Claims
- 1. An image display which comprises:
(a) two layers of substrate, one on the viewing side and the other on the non-viewing side and at least the substrate on the viewing side is transparent; (b) an array of cells sandwiched between the two layers and said cells are filled with a dispersion in which magnetic particles are suspended in a solvent or solvent mixture; and (c) a writing means.
- 2. The image display of claim 1 further comprises an erasing means.
- 3. The image display of claim 1 wherein said magnetic particles are paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic particles.
- 4. The image display of claim 1 wherein said magnetic particles are prepared from materials selected from a group consisting of gamma ferric oxide, acicular magnetite, cobalt-modified or adsorbed ferric oxide, berthollide ferric oxide, chromium dioxide, metals or alloys and organic polyradicals.
- 5. The image display of claim 4 wherein said metal or alloy is stainless steel, Fe—Co, Fe—Ni, Fe—Co—Ni, Co—Ni, Co—Cr or Fe—Co—V alloy.
- 6. The image display of claim 4 wherein said organic polyradical is selected from a group consisting of polymers with organic radicals in the side chain, main-chain conjugated polymers with organic radicals, two dimensional polyradicals, polymers containing paramagnetic metalloporphyrins as side chains and polymers containing paramagnetic metal ions in the main chain.
- 7. The image display of claim 6 wherein said paramagnetic metal ion is Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) or VO(II).
- 8. The image display of claim 1 wherein said magnetic particles are particles magnetized by overcoating or microencapsulating with a magnetic shell.
- 9. The image display of claim 8 wherein said magnetic shell is formed from a material selected from a group consisting of gamma ferric oxide, acicular magnetite, cobalt-modified or adsorbed ferric oxide, berthollide ferric oxide, chromium dioxide, metals or alloys and organic polyradicals.
- 10. The image display of claim 9 wherein said organic polyradical is selected from a group consisting of polymers with organic radicals in the side chain, main-chain conjugated polymers with organic radicals, two dimensional polyradicals, polymers containing paramagnetic metalloporphyrins as side chains and polymers containing paramagnetic metal ions in the main chain.
- 11. The image display of claim 9 wherein said a metal or alloy is selected from a group consisting of Ni, Cu, Co, Fe, Cr, Fe—Co, Fe—Ni, Fe—Co—Ni, Co—Ni, Co—Cr and Fe—Co—V alloys.
- 12. The image display of claim 11 wherein said metal or alloy shell is coated onto the particles by sputtering, vacuum deposition, electrodeposition, electroplating or electroless plating.
- 13. The image display of claim 8 wherein said magnetic shell is a magnetic polymer shell coated onto the particles by a microencapsulation processes.
- 14. The image display of claim 13 wherein said magnetic polymer shell is formed of a polymer selected from a group consisting of polymers with organic radicals in the side chain, main-chain conjugated polymers with organic radicals, two dimensional polyradicals, polymers containing paramagnetic metalloporphyrins as side chains and polymers containing paramagnetic metal ions in the main chain.
- 15. The image display of claim 14 wherein said paramagnetic metal ion is Cu(II), Ni(II), Mn(II) or VO(II).
- 16. The image display of claim 13 wherein said microencapsulation process is phase separation, simple and complex coacervation, interfacial polymerization or crosslinking, in-situ polymerization or crosslinking, phase separation, spray drying, fluidized bed drying, orifice or in-liquid curing or hardening.
- 17. The image display of claim 1 wherein said magnetic particles are microcapsules containing a magnetic material dispersed in a polymeric matrix.
- 18. The image display of claim 17 wherein said microcapsules further comprise a pigment or dye.
- 19. The image display of claim 18 wherein said pigment is white TiO2 or ZnO.
- 20. The image display of claim 18 wherein said pigment is colored.
- 21. The image display of claim 1 wherein said magnetic particles are colored or black.
- 22. The image display of claim 21 wherein said black magnetic particles are prepared from gamma ferric oxide, acicular magnetite, cobalt-modified or adsorbed ferric oxide, berthollide ferric oxide or chromium dioxide.
- 23. The image display of claim 1 wherein said array of cells are the partition type cells.
- 24. The image display of claim 1 wherein said array of cells are the microencapsulated cells.
- 25. The image display of claim 1 wherein said array of cells are the individually sealed microcup cells.
- 26. The image display of claim 25 wherein said cells are individually sealed with a polymeric layer.
- 27. The image display of claim 1 which is an e-sign, e-bulletin, whiteboard or copy board.
- 28. The image display of claim 2 wherein said magnetic particles are of the same color dispersed in a clear solvent of a contrast color.
- 29. The image display of claim 28 wherein said particles are non-charged.
- 30. The image display of claim 29 wherein said writing means is a magnetic writing head.
- 31. The image display of claim 30 wherein said magnetic writing head is on the non-viewing side or viewing side.
- 32. The image display of claim 29 wherein said erasing means is a magnetic eraser head.
- 33. The image display of claim 32 wherein said magnetic eraser head is on the viewing side or non-viewing side.
- 34. The image display of claim 29 wherein said writing means is a magnetic pen.
- 35. The image display of claim 34 wherein said magnetic pen is on the viewing side.
- 36. The image display of claim 29 wherein said erasing means is a manual magnetic eraser.
- 37. The image display of claim 36 wherein said manual magnetic eraser is on the viewing side.
- 38. The image display of claim 2 further comprising a conductive film layer placed between the bottom of the cells and the substrate on the non-viewing side.
- 39. The image display of claim 38 wherein said magnetic particles are of the same color dispersed in a clear solvent of a contrast color.
- 40. The image display of claim 39 wherein said particles are charged.
- 41. The image display of claim 39 wherein said writing means is a magnetic writing head.
- 42. The image display of claim 41 wherein said magnetic writing head is on the non-viewing side or viewing side.
- 43. The image display of claim 39 wherein said erasing means is a magnetic eraser head.
- 44. The image display of claim 43 wherein said magnetic erasing head is on the viewing side or non-viewing side.
- 45. The image display of claim 39 wherein said writing means is a magnetic pen.
- 46. The image display of claim 45 wherein said magnetic pen is on the viewing side.
- 47. The image display of claim 39 wherein said erasing means is a manual magnetic eraser.
- 48. The image display of claim 47 wherein said manual magnetic eraser is on the viewing side.

- 51. The image display of claim 2 wherein particles are of two contrast colors dispersed in a clear colorless or colored solvent and particles of one color are magnetic.
- 52. The image display of claim 51 wherein particles of both colors are non-charged.
- 53. The image display of claim 52 wherein said writing means is a magnetic writing head.
- 54. The image display of claim 53 wherein said magnetic writing head is on the non-viewing side or viewing side.
- 55. The image display of claim 52 wherein said erasing means is a magnetic eraser head.
- 56. The image display of claim 55 wherein said magnetic erasing head is on the viewing side or non-viewing side.
- 57. The image display of claim 52 wherein said writing means is a magnetic pen.
- 58. The image display of claim 57 wherein said magnetic pen is on the viewing side.

- 62. The image display of claim 61 wherein particles of one color are charged.
- 63. The image display of claim 61 wherein particles of both colors are charged.
- 64. The image display of claim 63 wherein particles of the two colors are oppositely charged.
- 65. The image display of claim 63 wherein particles of the two colors have charges of the same polarity but have significantly different electrophoretic mobility.
- 66. The image display of claim 61 wherein said writing means is a magnetic writing head.
- 67. The image display of claim 66 wherein said magnetic writing head is on the non-viewing side or viewing side.
- 68. The image display of claim 61 wherein said erasing means is a magnetic eraser head.
- 69. The image display of claim 68 wherein said magnetic erasing head is on the viewing side or non-viewing side.
