Claims
- 1. A magneto-optical disk apparatus which performs at least one of recording and reproduction of information with a magneto-optical recording medium having a disk shape, said apparatus comprising:
- optical means for irradiating with a light beam a portion of a magneto-optical recording medium from one side of the medium;
- first magnetic field applying means for applying a magnetic field, modulated according to information, from a side opposite to the one side of the medium, to the portion of the medium which is irradiated with the light beam, said first magnetic field applying means comprising a magnetic head for generating the magnetic field and supporting means extending in a radial direction with respect to the medium for supporting said magnetic head;
- second magnetic field applying means for applying a constant magnetic field to the portion of the medium which is irradiated with the light beam, said second magnetic field applying means comprising (i) a core member of a substantial ring shape having a gap in a portion thereof, which includes a first core member arranged on the one side of the medium and a second core member arranged on the side opposite to the one side of the medium, substantially parallel to said supporting means along a surface of the medium, said core member having two ends located on either side of the medium such that the gap is positioned at the portion of the medium which is irradiated with the light beam, and (ii) a coil wound around a portion of said core member;
- moving means for moving said first and second magnetic field applying means and said optical means together in the radial direction with respect to the medium;
- step-back means for making said first and second magnetic field applying means, which are mounted on said moving means, independently step back from near the medium, said step-back means comprising (i) a first step-back mechanism for making said second magnetic field applying means step back from near the medium in mechanical synchronism with a carrying operation of the medium in the apparatus, (ii) judging means for judging a type of the medium and (iii) a second step-back mechanism for making said first magnetic field applying means step back from near the medium in accordance with a judgment result of said judging means,
- wherein the medium is accommodated in a cartridge case having an identifier and said judging means judges whether the medium is a recording medium for optical modulation or a recording medium for magnetic field modulation, on the basis of the identifier provided on the cartridge case.
- 2. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first step-back mechanism rotates said second magnetic field applying means about a rotation shaft provided on said moving means to effect step-back thereof.
- 3. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising a holder for carrying the recording medium in the apparatus, wherein said first step-back mechanism makes said second magnetic field applying means step back from near the recording medium in mechanical synchronism with an up and down motion of said holder in the apparatus.
- 4. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said step-back means further comprises means for detecting whether the medium is loaded at a desired loading position in the apparatus, wherein said second step-back mechanism makes said first magnetic field applying means step back from near the medium when the detecting means detects that the medium is not loaded at the desired loading position.
- 5. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first step-back mechanism makes only the second core member of said second magnetic field applying means step back from near the medium.
- 6. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said first step-back mechanism is connected through an elastic member with a high thermal conductivity to said second magnetic field applying means.
- 7. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said optical means comprises an objective lens and objective lens driving means for moving said objective lens relative to the medium.
- 8. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 7, wherein said objective lens driving means comprises an objective lens holder for holding said objective lens, a coil disposed on said objective lens holder, a permanent magnet for applying a magnetic field to said coil, and a yoke.
- 9. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said first core member of said second magnetic field applying means is magnetically connected to the yoke of said objective lens driving means.
- 10. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said first core member is magnetically connected to said yoke through a thin plate made of a material having a high magnetic flux density.
- 11. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said second magnetic field applying means performs no operation while said first magnetic field applying means is in operation.
- 12. A magneto-optical disk apparatus according to claim 1, wherein an AC attenuating voltage is applied to the coil of said second magnetic field applying means while said second magnetic field applying means is not operating.
