Claims
- 1. A real time process information system, suitable for use in connection with a high speed web converting manufacturing process for constructing a composite article from a sequential addition of component parts during a production run, said system comprising:
a communication network; an inspection system for automatically inspecting a first component part of a composite article during the production run, said inspection system providing via the communication network a first inspection parameter indicative of a characteristic of the inspected first component part; an information exchange system obtaining via the communication network the provided indication of the first inspection parameter, said information exchange system selectively providing a process display parameter corresponding to the provided first inspection parameter; and a display system obtaining the provided display parameter and selectively displaying an indication corresponding thereto.
- 2. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inspection system is configured such that the first inspection parameter comprises a numerical value and the information exchange system obtains a plurality of first inspection parameters, each associated with one of a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, said information exchange system determining a mathematical characteristic of said obtained plurality of first inspection parameters which is provided to the display system whereby the process display parameter is an indication of said mathematical characteristic.
- 3. A system as set forth in claim 2 wherein the information exchange system is configured such that the mathematical characteristic comprises an average of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 4. A system as set forth in claim 2 wherein the information exchange system is configured such that the mathematical characteristic comprises a standard deviation of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 5. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange system is configured such that the display parameter comprises a numerical value, said display system obtaining a plurality of display parameters, each associated with one of a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, said display system determining a mathematical characteristic of said obtained plurality of first inspection parameters whereby the displayed indication of the display parameter comprises displaying an indication of said mathematical characteristic.
- 6. A system as set forth in claim 5 wherein the display system is configured such that the mathematical characteristic comprises an average of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 7. A system as set forth in claim 5 wherein the display system is configured such that the mathematical characteristic comprises a standard deviation of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 8. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system is configured such that the indication of the display parameter comprises a graphical indication of the display parameter.
- 9. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system is configured such that the indication of the display parameter comprises a numerical indication of the display parameter.
- 10. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange system compares the first inspection parameter to a target and the process display parameter comprises an indication of the first inspection parameter relative to the target.
- 11. A system as set forth in claim 10 wherein the information exchange system is configured such that the target comprises a desired range of the display parameter.
- 12. A system as set forth in claim 10 wherein the information exchange system is configured such that the target comprises a desired numerical value of the display parameter.
- 13. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system compares the display parameter to a target and the displayed indication of the display parameter comprises an indication of a difference between the target and the display parameter.
- 14. A system as set forth in claim 13 wherein the display system is configured such that the target comprises a desired range of the display parameter.
- 15. A system as set forth in claim 13 wherein the display system is configured such that the target comprises a desired numerical value of the display parameter.
- 16. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inspection system provides a filter parameter indicative of whether the first inspection parameter is trustworthy.
- 17. A system as set forth in claim 16 wherein the information exchange system does not provide the process display parameter if the filter parameter indicates that the first inspection parameter is not trustworthy.
- 18. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange system compares the first inspection parameter to an out-of-bounds filter whereby the information exchange system does not provide the process display parameter if the first inspection parameter is out-of-bounds.
- 19. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system compares the display parameter to an out-of-bounds filter, said display system not displaying an indication of the display parameter if the display parameter is out-of-bounds.
- 20. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system compares the display parameter to an out-of-bounds filter, said display system not displaying an indication of the display parameter if the display parameter is out-of-bounds such that the display system displays an indication of a previously supplied display parameter.
- 21. A system as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a web converting machine converting a raw material, said web converting machine providing a machine transition indication, wherein the information exchange is responsive to the machine transition indication and executes a filtering process in response thereto such that the information exchange does not provide a process display parameter during the filtering process.
- 22. A system as set forth in claim 21 wherein the machine transition indication comprises an indication that a raw material splice is pending and the filtering process comprises disregarding first inspection parameters provided during a predetermined period after the machine transition indication is provided.
- 23. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inspection system comprises a machine vision inspection system for inspecting a constructed composite article.
- 24. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange system compares the first inspection parameter to a target and selectively provides an alarm signal as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the target.
- 25. A system as set forth in claim 24 further comprising an alarming device obtaining the alarm signal and providing an alarm to an operator associated with the manufacturing production line.
- 26. A system as set forth in claim 25 wherein the alarming device comprises a part of the display system.
- 27. A system as set forth in claim 25 wherein the alarming device provides in response to the alarm signal at least one of an audible alarm and a visual alarm.
- 28. A system as set forth in claim 25 wherein the alarming device provides an alarm message to a communication device in response to the alarm signal.
- 29. A system as set forth in claim 28 wherein the communication device is a pager, a computer, a telephone, a mobile telephone, or a portable digital assistant.
- 30. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system compares the display parameter to a target and selectively provides an alarm signal as a function of a difference between the display parameter and the target.
- 31. A system as set forth in claim 30 further comprising an alarming device obtaining the alarm signal and providing an alarm to an operator associated with the manufacturing production line.
- 32. A system as set forth in claim 30 wherein the alarming device comprises a part of the display system.
- 33. A system as set forth in claim 30 wherein the alarming device provides an audible alarm in response to the alarm signal.
- 34. A system as set forth in claim 30 wherein the alarming device provides in response to the alarm signal at least one of an audible alarm and a visual alarm.
- 35. A system as set forth in claim 30 wherein the communication device is a pager, a computer, a telephone, a mobile telephone, or a portable digital assistant.
- 36. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange system compares the first inspection parameter to a target and selectively provides a message indicating a trouble-shooting recommendation as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the target and wherein the display system obtains the provided message indicating the troubleshooting recommendation and displays said recommendation for use by the operator.
- 37. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the information exchange accumulates a plurality of first inspection parameters associated with a plurality of composite articles constructed during the production run, said information exchange determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and comparing the mathematical characteristic to a target, said information exchange selectively determines a trouble-shooting recommendation as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic and the target.
- 38. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the display system compares the display parameter to a target and selectively displays a message indicating a trouble-shooting recommendation as a function of a difference between the display parameter and the target.
- 39. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the communication network comprises a distributed node, shared memory system and wherein the inspection system, information exchange system, and display system comprise nodes of the communication network.
- 40. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inspection system automatically inspects a second component part of the composite article during the production run, said inspection system providing via the communication network a second inspection parameter indicative of a characteristic of the inspected second component part.
- 41. A system as set forth in claim 40 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter and selectively provides a second process display parameter associated with the second inspection parameter.
- 42. A system as set forth in claim 41 wherein the display system compares the first process display parameter to a first target and the second process display parameter to a second target, said display system selectively providing a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first process display parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second process display parameter and the second target, said display system applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second alarm indications.
- 43. A system as set forth in claim 41 wherein the display system compares the first process display parameter to a first target and the second process display parameter to a second target, said display system selectively providing a first trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the first process display parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the second process display parameter and the second target, said display system applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second troubleshooting indications.
- 44. A system as set forth in claim 40 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter, said information exchange comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target and the second inspection parameter to a second target, said information exchange selectively providing a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target, said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second alarm indications.
- 45. A system as set forth in claim 40 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter and wherein the information exchange compares the first inspection parameter to a first target and the second inspection parameter to a second target, said information exchange selectively providing a first trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target, said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second trouble-shooting indications.
- 46. A system as set forth in claim 40 wherein the information exchange accumulates a plurality of first and second inspection parameters corresponding to a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, and wherein the information exchange determines a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of inspection parameters, whereby the first process display parameter corresponds to the mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and the second process display parameter corresponds to the mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters.
- 47. A system as set forth in claim 40 wherein the information exchange accumulates a plurality of first and second inspection parameters corresponding to a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, said information exchange determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters, said information exchange comparing the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters to a first target and the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters to a second target, said information exchange providing a first status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters and the first target, and a second status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters and the second target, and said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second status indications.
- 48. A system as set forth in claim 47 wherein the first status indication comprises a first alarm indication and the second status indication comprises a second alarm indication.
- 49. A system as set forth in claim 47 wherein the first status indication comprises a first trouble-shooting action and the second status indication comprises a second trouble-shooting action.
- 50. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the inspection system automatically inspects first and second aspects of the first component part, the first inspection parameter being indicative of a characteristic of the inspected aspect of the first component part, and said inspection system providing a second inspection parameter being indicative of a characteristic of the second inspected aspect of the first component part.
- 51. A system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter and selectively provides a second process display parameter associated with the second inspection parameter.
- 52. A system as set forth in claim 51 wherein the display system compares the first process display parameter to a first target and the second process display parameter to a second target, said display system selectively providing a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first process display parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second process display parameter and the second target, said display system applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second alarm indications.
- 53. A system as set forth in claim 51 wherein the display system compares the first process display parameter to a first target and the second process display parameter to a second target, said display system selectively providing a first trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the first process display parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the second process display parameter and the second target, said display system applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second troubleshooting indications.
- 54. A system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter, said information exchange comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target and the second inspection parameter to a second target, said information exchange selectively providing a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target, said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second alarm indications.
- 55. A system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the information exchange obtains via the communication network the provided second inspection parameter and wherein the information exchange compares the first inspection parameter to a first target and the second inspection parameter to a second target, said information exchange selectively providing a first trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target and selectively providing a second trouble-shooting indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target, said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second trouble-shooting indications.
- 56. A system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the information exchange accumulates a plurality of first and second inspection parameters corresponding to a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, and wherein the information exchange determines a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of inspection parameters, whereby the first process display parameter corresponds to the mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and the second process display parameter corresponds to the mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters.
- 57. A system as set forth in claim 50 wherein the information exchange accumulates a plurality of first and second inspection parameters corresponding to a plurality of composite articles produced during the production run, said information exchange determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters and a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters, said information exchange comparing the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters to a first target and the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters to a second target, said information exchange providing a first status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters and the first target, and a second status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters and the second target, and said information exchange applying a logical filter to identify a priority as between the first and second status indications.
- 58. A system as set forth in claim 57 wherein the first status indication comprises a first alarm indication and the second status indication comprises a second alarm indication.
- 59. A system as set forth in claim 57 wherein the first status indication comprises a first trouble-shooting action and the second status indication comprises a second trouble-shooting action.
- 60. A system as set forth in claim 1 wherein the composite article comprises a disposable absorbent article.
- 61. A method for displaying process information to an operator, suitable for use in connection with a manufacturing production line executing a high speed web converting manufacturing process for constructing a composite article from a sequential addition of component parts during a production run of composite articles, said method comprising:
automatically inspecting a first component part of an article during the production run; providing a first inspection parameter indicative of a characteristic of the inspected first component part; storing the provided first inspection parameter in an information exchange system associated with the manufacturing production line; providing a first process display parameter corresponding to the first inspection parameter; and displaying an indication of the first display parameter to the operator.
- 62. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein the provided first inspection parameter comprises a numerical value and wherein storing the provided indication of the first inspection parameter further comprises:
obtaining a plurality of first inspection parameters, each associated with one of a plurality of articles produced during the production run; and determining a mathematical characteristic of said obtained plurality of first inspection parameters, whereby the first process display parameter comprises an indication of the mathematical characteristic.
- 63. A method as set forth in claim 62 wherein determining the mathematical characteristic comprises calculating an average of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 64. A method as set forth in claim 62 wherein determining the mathematical characteristic comprises calculating a standard deviation of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 65. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein the display parameter comprises a numerical value and displaying an indication of the display parameter to the operator further comprises:
obtaining a plurality of display parameters, each associated with one of a plurality of articles produced during the production run; and determining a mathematical characteristic of said obtained plurality of display parameters, whereby said displayed indication comprises an indication of the mathematical characteristic.
- 66. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein determining the mathematical characteristic comprises calculating an average of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 67. A method as set forth in claim 65 wherein determining the mathematical characteristic comprises calculating a standard deviation of the obtained plurality of first inspection parameters.
- 68. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein displaying the indication of the display parameter to the operator comprises displaying a graphical indication of the display parameter.
- 69. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein displaying the indication of the display parameter to the operator comprises displaying a numerical indication of the display parameter.
- 70. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein displaying the indication of the display parameter to the operator comprises displaying an indication of the display parameter relative to a target.
- 71. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising providing an indication of whether the provided first inspection parameter is trustworthy.
- 72. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising filtering the provided first inspection parameter.
- 73. A method as set forth in claim 72 wherein filtering comprises comparing the provided first inspection parameter to an acceptability filter defining acceptable values for the provided first inspection parameter and disregarding provided first inspection parameters falling outside of the acceptable values.
- 74. A method as set forth in claim 72 wherein filtering comprises determining the existence of an inspection failure associated with automatically inspecting the first component part and disregarding provided first inspection parameters corresponding to determined tool failures.
- 75. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising:
comparing the provided first inspection parameter to a target; and selectively providing an alarm indication in response to a difference between the provided first inspection parameter and the target.
- 76. A method as set forth in claim 75 wherein selectively providing the alarm indication comprises at least one of displaying an advisory indication to the operator and activating an audible alarm.
- 77. A method as set forth in claim 75 wherein selectively providing the alarm indication comprises transmitting an electronic alarm message to one or more communication devices.
- 78. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising:
comparing the provided first process display parameter to a target; and selectively providing an alarm indication in response to a difference between the provided first process display parameter and the target.
- 79. A method as set forth in claim 78 wherein selectively providing the alarm indication comprises displaying an advisory indication to the operator.
- 80. A method as set forth in claim 78 wherein selectively providing the alarm indication comprises sounding an audible alarm.
- 81. A method as set forth in claim 78 wherein selectively providing the alarm indication comprises transmitting an electronic alarm message to one or more communication devices.
- 82. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising:
comparing the provided first inspection parameter to a target; and selectively providing a troubleshooting recommendation in response to a difference between the provided first inspection parameter and the target.
- 83. A method as set forth in claim 61 further comprising:
inspecting a second component part of the article; providing a second inspection parameter, said second inspection parameter being indicative of a second characteristic of the inspected second component part; and selectively storing the second inspection parameter in the information exchange.
- 84. A method as set forth in claim 83 further comprising:
selectively providing a second process display parameter corresponding to the second inspection parameter; and displaying an indication of the second process display parameter to the operator.
- 85. A method as set forth in claim 83 further comprising:
comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target; comparing the second inspection parameter to a second target determining a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target; determining a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority between the determined first and second alarm indications.
- 86. A method as set forth in claim 83 further comprising:
comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target; comparing the second inspection parameter to a second target determining a first trouble-shooting action as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target; determining a second trouble-shooting action as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority between the determined first and second troubleshooting indications.
- 87. A method as set forth in claim 83 further comprising:
accumulating a plurality of first inspection parameters and determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters; accumulating a plurality of second inspection parameters and determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters; determining a first status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters and a first target; determining a second status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters and a second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority as between the first and second status indications.
- 88. A method as set forth in claim 87 wherein the first status indication comprises a first alarm indication and the second status indication comprises a second alarm indication.
- 89. A method as set forth in claim 87 wherein the first status indication comprises a first trouble-shooting action and the second status indication comprises a second trouble-shooting action.
- 90. A method as set forth in claim 61 wherein inspecting the first component part of the article during the production run comprises inspecting first and second aspects of the first component part and wherein the first inspection parameter is indicative of a characteristic of the first inspected aspect, and said method further comprising providing a second inspection parameter indicative of a characteristic of the second inspected aspect and selectively storing the second inspection parameter in the information exchange.
- 91. A method as set forth in claim 90 further comprising:
selectively providing a second process display parameter corresponding to the second inspection parameter; and displaying an indication of the second process display parameter to the operator.
- 92. A method as set forth in claim 90 further comprising:
comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target; comparing the second inspection parameter to a second target determining a first alarm indication as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target; determining a second alarm indication as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority between the determined first and second alarm indications.
- 93. A method as set forth in claim 90 further comprising:
comparing the first inspection parameter to a first target; comparing the second inspection parameter to a second target determining a first trouble-shooting action as a function of a difference between the first inspection parameter and the first target; determining a second trouble-shooting action as a function of a difference between the second inspection parameter and the second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority between the determined first and second troubleshooting indications.
- 94. A method as set forth in claim 90 further comprising:
accumulating a plurality of first inspection parameters and determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of first inspection parameters; accumulating a plurality of second inspection parameters and determining a mathematical characteristic of the accumulated plurality of second inspection parameters; determining a first status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of first inspection parameters and a first target; determining a second status indication as a function of a difference between the mathematical characteristic of the plurality of second inspection parameters and a second target; and applying a logical filter for identifying a priority as between the first and second status indications.
- 95. A method as set forth in claim 94 wherein the first status indication comprises a first alarm indication and the second status indication comprises a second alarm indication.
- 96. A method as set forth in claim 94 wherein the first status indication comprises a first trouble-shooting action and the second status indication comprises a second trouble-shooting action.
- 97. A method for displaying process information to an operator, suitable for use in connection with a manufacturing production line executing a high speed web converting manufacturing process for constructing a composite article from a sequential addition of component parts during a production run of composite articles, said method comprising:
automatically inspecting a component part of an article during the production run; providing an inspection parameter indicative of a characteristic of the inspected component part; selectively storing the provided indication of the inspection parameter in an information exchange system associated with the manufacturing production line; selectively providing a process display parameter corresponding to the inspection parameter stored in the information exchange system; and comparing the provided process display parameter to a target; and selectively displaying a troubleshooting recommendation to the operator in response to a difference between the provided process display parameter and the target.
