Claims
- 1. A system for producing a cranial orthosis for a patient's head, comprising:
a scanner comprising a plurality of scan devices, said scan devices arranged to scan substantially the entirety of the patient's head including the top of the head without subjecting the patient's head to distorting pressurization and arranged to produce scan data representing a three dimensional image of substantially the entirety of the head including the top of the head without introducing distortions to the head; and a computer, said computer being coupled to said scanner to receive said scan data and; a computer program executable on said computer, said computer program operable on said scan data to produce second data representative of a desired three dimensional head shape for the patient.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein:
said computer includes a display, said computer being operable to produce on said display a first image of the patient's head from said scan data.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein;
said computer program is responsive to commands to modify said first image to produce a second image and said second data from said second image, said second image being of a desired head shape.
- 4. The system of claim 3, comprising:
a machine responsive to said second data for producing a positive mold of said desired head shape.
- 5. The system of claim 2, comprising:
an anthropomorphic information database; and expert system software operable on said computer to utilize said scan data and said anthropomorphic information to produce said second data.
- 6. A system in accordance with claim 1, comprising:
a machine responsive to said second data for producing a positive mold of said desired head shape.
- 7. A method for producing a cranial orthosis for a patient, comprising:
utilizing a scanner comprising a plurality of scan devices to scan substantially the entirety of the head of the patient including the top portion of the head to produce scan data representative of a three dimensional image of the head, said scanning being performed without subjecting the head to distorting pressurization; automatically utilizing said data to produce a first three dimensional representation of the head; modifying said first representation to produce a desired corrected three dimensional shape for the head; and utilizing said desired corrected three dimensional shape to produce a cranial orthosis for the head.
- 8. A method in accordance with claim 7, wherein:
said scanning step occurs at a first location and said orthosis is produced at a second geographic location separate from said first location.
- 9. A method in accordance with claim 7, wherein:
said automatically utilizing step comprises providing said data to mold producing apparatus to produce a full size reproduction of the head of the patient.
- 10. A method in accordance with claim 7, comprising:
displaying said first representation on a computer display.
- 11. A method in accordance with claim 10, comprising:
displaying said second representation on said computer display.
- 12. A method in accordance with claim 10, comprising:
utilizing patient specific data and anthropomorphic information to modify said first representation.
- 13. A method for producing a cranial orthosis for a patient, comprising:
scanning a patient's head with a laser scanner comprising a plurality of scan elements to produce data representative of the patient's head including the top thereof; electronically transmitting said data to a computer; utilizing said computer to operate on said data to produce machine responsive data; utilizing said machine responsive data on apparatus to convert said data into a full-size reproduction of the patient's head; and utilizing said full-size reproduction of said patent's head to produce a cranial orthosis.
- 14. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
completing said scanning step in less than two seconds.
- 15. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
providing said data in a digital format.
- 16. A method in accordance with claim 13, wherein:
each of said scan elements is utilized to scan a portion of the patient's head.
- 17. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
storing information from said data in a database.
- 18. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
associating said data with patient specific information.
- 19. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
modifying said data to provide for corrections in the head shape of said patient such that said full size reproduction of the patient's head is a includes said corrections.
- 20. A method in accordance with claim 19, comprising:
utilizing said modified data to produce said machine responsive data.
- 21. A method in accordance with claim 13, comprising:
producing said cranial orthosis from a plastic outer shell and an inner foam lining.
- 22. A method in accordance with claim 21, comprising:
trimming said cranial orthosis.
- 23. A method in accordance with claim 22, comprising:
utilizing a laser trimmer to provide said trimming step.
