An information recording process for recording on a magnetooptical recording medium which comprises a first magnetic layer and a second magnetic layer having a higher Curie point and a lower coercive force than those of the first magnetic layer and being exchange coupled with the first magnetic layer, the first and second magnetic layers satisfying the condition: ##EQU11## wherein H.sub.H is the coercive force of the first magnetic layer;
- H.sub.L is the coercive force of the second magnetic layer,
- M.sub.s is the saturation magnetization of the second magnetic layer;
- .sigma..sub.w is the magnetic wall energy between the first and second magnetic layers; and
- h is the thickness of the second magnetic layer,
- the process comprising steps of:
- applying a magnetic field of a magnitude B for orienting the magnetization of the second magnetic layer in a predetermined direction, while retaining the direction of magnetization of the first magnetic layer; and
- selectively effecting either a first type of recording by irradiating the medium with a light beam having a power sufficient to heat the medium close to the Curie point of the first magnetic layer, thereby orienting the direction of magnetization of the first magnetic layer in a direction that is stable with respect to the direction of magnetization of the second magnetic layer while retaining the direction of magnetization of the second magnetic layer, or a second type of recording by irradiating the medium with a light beam having a power sufficient to heat the medium close to the Curie point of the second magnetic layer while applying a bias magnetic field, thereby inverting the direction of magnetization of the second magnetic layer and orienting the direction of magnetization of the first magnetic layer in a direction that is stable with respect to the direction of magnetization of the second magnetic layer, according to an information signal,
- wherein the process is performed under a temperature condition of 30.degree. C.-60.degree. C. and satisfies the following relationships:
- H.sub.H .gtoreq.1.5 (kOe), and
- 0.2.times.H.sub.H -0.3>B (kOe).
