Claims
- 1. A tufting machine, comprising:
a plurality of needles for receiving yarns; a needle push drive for repeatedly driving the needles in the backing material and then for withdrawing the needles from the backing material; the needles forcing the yarns into the backing material when the needles are inserted into the backing material by the needle push drive; a needle bar for being coupled to the plurality of needles; a needle shifting drive for selectively shifting the needle bar across the backing material; a bed rail for supporting the backing material; a bed rail drive for positioning the backing material at a desired height relative to the needles; the tufting machine comprising one of the following:
(a) a set of loopers for holding loops of the yarns as the yarns are being inserted into the backing material by the needles and a looper drive for driving the loopers; or (b) a set of hooks for holding lengths of the yarns which have been inserted into the backing material by the needles, a hook drive for driving the hooks, a set of knives for cutting the lengths of the yarns which have been inserted into the backing material, and a knife drive for driving the knives; wherein at least one of the needle shifting drive, needle push drive, bed rail drive, looper drive, knife drive, and hook drive comprises a linear servo drive.
- 2. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the linear servo drive comprises a magnetic drive.
- 3. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the linear servo drive comprises a tubular linear drive.
- 4. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the linear servo drive comprises a flat drive.
- 5. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein a plurality of the needle shifting drive, needle push drive, bed rail drive, looper drive, knife drive, and hook drive comprise a linear servo drive.
- 6. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of the needle shifting drive, needle push drive, bed rail drive, looper drive, knife drive, and hook drive comprise a linear servo drive.
- 7. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, further comprising a processor for controlling a position of the linear servo drive.
- 8. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 7, further comprising a position sensor for detecting a position of the linear servo drive and for providing the processor with the position.
- 9. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 8, wherein the position sensor detects a home position of the linear servo drive.
- 10. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 8, wherein the position sensor comprises a plurality of sensors that detect a permissible range of motion for the linear servo drive.
- 11. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 7, further comprising a timing unit for providing timing information to the processor, the processor using the timing information to synchronize the linear servo drive with each of the other of the needle shifting drive, needle push drive, bed rail drive, looper drive, knife drive, and hook drive.
- 12. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the tufting machine comprises the set of loopers for holding loops of the yarns as the yarns are being inserted into the backing material by the needles and the looper drive for driving the loopers.
- 13. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the tufting machine comprises the set of hooks for holding lengths of the yarns which have been inserted into the backing material by the needles, the hook drive for driving the hooks, the set of knives for cutting the lengths of the yarns which have been inserted into the backing material, and the knife drive for driving the knives.
- 14. The tufting machine as set forth in claim 1, wherein the linear servo drive comprises the needle shifting drive.
