Claims
- 1. Apparatus for marbleizing molded materials, comprising
- a barrel containing an injection screw for feeding the material to be molded;
- means for injecting liquid colorant into the feed material where the screw is present;
- and means for reciprocating said injection screw to feed the material with said injected colorant and eject the material colorant directly into a mold to produce a marbleized part.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said liquid colorant is injected into said machine between a heated surface of said screw and a heated interior surface of said barrel to form a band of colorant at an intermediate level between the two surfaces and said band of colorant is maintained at an intermediate level within said melt.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said barrel is heated to facilitate the flow of the molten material.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a plurality of injections of liquid colorant are made into said molten material.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each injection of liquid colorant is of a different color to provide a multicolor marbleization effect.
- 6. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein the injection is made through a pressurized injector fitting.
- 7. Apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said mold is unbalanced.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the injecting means is proportioned for the injection of liquid colorant which has a relative viscosity which is at least substantially the same as that of the molten material.
- 9. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said injection screw is of the reciprocating type.
- 10. The apparatus as defined in claim 18 wherein said screw has a shut-off and injection of said liquid colorant is made just beyond the most rearward position of said shut-off.
