An award has been made to Point Loma Nazarene College under the direction of Dr. Dawne M. Page to acquire several instruments to enhance research and teaching in molecular and cell biology at the college. A real-time PCR system, a fluorescence stereoscope and flow cytometer will be purchased. Three faculty members will be the primary users of the instruments. Their research involves the immune system and genetic expression of spermatogenesis in the zebrafish (a model organism developmental research), and for genetic and ecological studies of microbial communities in acid environments. The college has a very active program of student research that has produced a large number of men and women who have gone on to advanced studies in the biological sciences. The instruments will be accessible to undergraduates and will provide them with stimulating hands-on experience in biological research.
