Claims
- 1. An enzymatic oxidation process wherein a selected substrate to be oxidized is contacted with mammalian catalase in the absence of hydrogen peroxide.
- 2. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 wherein the selected substrate is oxidized by mammalian catalase to a fluorescent product.
- 3. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 2 used in chemifluorescence techniques.
- 4. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 wherein the selected substrate is oxidized by mammalian catalase to a chemiluminescent product.
- 5. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 4 used in chemiluminescence techniques.
- 6. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 used in bleaching or anti dye-transfer techniques.
- 7. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 used to polymerize lignin.
- 8. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 used to polymerize phenolic substances.
- 9. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 used in an antimicrobial treatment of microorganisms or viruses.
- 10. The enzymatic oxidation process of claim 1 used to detoxify phenolic pollutants.
- 11. A chemifluorescence detection technique comprising a mammalian catalase enzyme and a selected substrate oxidized by the mammalian catalase enzyme to a fluorescent product.
- 12. A chemiluminescent detection technique comprising a mammalian catalase enzyme and a selected substrate oxidized by the mammalian catalase enzyme to a chemiluminescent product.
- 13. A screening assay for compounds that inhibit mammalian catalase comprising measuring oxidation of a selected substrate by mammalian catalase in the presence and absence of a test compound, wherein a decrease in oxidation of the selected substrate in the presence of the test compound is indicative of the test compound inhibiting mammalian catalase activity.
- 14. The assay of claim 13 wherein the test compound identified as an inhibitor of mammalian catalase activity is useful as a chemopreventative agent.
- 15. The assay of claim 13 wherein the test compound identified as an inhibitor of mammalian catalase activity prevents breakdown of drugs by oxidation reaction.
- 16. A screening assay to identify pharmacological agents activated by oxidation comprising contacting the pharmacological agent with mammalian catalase and measuring for activation of the pharmacological agent.
- 17. The screening assay of claim 16 wherein the pharmacological agent is a prodrug and activation is measured by amount of drug produced.
- 18. A method for accelerating oxidation of a selected substrate by mammalian catalase comprising exposing a mixture containing the selected substrate and mammalian catalase to ultraviolet light.
- 19. A method for identifying compounds which inhibit damage of tissue by exposure to ultraviolet light comprising measuring oxidation of a mixture of a selected substrate and mammalian catalase, said mixture being exposed to ultraviolet light, in the presence and absence of a test compound, wherein a decrease in oxidation of the substrate in the presence of the test compound is indicative of the test compound inhibiting damage of tissue exposed to ultraviolet light.
