Claims
- 1. A magnetic-tape cassette comprising: a housing having first and second major walls which are parallel to one another, two side walls, a rear wall, an opening at the front which extends back into the first major wall, and a partition which separates this front opening from the interior of the housing; two reel hubs supported between the major walls so as to be rotatable about axes which extend perpendicularly to the major walls, the first major wall having two openings through which the drive spindles of a magnetic-tape-cassette apparatus can be coupled to the reel hubs, and a magnetic tape being wound around the reel hubs with a part of the tape extending across the front opening; a front cover movable between closed and open positions and comprising a main portion which in the closed position of the front cover covers the front opening and the part of the magnetic tape which extends across the front opening, and side flanges which are situated one adjacent each side wall of the housing and which are pivotally connected to said side walls; and a sliding plate which is situated on the outside of the housing and which comprises a main portion which is situated adjacent the first major wall of the housing, the sliding plate being slidably guided on the housing for movement parallel to the first major wall towards the rear wall from a closed position in which it latches the front cover in the closed position and in which the main portion of the sliding plate covers the front opening where this opening extends back into the first major wall to an open position to unlatch the front cover and to give access to the front opening for the passage thereinto of tape-withdrawal means of a magnetic-tape-cassette apparatus, characterized in that the second major wall is imperforate over its entire area and the main portion of the front cover is contiguous with this wall in the closed position of said cover and in that the main portion of the sliding plate extends rearwardly beyond the openings in the first major wall in the closed position of the sliding plate to cover said openings and has two apertures which expose said openings when the sliding plate is in the open position, the sliding plate being latched in the closed position by at least one latching member which comprises a latching portion and an actuating portion, the main portion of the sliding plate being provided with a slot or groove which extends rearwardly from the front edge of the main portion of the plate, and the actuating portion being arranged to project into the slot or groove near the rear end thereof in the closed position of the sliding plate.
- 2. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the latching portion and the actuating portion are situated near the free end of a resilient arm which is connected at the other end to the first major wall and whose free end is movable substantially perpendicularly to the plane of the first major wall.
- 3. A magnetic tape cassette as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the latching portion, the actuating portion and the resilient arm form an integral unit with the first major wall.
- 4. A magnetic tape cassette as claimed in claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the resilient arm extends from its free end towards the rear wall.
- 5. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claims 2 or 3, characterized in that the actuating portion has a rounded or pyramidal profile, the latching portion has a rectangular shape and the .[.actuation position.]. .Iadd.actuating portion .Iaddend.is situated adjacent the latching portion in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the sliding plate.
- 6. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the actuating portion is situated beside the latching portion on the resilient arm in a direction parallel to the sliding plate.
- 7. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that the actuating portion is situated on the latching portion, said portions being formed as one integral projection on the resilient arm.
- 8. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that in the closed position of the sliding plate the latching portion is cooperable with a wall of a hole in the inner surface of the sliding plate to latch the sliding plate in the closed position.
- 9. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 8, characterized in that the hole is situated in the bottom-wall of the groove in the sliding plate; and said resilient arm includes an integral projection extending transversely to the direction of movement of the sliding plate, said actuating portion being situated on said latching portion, and said actuating and latching portions being portions of said integral projection.
- 10. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that in the open position of the sliding plate the latching portion is cooperable with the front edge of the sliding plate to latch the sliding plate in the open position.
- 11. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 9, characterized in that in the open position of the sliding plate the latching portion is cooperable with a wall of another hole in the bottom-wall of the groove in the sliding plate to latch the sliding plate in the open position, said another hole being situated near the front edge of the sliding plate.
- 12. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the front cover has a recess in an edge of its main portion, which recess is disposed in line with the slot or groove in the main portion of the sliding plate when the front cover is in the closed position.
- 13. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3, characterized in that the sliding plate comprises side portions which adjoin the main portion and are situated one adjacent each side wall of the housing and which are each guided in a groove in the adjacent side wall.
- 14. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 13, characterized in that in the closed positon of the sliding plate the side portions thereof cooperate with the side flanges of the front cover to latch this cover in the closed position.
- 15. A magnetic-tape cassette as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that when the sliding plate is moved towards the open position its side portions are moved away from the side flanges .[.thereof.]. .Iadd.of .Iaddend.the front cover to unlatch this cover so that it can be swung open.
- 16. A cassette adapted for cooperation between an article in the cassette and parts of an apparatus, comprising
- a cassette housing having first and second major walls on opposite sides of an interior space, said walls being arranged to define a front having an elongated opening extending in a first direction parallel at least to said first wall, and a further opening portion extending from said front opening back into said first major wall,
- at least one reel hub disposed in said interior space, rotatable about an axis perpendicular to said first major wall and aligned with said spindle opening so as to be engageable by a spindle of said apparatus,
- an elongated article wound around said hub, a portion of the elongated article extending along said front opening in a direction generally parallel to said first direction; said portion of the article being disposed and said further opening portion extending into said first major wall a distance sufficient to provide access for a part of said apparatus to pass between said portion of the article and said interior space,
- a front cover having a main portion, said cover being connected to said housing and movable between a closed and an open position, in the closed position said main portion covering said first opening,
- a sliding plate disposed on the outside of the housing, having a main portion adjacent to said first major wall, a spindle opening in said main portion, and a front edge,
- means, responsive to the sliding plate position, for latching the front cover in the closed position, and
- means for slidably guiding said plate parallel to said first major wall between an open position in which the respective spindle openings are aligned with each other to permit passage therethrough of a spindle on said apparatus for driving the reel hub; and a closed position in which said main portion covers at least part of said further opening portion in the first main wall, said front edge adjoins said front cover, and said sliding plate latches the front cover in the closed position,
- characterized in that said second major wall is entirely imperforate,
- in the closed position the main portion of the front cover is contiguous with said second major wall and said sliding plate main portion extends rearwardly beyond said at least one spindle opening in said first major wall,
- said sliding plate has a slot extending rearwardly from the front edge of the main portion; and at least one spindle aperture which, in the open position of the sliding plate, is aligned axially with said at least one spindle opening in said first major wall and with said at least one reel axis, and
- said cassette further comprises plate latching means for latching said sliding plate in the closed position, said plate latching means comprising at least one latching member having a latching portion and an actuating portion, the actuating portion being disposed so as to project into said slot near the rear end thereof when the sliding plate is in the closed position.
- 17. A cassette as claimed in claim 16, characterized in that said sliding plate main portion is substantially planar, and has a given thickness; said groove has a depth, extending from said outer surface toward the cassette interior, less than said given thickness; and said sliding plate has two latching openings therethrough communicating with said groove, and
- said latching member has a resilient arm extending rearwardly from a point of connection to said first major wall, to a free end; at said free end, said latching member has an outwardly extending projection having a latching portion and an actuating portion, arranged such that in the open and in the closed positions said projection is aligned with a respective one of said holes communicating with the groove, said latching portion lying within said hole in the main portion and said actuating portion projecting into said groove, said actuating portion having front and rearward inclined surfaces so arranged that, upon engagement of said actuating portion by an element on an apparatus and displacement of said actuating portion toward the interior space of the cassette, a respective inclined surface is aligned with edges of the latching hole through the main portion of the sliding plate, whereby upon urging of the sliding plate toward the other one of said open and closed positions the edge of the latching hole engages the oblique surface and unlatches said latching member by deforming the resilient arm to move the projection out of the latching hole.
- 18. A cassette as claimed in claims 1, 2 or 3, characterized by comprising two said latching members each disposed in said first major wall near a respective side wall.
- 19. A cassette as claimed in claims 16 or 17, characterized by comprising two said latching members disposed in said first major wall, spaced from each other. .Iadd.
- 20. A magnetic-tape-cassette apparatus adapted for cooperation with a magnetic-tape cassette,
- said cassette comprising a housing having first and second major walls which are parallel to one another, two side walls, a rear wall, an opening at the front which extends back into the first major wall, two reel hubs, a magnetic tape wound around said reel hubs with a part of the tape extending across said front opening, a front cover, a sliding plate moveable between closed and open plate positions, and means for latching said plate alternatively in said open position and said closed position,
- said cover being pivotable between closed and open cover positions, in the closed cover position the cover covering the front opening and the part of the magnetic tape which extends across the front opening,
- said sliding plate being disposed on the outside of said housing and comprising a main portion disposed adjacent the first major wall of the housing, said plate being slidably guided on the housing for movement parallel to the first major wall towards the rear wall from the closed plate position,
- said sliding plate having a main portion which, in the closed plate position, covers the front opening where said opening extends back into the first major wall, in the open plate position said main portion being clear of said front opening to provide access through the front opening into a space behind said part of said tape,
- said cassette comprising means for latching said cover in the closed cover position responsive to said plate being in the closed plate position, said main portion of the sliding plate having a slot or groove formed therein, extending rearwardly from a front edge of the main portion,
- said means for latching said plate further comprising at least one latching member having a latching portion for latching said sliding plate in the closed plate position and an actuating portion, in the closed plate position said actuating portion projecting into said slot or groove near a rear end thereof, and
- said apparatus being arranged for receiving said cassette by insertion of the cassette into the apparatus,
- characterized in that said apparatus comprises an unlatching member arranged to enter said slot or groove during insertion of the cassette and pass along said slot or groove, by relative motion of the cassette with respect to the apparatus, until said relative movement brings said actuating portion of the latching member into engagement with said unlatching member. .Iaddend. .Iadd.21. An apparatus as claimed in claim 20, characterized in that said unlatching member has bevelled front and rear edges, the front edge contacting the actuating portion of the latching member, while the sliding plate is in the open plate position, during withdrawal of the cassette from the apparatus. .Iaddend. .Iadd.22. - said cassette comprising a housing having first and second major walls which are parallel to one another, two side walls, a rear wall, an opening at the front which extends back into the first major wall, and a partition which separates this front opening from the interior of the housing; two reel hubs supported between the major walls so as to be rotatable about axes which extend perpendicularly to the major walls, the first major wall having two openings through which the drive spindles of a magnetic-tape-cassette apparatus can be coupled to the reel hubs, and a magnetic tape being wound around the reel hubs with a part of the tape extending across the front opening; a front cover movable between closed and open positions and comprising a main portion which in the closed position of the front cover covers the front opening and the part of the magnetic tape which extends across the front opening, and side flanges which are situated one adjacent each side wall of the housing and which are pivotally connected to said side walls; and a sliding plate which is situated on the outside of the housing and which comprises a main portion which is situated adjacent the first major wall of the housing, the sliding plate being slidably guided on the housing for movement parallel to the first major wall towards the rear wall from a closed position in which it latches the front cover in the closed position and in which the main portion of the sliding plate covers the front opening where this opening extends back into the first major wall to an open position to unlatch the front cover and to give access to the front opening for the passage thereinto of tape-withdrawal means of a magnetic-tape-cassette apparatus,
- characterized in that the second major wall is imperforate over its entire area and the main portion of the front cover is contiguous with this wall in the closed position of said cover and in that the main portion of the sliding plate extends rearwardly beyond the openings in the first major wall in the closed position of the sliding plate to cover said openings and has two apertures which expose said openings when the sliding plate is in the open position, the sliding plate being latched in the closed position by at least one latching member which comprises a latching portion and an actuating portion, the main portion of the sliding plate being provided with a slot or groove which extends rearwardly from the front edge of the main portion of the plate, and the actuating portion being arranged to project into the slot or groove near the rear end thereof in the closed position of the sliding plate, and
- said apparatus comprising a means for receiving said cassette by insertion of the cassette into the apparatus,
- further characterized in that said means for receiving includes an unlatching member arranged to enter said slot or groove during insertion of the cassette and pass along said slot or groove, by relative motion of the cassette with respect to the apparatus, until said relative movement brings said actuating portion of the latching member into engagement with said unlatching member, and
- said unlatching member is arranged such that upon further insertion movement of the cassette into the apparatus said unlatching member depresses said latching member so as to unlatch the sliding plate. .Iaddend. .Iadd.27. - providing a cassette comprising a housing having first and second major walls which are parallel to one another, two side walls, a rear wall, an opening at the front which extends back into the first major wall, two reel hubs, a magnetic tape wound around said reel hubs with a part of the tape extending across said front opening, a front cover, a sliding plate moveable between closed and open plate positions, and means for latching said plate alternatively in said open position and said closed position,
- said cover being pivotable between closed and open cover positions, in the closed cover position the cover covering the front opening and the part of the magnetic tape which extends across the front opening,
- said sliding plate being disposed on the outside of said housing and comprising a main portion disposed adjacent the first major wall of the housing, said plate being slidably guided on the housing for movement parallel to the first major wall towards the rear wall from the closed plate position,
- said sliding plate having a main portion which, in the closed plate position, covers the front opening where said opening extends back into the first major wall, in the open plate position said main portion being clear of said front opening to provide access through the front opening into a space behind said part of said tape,
- said cassette comprising means for latching said cover in the closed cover position responsive to said plate being in the closed plate position, said main portion of the sliding plate having a slot or groove formed therein, extending rearwardly from a front edge of the main portion,
- said means for latching said plate further comprising at least one latching member having a latching portion for latching said sliding plate in the closed plate position and an actuating portion, in the closed plate position said actuating portion projecting into said slot or groove near a rear end thereof, and
- providing a magnetic tape apparatus having a loading mechanism with an unlatching member arranged stationarily in said loading mechanism, and
- inserting said cassette into said loading mechanism; during insertion of the cassette into the loading mechanism, unlatching and moving the sliding plate of the cassette from the plate closed position to the plate open position by relative movement of the apparatus unlatching member into and along the slot or groove in the main portion of the sliding plate, followed by engagement of the unlatching member with the cassette latching member and then depressing said latching member as a result of further insertion movement of the cassette to unlatch the sliding plate from the

- a sliding shutter member slidable with respect to a lower section of said cassette casing between a first position in which it covers said second opening and a second position in which it exposes said second opening; said shutter member including first and second means for engagingly receiving a locking head of a locking lever at first and second positions of said shutter; and
- a resilient locking lever integrally formed with said cassette casing and having a resiliently deformable lever and a locking head engageable with said shutter member, said locking lever normally holding said shutter member in said first position while said cassette is not in use, and allowing said shutter member to move to said second position when said cassette is inserted into an associated recording and reproducing apparatus, and holding said shutter member at said second position while

- a pivotable lid for pivoting between a closed position covering said first opening of said mouth and a second position exposing said first opening of said mouth;
- a sliding shutter member freely slidable in a front-to-rear direction between first and second sliding positions, said reel shaft apertures and said second opening being exposed in said first sliding position, and said reel shaft apertures and said second opening being covered by said shutter member in said second sliding position, said sliding shutter member cooperating with said pivotal lid in said second sliding position in such a manner that said shutter member prevents said pivotal lid from pivoting to said open position to expose said first opening, wherein said shutter member is provided with first and second means engagingly receiving a locking head of a locking lever in said first and second positions of said shutter; and
- a resilient locking lever integrally formed with said cassette casing and having a locking head engageable with said shutter member at said first and second positions of the latter and a resiliently deformable lever section deformable between a first locking position and a second unlocking position, said lever section normally biasing said head toward said first locking position, and said locking lever normally holding said shutter member in said second position while said cassette is not in use, allowing said shutter member to move to said first position when said cassette is inserted into an associated recording and reproducing apparatus and holding said sliding shutter in said first position while said cassette is

- a pivotable lid for pivoting between a closed position covering said first opening of said mouth and a second position exposing said first opening of said mouth;
- a sliding shutter member freely slidable in a front-to-rear direction between first and second sliding positions, said reel shaft apertures and said second opening being exposed in said first sliding position, and said reel shaft apertures and said second opening being covered by said shutter member in said second sliding position, said sliding shutter member cooperating with said pivotal lid in said second sliding position in such a manner that said shutter member prevents said pivotable lid from pivoting to said open position to expose said first opening, wherein said shutter member is formed with a groove, into which groove a locking head protrudes through one of first and second locking head receiving means; and
- a resilient locking lever integrally formed with said cassette casing and having a locking head engageable with said shutter member at said first and second positions of the latter and a resiliently deformable lever section deformable between a first locking position and a second unlocking position, said lever section normally biasing said head toward said first locking position, and said locking lever normally holding said shutter member in said second position while said cassette is not in use, allowing said shutter member to move to said first position when said cassette is inserted into an associated recording and reproducing apparatus and holding said sliding shutter in said first position while said cassette is

A cassette holder in a recording and reproducing apparatus for a magnetic tape cassette comprising a cassette casing having a mouth through which a magnetic tape is accessible, said mouth including a first opening in a front end face of said casing and a second opening in a lower section of the casing adjacent said front end face, a pair of tape reels around which said magnetic tape is wound, a pivotal lid covering and exposing said first opening of said mouth, a sliding shutter member slidable with respect to the lower section of said cassette casing and adapted to cover and expose said second opening in said lower section, said shutter member being movable between a first position in which it covers said second opening and a second position in which it exposes said second opening, and a locking means for normally holding said shutter member in both of said first and second positions and allowing said shutter member to move from said first position to said second position when said cassette is inserted into an associated recording and reproducing apparatus, and from said second position to said first position where said cassette is ejected said cassette holder comprising:
- a holder body defining a cassette reception space and having a floor on which said cassette is mounted; and
- means, incorporated in said holder body and cooperatively associated with said locking means, for unlocking said locking means, said unlocking means having a first component active at said first position of said shutter member to allow movement of said shutter member from said first position to said second position when said magnetic tape cassette is inserted into said cassette reception space, and a second component active for unlocking said locking means at said second position of said shutter member for allowing movement of said shutter member from said second position to said first position when said magnetic tape cassette is ejected from said recording and reproducing apparatus. .Iaddend. .Iadd.41. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 40, wherein said unlocking means comprises a projection means projecting from said floor of said holder body, said projection means having a leading edge serving as said first component for actuating said locking means into an unlocking position to allow said shutter member to move from said first position to said second position during insertion of said magnetic tape cassette into said cassette reception space in said holder body, and a trailing edge serving as said second component for actuating said locking means into an unlocking position to allow said shutter member to move from said second position to said first position during ejection of said magnetic tape cassette from said cassette reception space in said holder body. .Iaddend. .Iadd.42. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 41, wherein said leading and trailing edges of said projection means are slanted so that the functions
- of said locking means are smoothly accomplished. .Iaddend. .Iadd.43. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 40, which is adapted to receive magnetic tape cassettes which further comprise a pair of reel hubs housed in said cassette casing which hold said tape reels within said cassette casing, and around which a magnetic tape is wound and which are exposed from the lower surface of said cassette casing through openings formed in the lower section of the cassette casing, a pivotable front lid mounted near the front of said cassette casing and covering an opening in the front part of said cassette casing, and said sliding shutter member is formed with a pair of reel shaft insertion apertures through which a pair of reel shafts can engage said reel hubs, said sliding shutter member positioning said reel shaft insertion apertures in a position offset from said opening in the lower section of said cassette casing at its first position and in alignment with said reel shaft insertion apertures at its second position. .Iaddend. .Iadd.44. A cassette holder in a recording and reproducing apparatus for a magnetic tape cassette of the type which comprises a cassette casing, a sliding shutter member slidable with respect to a portion of said cassette casing and adapted to cover and expose an opening in said portion of said cassette casing wherein said shutter member is movable between a first position in which it covers the opening and a second position in which it exposes the opening, and a locking means for normally holding said shutter member respectively in each said first and second positions and structurally adapted to allow said shutter member to move from said first position to said second position when said cassette is inserted into an associated recording and reproducing apparatus, and from said second position to said first position when said cassette is ejected, said cassette holder comprising:
- means incorporated in said cassette holder and cooperatively associated with said locking means on said cassette during both insertion and ejection for unlocking said locking means, said unlocking means including an insertion unlocking portion active at said first position of said shutter member to allow movement of said shutter member from said first position to said second position when said magnetic tape cassette is inserted into said cassette holder and an ejection unlocking means active for unlocking said locking means at said second position of said shutter member for allowing movement of said shutter member from said second position to said first position when said magnetic tape cassette is ejected from said recording and reproducing apparatus. .Iaddend. .Iadd.45. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 44, wherein said unlocking means comprises a projection means projecting from a floor of said cassette holder, said projection means defining both said insertion unlocking means and said ejection unlocking means. .Iaddend. .Iadd.46. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 45, wherein said insertion unlocking means comprises an edge of said projection means for actuating said locking means into an unlocking position to allow said shutter member to move from said first position to said second position during insertion of said magnetic tape cassette into said cassette holder. .Iaddend. .Iadd.47. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 45, wherein said ejection unlocking means comprises another edge of said projection means for actuating said unlocking means into an unlocking position to allow said shutter member to move from said second position to said first position during ejection of said magnetic tape cassette from said cassette reception space in said holder body. .Iaddend. .Iadd.48. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 44, wherein said cassette holder defines a projection having a first tapered end and said cassette defines a cut-out which receives said projection upon insertion of said cassette into said cassette holder. .Iaddend. .Iadd.49. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 44, wherein the sliding shutter member of said cassette includes a groove and a locking lever defining a locking head, said cassette and said cassette holder cooperating upon insertion so that said locking head is urged upwardly and maintained in such position during insertion of said cassette by contact of said locking head with a surface of said projection. .Iaddend. .Iadd.50. The cassette holder as set forth in claim 49, wherein said cassette further includes a front end cut-out on said sliding shutter member so that when the cassette is fully inserted into said cassette holder and said sliding shutter member is in its predetermined rearwardmost position, said locking head engages said front end cut-out to lock said sliding shutter member in its rearwardmost position. .Iaddend.
