Claims
- 1. A method of making a temperature-stable protectively coated graphite molded body, comprising the steps of:
- making a molded body by conglomerating in a mold particles of at least one carbonaceous material of at least partly graphitic composition, said particles being coated with a synthetic resin binder;
- applying to said body, before any heating thereof to a coking temperature, successive layers of one or more materials of the kind or kinds used in the conglomerating step mixed with an admixture of between nearly zero atomic % and about 50 atomic % of a substance selected from the group consisting of silicon and zirconium, said substance being in the form of particles coated with said synthetic resin binder, said layers being applied in such a way that the layer nearest said molded body contains the smallest proportion of said substance and the outermost layer the highest proportional content thereof, with the other layers providing intermediate gradations of such proportional content, to produce a coated body;
- heating the body after each layer application to a heat treatment sufficient to harden the binder; and
- after the application of the last layer, further heating the body, first to coke the body including the layers and then, by a rapid rise of temperature to a temperature in the range of from 1500.degree. C. to 1800.degree. C., to convert said substance at least partially into its carbide.
- 2. A method of making temperature-stable protectively coated graphite molded bodies, comprising the steps of:
- making graphitic molded bodies by conglomerating in a mold particles of carbonaceous material of at least partly graphitic composition coated with a synthetic resin binder;
- suspending a powder of a substance selected from the group consisting of silicon and zirconium in a phenolformaldehyde solution also containing graphite powder;
- dipping each of said bodies at least once in said suspension;
- then, after removal of each said body from said suspension, coking each said body by heating it in a protective atmosphere to a temperature in the range from 650.degree. C. to 850.degree. C.;
- then heating each said body rapidly up to a temperature in the range from 1500.degree. C. to 1800.degree. C. for the formation of the carbide of said selected substance, and
- then cooling down each said body to room temperature.
- 3. A method as defined in claim 2 in which said step of suspending a powder in solution is repeated to produce a plurality of suspensions having respectively different proportional carbon contents, relative to the content of said substance selected from the group which consists of silicon and zirconium, within the range of 95 to 50 atomic %, and in which the dipping step is repeated for each said body by first dipping said body in the suspension having the smallest proportional content of said substance and the greatest proportional carbon content and then successively dipping said body in the others of said suspensions in the order of increasing content of said substance and decreasing carbon content, said bodies being each dried, and subjected to a heat treatment for hardening the binder produced by the phenol-formaldehyde content of the suspension, after each dipping step.
