Claims
- 1. A gas-liquid permeable porous electrode comprising one or more electrode layers supported on one side of a substrate, wherein at least one of the one or more electrode layers comprises an electrocatalyst material, wherein the electrode layer comprising the electrocatalyst material comprises a first region adapted to be adjacent a bulk gas inlet and wherein said first region has a first amount of the electrocatalyst material, and a second region, at a point remote from the first region, said second region having a second amount of the electrocatalyst material, said second amount being different from the first, wherein the electrocatalyst material is deposited in such a manner as to form a pattern.
- 2. An electrode according to claim 1, wherein the electrode has a back side, further comprising a gas flow plate attached to the back side of the electrode, wherein the electrocatalyst material is deposited in such a manner as to coincide with a pathway of gas flow, formed by the gas flow plate, in the direction of a plane of the electrode defined by the geometry of the gas flow plate.
- 3. An electrode according to claim 1, wherein the electrocatalyst material is selected from the group of a metal, a metal oxide, a supported metal or a supported metal oxide.
- 4. An electrode according to claim 3, wherein the electrocatalyst material is selected from the group of a platinum group metal, gold or silver or alloys thereof.
- 5. An electrode according to claim 1, wherein the amount of the electrocatalyst material is in the range of 0.01-10 mg/cm.sup.2 of geometric area of the electrode.
- 6. An electrode according to claim 1, wherein said electrode forms either an anode or a cathode in a fuel cell.
- 7. An electrode according to claim 1, further comprising a gas outlet.
- 8. An electrode assembly, having at least two electrodes sandwiching a substrate, wherein one of said electrodes is according to claim 1.
- 9. A fuel cell comprising an electrode of claim 1.
- 10. A process for the production of an electrode comprising the steps of:
- (i) preparation of at least one component and a solvent into an electrocatalytic paste; and
- (ii) transferring the electrocatalytic paste onto one or more sides of a substrate to form one or more electrode layers, wherein at least one of the one or more electrode layers comprise an electrocatalyst material, wherein the at least one of the one or more electrode layers comprising the electrocatalyst material comprises the at least one component, and wherein the at least one component is present in a first amount per unit area at a first region for being adjacent a bulk gas inlet, and the at least one component is present in a second amount per unit area at a second region at a point on the substrate remote from the first region.
- 11. A process according to claim 10, wherein the at least one of the one or more electrode layers is applied in the form of a pattern.
- 12. A process according to claim 10, wherein the at least one of the one or more electrode layers is applied by using a screen printing technique.
