Claims
- 1. An optical pickup for reading information from a magneto-optical disk including: a transparent substrate; pit strings containing information, formed in spiral or concentric form on a surface of said transparent substrate; a magneto-optical recording medium layer for covering a surface of said transparent substrate having said pit strings formed thereon; and magneto-optical recording areas formed by spiral or concentric flat portions between adjacent pit strings,
- said optical pickup comprising:
- a light source;
- a beam splitter for transmitting a light beam from said light source to said magneto-optical disk and reflecting light from said magneto-optical disk;
- a polarization beam splitter for extracting two orthogonal polarized components from the light reflected by said beam splitter;
- two photodetectors for detecting a light intensity of each of said polarized components extracted by said polarization beam splitter; and
- means for outputting the sum of outputs of said photodetectors as a readout signal when the light beam falls upon one of said pit strings on said magneto-optical disk, and outputting the difference between the outputs of said photodetectors as a readout signal when the light beam falls upon a portion between said pit strings on said magneto-optical disk.
- 2. The optical pickup according to claim 1, further comprising means for shaping a light spot of the light beam on said magneto-optical disk into an oval whose longer axis lies in a track direction when reproducing information from said magneto-optical recording area.
- 3. A magneto-optical disk drive for recording and reproducing information on a magneto-optical disk including: a transparent substrate; pit strings containing information, formed in spiral or concentric form on a surface of said transparent substrate; and a magneto-optical recording medium layer for covering a surface of said transparent substrate having said pit strings formed thereon; and magneto-optical recording areas formed by spiral or concentric flat portions between adjacent pit strings,
- said magneto-optical disk drive comprising means for magneto-optically recording information in said magneto-optical recording areas so that a frequency distribution of a reproduced signal obtained when the information recorded as said pit strings is reproduced and a frequency distribution of a reproduced signal obtained when the magneto-optically recorded information is reproduced from said magneto-optical recording areas become substantially equal to each other.
- 4. The magneto-optical disk drive according to claim 3, further comprising means for inputting and outputting information,
- wherein information is recorded and reproduced on said magneto-optical disk at a speed at least twice faster than an input and output speed of said means for inputting and outputting the information.
- 5. A magneto-optical disk comprising:
- a transparent substrate;
- pit strings containing information recorded in spiral or concentric form on a surface of said transparent substrate;
- a magneto-optical recording medium layer for covering the surface of said transparent substrate having said pit strings formed thereon; and
- first magneto-optical recording areas formed by spiral or concentric flat portions between adjacent pit strings,
- wherein;
- a length of reproduction-use tracks formed by said pit strings and a length of magneto-optical recording-use tracks formed by said flat portions between the pit strings are substantially equal; and
- a pitch of said reproduction-use tracks is substantially equal to a diameter of a portion having a minimum light intensity, between a main beam of a reproduction-use light beam focused on said magneto-optical disk and light components thereof on sides to the main beam.
- 6. The magneto-optical disk drive according to claim 3, further comprising:
- input means for inputting information;
- output means for outputting information;
- memory means for fetching reproduced information from the magneto-optical disk, which is inputted at a speed at least two times faster than an operating speed of said output means, so as to output the information at a constant speed into said output means and simultaneously fetching the information from said input means so as to give the information as recording information to the magneto-optical disk.
- 7. The magneto-disk drive according to claim 3, further comprising:
- a video camera where image information is inputted;
- a television monitor where the image information is outputted; and
- a buffer memory for fetching image reproduced information from the magneto-optical disk, which is inputted at a speed at least two times faster than an operating speed of said television monitor, so as to output the image information at a constant speed to said television monitor, and simultaneously fetching image information from said video camera so as to give the image information as recording information to the magneto-optical disk.
- 8. The magneto-optical disk according to claim 5, wherein a proportion of a width of said reproduction-use track to a width of said magneto-optical-recording use track is 1:3.
- 9. The magneto-optical disk according to claim 5, further comprising second magneto-optical recording areas formed by spiral or concentric portions on said pit strings,
- wherein a magneto-optical-recording-use bit recorded in said second magneto-optical recording areas has a width greater than that of said pit.
- 10. The magneto-optical disk according to claim 9, wherein said pit has a depth of .lambda./(10n), where .lambda. and n are a wavelength of the reproduction-use light beam and a refractive index of said transparent substrate, respectively.
- 11. A magneto-optical disk comprising:
- a transparent substrate;
- pit strings containing information recorded in spiral or concentric form on a surface of said transparent substrate;
- a magneto-optical recording medium layer for covering the surface of said transparent substrate having said pit strings formed thereon; and
- magneto-optical recording areas formed by spiral or concentric flat portions between adjacent pit strings,
- wherein a length of reproduction-use tracks formed by said pit strings and a length of magneto-optical recording-use tracks formed by said flat portions between the pit strings are substantially equal throughout a recording surface of said magneto-optical disk.
- 12. The optical pickup according to claim 1, further comprising:
- an objective lens for converging, onto said magneto-optical disk, the light beam from said light source transmitted through said beam splitter;
- a holder for holding said objective lens; and
- an actuator for driving said holder in a tracking direction.
- 13. The optical pickup according to claim 12, further comprising shielding means for shutting off a center portion of the light beam entering said objective lens.
- 14. The optical pickup according to claim 13, wherein said shielding means is a circular metal film formed on a center portion of a surface of said objective lens.
- 15. The optical pickup according to claim 14, wherein a diameter of said metal film is one fifth of a diameter of said objective lens.
