Claims
- 1. An imaging element comprising at least one image receiving layer and a support, wherein said image receiving layer comprises an open celled microcellular foam.
- 2. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said image receiving layer comprises an inkjet receiving element.
- 3. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said image receiving layer comprises a thermal recording element.
- 4. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises a foamable polymer expanded through the use of a blowing agent.
- 5. The imaging element of claim 4 wherein said foamable polymer comprises a thermoplastic foamable polymer.
- 6. The imaging element of claim 5 wherein said thermoplastic foamable polymer comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of polyolefin, polyester, polystyrene, acrylics, poly(vinyl alcohol) or polyamides or copolymers thereof.
- 7. The imaging element of claim 5 wherein said thermoplastic foamable polymer comprises polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 8. The imaging element of claim 4 wherein said blowing agent comprises a physical blowing agent.
- 9. The imaging element of claim 8 wherein said blowing agent comprises a gas.
- 10. The imaging element of claim 9 wherein said gas comprises CO2 or butane.
- 11. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises open cells less than 50 microns in average diameter.
- 12. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises open cells from 10 to 50 microns in average diameter.
- 13. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises less than 80% open cells by volume.
- 14. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises from 60 to 90% open cells by volume.
- 15. The imaging element of claim 4 further comprising a crosslinker.
- 16. The imaging element of claim 15 wherein said crosslinker comprises peroxide.
- 17. The imaging element of claim 15 wherein said crosslinker comprises from 0.01 to 10% by weight of said thermoplastic foamable polymer.
- 18. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said support comprises a cast support.
- 19. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said support comprises a coextruded support.
- 20. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said support comprises a reflective support.
- 21. The imaging element of claim 1 wherein said support comprises paper.
- 22. The imaging element of claim 21 wherein said paper comprises a low density foam core paper.
- 23. An imaging element comprising at least one image receiving layer, an absorbing layer and a support, wherein said absorbing layer comprises an open celled microcellular foam.
- 24. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said at least one image receiving layer comprises an inkjet receiving layer.
- 25. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said at least one image receiving layer comprises a thermal receiving layer.
- 26. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises a foamable polymer expanded through the use of a blowing agent.
- 27. The imaging element of claim 26 wherein said foamable polymer comprises a thermoplastic foamable polymer.
- 28. The imaging element of claim 27 wherein said thermoplastic foamable polymer comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of polyolefin, polyester, polystyrene, acrylics, poly(vinyl alcohol) or polyamides.
- 29. The imaging element of claim 27 wherein said thermoplastic foamable polymer comprises polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 30. The imaging element of claim 26 wherein said blowing agent comprises a physical blowing agent.
- 31. The imaging element of claim 30 wherein said blowing agent comprises a gas.
- 32. The imaging element of claim 31 wherein said gas comprises CO2 or butane.
- 33. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises open cells less than 50 microns in average diameter.
- 34. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises open cells from 10 to 50 microns in average diameter.
- 35. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises less than 80% open cells by volume.
- 36. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said open celled microcellular foam comprises from 60% to 90% open cells by volume.
- 37. The imaging element of claim 26 further comprising a crosslinker.
- 38. The imaging element of claim 37 wherein said crosslinker comprises peroxide.
- 39. The imaging element of claim 37 wherein said crosslinker comprises from 0.01 to 10% by weight of said thermoplastic foamable polymer.
- 40. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said support comprises a cast support.
- 41. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said support comprises a coextruded support.
- 42. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said support comprises a reflective support.
- 43. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said support comprises paper.
- 44. The imaging element of claim 43 wherein said paper comprises a low density foam core paper.
- 45. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said absorbing layer is cast onto said support.
- 46. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said absorbing layer is co-cast with said support.
- 47. The imaging element of claim 23 wherein said absorbing layer is co-extruded with said support.
