:
- recording a signal on a magnetic recording medium via a write head;
- supplying a recording current corresponding to the signal to said write head via a recording amplifier;
- reproducing the signal recorded on the magnetic recording medium via a read head;
- generating a reproduced current corresponding to the signal via a reproducing amplifier;
- variably equalizing a waveform of the signal reproduced by said read head by selectively providing particular equalization characteristics to a variable equalizer receiving the reproduced current from the reproducing amplifier;
- detecting an equalization error signal indicating waveform distortion of the waveform of the signal reproduced by the read head including a distortion component caused by wear of the write head, and providing said equalization error signal at an equalization error detector output;
- providing a control Signal to enable the selectable source and disable the selectable control path during a recording current adjusting mode;
- providing a selectable control path to feed the equalization error signal to the variable equalizer has the particular equalization characteristics when the selectable control path is enabled;
- providing a selectable source of fixed reference control equalization characteristics selectable as the particular equalization characteristics when the selectable source is enabled;
- controlling a recording current gain of said recording amplifier on the basis of the equalization error signal supplied from the equalization error detector during said recording current adjusting mode using a recording current adjusting circuit;
- switching an adjusting direction of the recording current in said recording current adjusting circuit so as to decrease distortion as indicated by the equalization error signal at the output of said equalization error detector to thereby adjust a value of the recording current, via said recording current adjusting circuit;
- counting a pulse which is output every time a gain of said recording amplifier set by said recording current adjusting circuit is incremented or decremented by a reference step value, via a counter;
- storing a predetermined threshold count value in a memory element;
- comparing an output of said counter with said predetermined threshold count value and selectively outputting a display signal;
- indicating that there has been excessive head wear when a result of the comparing indicates that the counter output exceeds the threshold counter value;
- checking by said recording current adjusting circuit whether a predetermined distortion detection signal output from said equalization error detector satisfies a predetermined condition; and
- incrementing the gain supplied from said recording current adjusting circuit to said recording amplifier by said reference step value and incrementing the output from said counter by a predetermined value when the distortion is increased.
