Claims
- 1. In a system that includes a fax machine and a computer device, a method for managing data in compliance with regulated privacy, security, and electronic transaction standards, the method comprising the steps for:
receiving a transmission set from the fax machine; using the computer device to preserve a digital copy of the transmission set for a period of time, wherein the period of time satisfies an established regulation; and providing a confirmation to the fax machine to indicate receipt of the entire transmission set.
- 2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the transmission set includes at least one of:
(i) a bar code; (ii) an information sheet; and (iii) an end of transmission sheet.
- 3. A method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step for selectively accessing at least some data associated with the digital copy.
- 4. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the confirmation includes an identifier corresponding to the digital copy.
- 5. A method as recited in claim 4, wherein the step for selectively accessing at least some data associated with the digital copy further comprises the step for using the identifier to selectively access the data.
- 6. A method as recited in claim 3, wherein the step for selectively accessing at least some data associated with the digital copy further comprises the steps for:
a receiving a request for information through a single point of entry; retrieving the requested information; assembling a report, wherein the report includes at least one of:
(i) the request; (ii) the requested information; and (iii) an audit trail; and transmitting a copy of the report to the requestor.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6, wherein the request is an authenticated request.
- 8. A method as recited in claim 6, further comprising the step for determining whether patient authorization exists for responding to the request, wherein if patient authorization has not been obtained, performing the step for obtaining patient authorization to provide the requested information.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 8, wherein the copy of the report includes at least one of:
(i) patient specific information; and (ii) de-identified information.
- 10. A method as recited in claim 6, further comprising the step for determining whether to provide de-identified information in response to the request, wherein if de-identified information is to be provided, performing the step for de-identifying the information requested.
- 11. A method as recited in claim 6, further comprising at least one of the steps for:
(i) selectively performing a review of the report; (ii) selectively encrypting the report; (iii) selectively archiving the report;
- 12. A method as recited in claim 11, wherein the report is archived for a period of time set by a regulation.
- 13. A system for managing data in compliance with regulated privacy, security, and electronic transaction standards, the system comprising:
a fax machine coupled to a communication medium; a computer system coupled to the communication medium, wherein the computer system is configured to receive a transmission set from the fax machine, and wherein the computer system is configured to provide a confirmation to the fax machine to indicate receipt of the entire transmission set; and a storage medium of the computer system that is configured to preserve a digital copy of information from the transmission set for a regulatory period of time, and wherein the computer system.
- 14. A system as recited in claim 13, wherein the computer system comprises:
a single point of entry that is configured to selectively receive a request for personal information; and a single point of exit that is configured to selectively provide a report in response to the request.
- 15. A system as recited in claim 14, wherein the request is an electronic request.
- 16. A system as recited in claim 13, wherein the transmission set includes at least one of:
(i) medical information; (ii) financial information; and (iii) academic information.
- 17. A computer program product for implementing within a computer system a method for managing data in compliance with regulated privacy, security, and electronic transaction standards, the computer program product comprising:
a computer readable medium for providing computer program code means utilized to implement the method, wherein the computer program code means is comprised of executable code for implementing the steps for:
receiving a transmission set from a fax machine; preserving a digital copy of the transmission set for a period of time to satisfy a regulation; and providing a confirmation to the fax machine to indicate receipt of the entire transmission set.
- 18. A computer program product as recited in claim 17, wherein the computer program code means is further comprised of executable code for implementing the step for scanning a bar code of the transmission set to obtain information relating to the transmission set.
- 19. A computer program product as recited in claim 17, wherein the computer program code means is further comprised of executable code for implementing the step for selectively providing at least some data associated with the digital copy.
- 20. A computer program product as recited in claim 19, wherein the step for selectively providing at least some data associated with the digital copy further comprises the step for receiving an identifier assigned to the transmission set to selectively access data.
