Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant named ‘Sunpa 2671’, characterized by its climbing plant habit; vigorous growth habit; freely branching habit; early and freely flowering habit; long flowering period; and medium-sized yellow-colored flowers with yellow orange-colored throats.
Description

Botanical designation: Mandevilla hybrida.

Cultivar denomination: ‘SUNPA 2671’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant, botanically known as Mandevilla hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Sunpa 2671’.

The new Mandevilla plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventors in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The objective of the breeding program is to create new freely branching Mandevilla plants with freely flowering habit and attractive flowers.

The new Mandevilla plant originated from a cross-pollination in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan in May, 2013 of a proprietary selection of Mandevilla hybrida identified as code number 09M111-1, not patented, as the female, or seed parent with a proprietary selection of Mandevilla hybrida identified as code number 09M111-1self-1, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Mandevilla plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan in September, 2014.

Asexual reproduction of the new Mandevilla plant by terminal vegetative cuttings in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan since March, 2015 has shown that the unique features of this new Mandevilla plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Mandevilla have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repcatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Sunpa 2671’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Sunpa 2671’ as a new and distinct Mandevilla plant:

    • 1. Climbing plant habit.
    • 2. Vigorous growth habit.
    • 3. Freely branching habit.
    • 4. Early and freely flowering habit.
    • 5. Long flowering period.
    • 6. Medium-sized yellow-colored flowers with yellow orange-colored throats.

Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the female parent selection. Plants of the new Mandevilla differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in flower color as plants of the new Mandevilla have yellow-colored flowers with yellow orange-colored throats whereas plants of the female parent selection have pale yellowish pink-colored flowers.

Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the male parent selection. Plants of the new Mandevilla differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in flower color as plants of the new Mandevilla have yellow-colored flowers with yellow orange-colored throats whereas plants of the male parent selection have soft pink-colored flowers.

Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the Mandevilla hybrida ‘Sunpapri’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,277. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Mandevilla differ from plants of ‘Sunpapri’ in the following characteristics:

    • 1. Plants of the new Mandevilla have shorter internodes than plants of ‘Sunpapri’.
    • 2. Plants of the new Mandevilla have smaller leaves with shorter petioles than plants of ‘Sunpapri’.
    • 3. Plants of the new Mandevilla have smaller flowers than plants of ‘Sunpapri’.
    • 4. Plants of the new Mandevilla and ‘Sunpapri’ differ in flower color as plants of the new Mandevilla have yellow-colored flowers with yellow orange-colored throats whereas plants of ‘Sunpapri’ have light to pale orange-colored flowers with orange-colored throats.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Mandevilla plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Mandevilla plant.

The photograph on the first sheet comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Sunpa 2671’ grown in a container.

The photograph on the second sheet is a close-up view of typical flowers and flower buds of ‘Sunpa 2671’.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the summer in 15-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan and under cultural practices typical of commercial Mandevilla production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 25° C. and night temperatures averaged 15° C. Plants were six months old when the photographs and detailed description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
