Claims
- 1. A reconfigurable dental model system comprising:a frame; a plurality of tooth members disposed on the frame; manipulation devices coupled to at least some of said tooth members for moving said tooth member(s) in at least one degree of freedom relative to the frame; and a simulated gingiva, wherein the tooth members extend through the gingiva to provide a model suitable for molding polymeric appliances thereover.
- 2. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein said frame is configured to represent a complete patient's dental arch.
- 3. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein the tooth members are coupled to the manipulation devices through ports disposed in the gingiva.
- 4. The dental model system of the claim 3, wherein the ports form a variety of shapes, including rectangular, circular, multi-sided and/or multi-curved.
- 5. The dental model system of claim 3, wherein the ports comprise a continuous channel along at least a portion of the gingiva.
- 6. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein the manipulation devices provide movement of from two to six degrees of freedom.
- 7. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein the manipulation devices are manually controlled for inputting tooth member position information.
- 8. The dental model system of claim 1, further comprising a digital processor which provides tooth member position information.
- 9. The dental model system of claim 8, wherein the processor controls the manipulation device(s).
- 10. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein said tooth members are comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of plaster, stone, acrylic, urethane, epoxy, plastics, wood, paper, metals, ceramics, and porcelain.
- 11. The dental model system of claim 1, further comprising:control mechanisms coupled to at least a portion of said simulated gingiva for reconfiguring said gingiva.
- 12. The dental model system of claim 11, wherein the simulated gingiva comprises at least one inflatable bladder.
- 13. The dental model system of claim 11, wherein the control mechanism is manually controlled for inputting gingival position information.
- 14. The dental model system of claim 11, further comprising a digital processor for inputting gingival position information and driving the control mechanisms.
- 15. The dental model system of claim 11, wherein the simulated gingiva is comprised of:a flexible sheeting; and a plurality of support shafts attached to at least a portion of said sheeting; wherein the control mechanisms are coupled to at least some of said support shafts for moving said support shaft(s).
- 16. The dental model system of claim 15, wherein the control mechanisms are manually controlled for inputting gingival position information.
- 17. The dental model system of claim 15, further comprising a digital processor for inputting gingival position information to the control mechanisms.
- 18. The dental model system of claim 1, wherein the tooth members comprise a plurality of model shafts, wherein at least some of said shafts are coupled to a control mechanism.
- 19. The dental model system of claim 18, wherein actuation of the control mechanism manipulates the model shafts to form the shape of the tooth members.
- 20. A method for fabrication of a tooth positioning appliance, said method comprising:providing a dental mold having a plurality of tooth members mechanically repositionable in a frame; manipulating one or more of the tooth members to position said tooth members in a first tooth arrangement; and molding a first appliance in the form of a plymeric shell over said mold.
- 21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:manipulating one or more of the tooth members relative to the frame to form a second tooth arrangement; and molding a second appliance in the form of a polymeric shell over said mold.
- 22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:manipulating one or more of the tooth members relative to a frame to form a third tooth arrangement; and molding a third appliance in the form of a polymeric shell over said mold.
- 23. The method of claim 20, further comprising providing a digital data set corresponding to a desired configuration wherein manipulating one or more tooth members is performed by controlling a manipulation device with a processor in accordance with the digital data set.
- 24. A reconfigurable dental model system suitable for forming molded appliances thereover, said system comprising:a frame; a plurality of tooth members disposed on the frame; and manipulation devices coupled to lower ends of at least some of said tooth members for moving said tooth member(s) in at least one degree of freedom relative to the frame, wherein upper portions of all tooth members remain exposed and available for use as a mold for forming polymeric shells thereover.
- 25. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein said frame is configured to represent a complete patient's dental arch.
- 26. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the tooth members are coupled to the manipulation devices through ports disposed in the frame.
- 27. The dental model system of claim 26, wherein the ports form a variety of shapes, including rectangular, circular, multi-sided and/or multi-curved.
- 28. The dental model system of claim 26, wherein the ports comprise a continuous channel along at least a portion of the frame.
- 29. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the manipulation devices provide movement of from two to six degrees of freedom.
- 30. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the manipulation devices are manually controlled for inputting tooth member position information.
- 31. The dental model system of claims 24, further comprising a digital processor which provides tooth member position information.
- 32. The dental model system of claim 31, wherein the processor controls the manipulation device(s).
- 33. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein said tooth members are comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of plaster, stone, acrylic, urethane, epoxy, plastics, wood, paper, metals, ceramics, and porcelain.34.The dental model system of claim 24, further comprising:a simulated gingiva; and control mechanisms coupled to at least a portion of said simulated gingiva for reconfiguring said gingiva.
- 35. The dental model system of claim 34, wherein the simulated gingiva comprises at least one inflatable bladder.
- 36. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the control mechanism is manually controlled for inputting gingival position information.
- 37. The dental model system of claim 24, further comprising a digital processor for inputting gingival position information and driving the control mechanisms.
- 38. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the simulated gingiva is comprised of:a flexible sheeting; and a plurality of support shafts attached to at least a portion of said sheeting; wherein the control mechanisms are coupled to at least some of said support shafts for moving said support shaft(s).
- 39. The dental model system of claim 38, wherein the control mechanisms are manually controlled for inputting gingival position information.
- 40. The dental model system of claim 38, further comprising a digital processor for inputting gingival position information to the control mechanisms.
- 41. The dental model system of claim 24, wherein the tooth members comprise a plurality of model shafts, wherein at least some of said shafts are coupled to a control mechanism.
- 42. The dental model system of claim 41, wherein actuation of the control mechanism manipulates the model shafts to form the shape of the tooth members.
- 43. A method for fabrication of a tooth positioning appliance, said method comprising:providing a plurality of digital data sets, wherein each set represents a successive tooth configuration from an initial configuration to a subsequent configuration; providing a dental mold having a plurality of tooth members movably positioned in a frame; manipulating one or more of the tooth members according to the digital data sets to position said tooth members in a plurality of successive tooth arrangements; and molding a plurality of appliances over said tooth arrangements provided by said mold.
- 44. The method of claim 43, wherein manipulating one or more tooth members is performed by controlling a manipulation device with a processor in accordance with the digital data sets.
