Claims
- 1. A fluid power apparatus comprising:
- a) an actuator apparatus, said actuator apparatus including an actuator body and an actuator piston rod;
- b) said actuator body having first and second actuator ports disposed adjacent said actuator piston rod and configured for moving said actuator piston rod relative to said actuator body, and said actuator body and piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable;
- c) a servo apparatus, said servo apparatus including a servo body and a servo piston rod;
- d) said servo apparatus having first and second servo ports disposed adjacent said servo piston rod and configured for moving said servo piston rod relative to said servo body, said first and second servo ports being fluidly communicable with a helm pump, and said servo body and said servo piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable;
- e) a main valve, said main valve including a valve body and a valve actuator portion;
- f) the valve body having: first and second signal ports fluidly communicating with the first and second actuator ports respectively of the actuator body; first and second helm ports fluidly communicable with a helm pump; a supply port fluidly communicable with a fluid supply source; and at least one sump port fluidly communicable with a sump;
- g) said valve body and said valve actuator portion being operatively associated with each other to control fluid flow through the ports of the valve body;
- h) a valve shifter disposed adjacent said main valve, said valve shifter configured for shifting the main valve between first and second positions thereof to change supply fluid flow through the valve;
- i) said valve shifter including a lost motion mechanism for providing pre-determined lost motion in at least one substantially rigid mechanical connection; and
- j) said at least one substantially rigid mechanical connection being disposed between at least two of the main valve, the actuator apparatus, and the servo apparatus, said lost motion mechanism providing sufficient relative movement between the valve actuator portion and the valve body to change fluid flow through the main valve in response to a change in fluid signal direction from a helm pump fluidly connected to the servo apparatus.
- 2. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein:
- a ) said actuator body and said actuator piston rod are mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal actuator axis.
- 3. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 2, wherein:
- a) said servo piston rod is extensible and retractable along a longitudinal servo axis, said servo axis being substantially parallel to said longitudinal actuator axis.
- 4. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein:
- a) at least part of said main valve, said actuator apparatus, and said servo apparatus are mechanically rigidly connected together.
- 5. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein:
- a) said valve shifter includes one valve portion rigidly connected to said actuator apparatus and another valve portion rigidly connected to said servo apparatus, the valve portions being shiftable relative to each other to change fluid flow through the valve; and
- b) said lost motion mechanism provides the pre-determined lost motion in a mechanical connection between the servo apparatus and the actuator apparatus.
- 6. A fluid power apparatus comprising:
- a) an actuator apparatus having an actuator body and an actuator piston rod, the piston rod having an actuator piston mounted thereon, the actuator body having first and second actuator ports located on opposite sides of the piston, the actuator body and piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal actuator axis;
- b) a servo apparatus having a servo body and a servo piston rod, the servo piston rod having a servo piston mounted thereon, the servo body having first and second servo ports located on opposite sides of the servo piston and being communicable with a helm pump, the servo body and the servo piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal servo axis, the servo axis being parallel to the actuator axis;
- c) a main valve having a valve body portion and a valve spool portion, the valve body portion having: first and second signal ports communicating with the first and second actuator ports respectively of the actuator body to transmit fluid therebetween; first and second helm ports communicable with the helm pump to transmit fluid therebetween; a supply port to receive supply fluid at supply pressure when available; and at least one sump port communicable with a sump; the valve portions being movable relative to each other to control fluid flow through the ports of the valve body, portions of the main valve, the actuator apparatus and the servo apparatus being mechanically rigidly connected together for concurrent simultaneous movement; and
- d) a valve shifter provided for shifting the main valve apparatus between first and second positions thereof to change supply fluid flow through the valve, the valve shifter including a lost motion device for providing pre-determined lost motion in at least one mechanical connection between two portions of either the main valve, the actuator apparatus or the servo apparatus, the lost motion device providing sufficient axial movement between the valve spool portion and the valve body portion to permit shifting of the valve portions relative to each other to change fluid flow through the main valve in response to a change in fluid signal direction from the helm pump applied to the servo apparatus.
- 7. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 6, wherein:
- a) said valve shifter includes one valve portion rigidly connected to the actuator apparatus and another valve portion rigidly connected to the servo apparatus, the valve portions being shiftable relative to each other along a valve axis disposed parallel to the actuator axis and servo axis to change fluid flow through the valve; and
- b) said lost motion device provides the predetermined lost motion in a mechanical connection between the servo apparatus and the actuator apparatus.
- 8. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 6, wherein:
- a) said valve shifter includes the main valve having one valve portion rigidly connected to the actuator apparatus and another valve portion rigidly connected to the servo apparatus, the valve portions being shiftable relative to each other along a valve axis disposed parallel to the actuator axis and servo axis to change fluid flow through the valve; and
- b) the lost motion device provides the predetermined lost motion in a mechanical connection between the servo apparatus and the actuator apparatus.
- 9. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 6, wherein:
- a) a fluid director is provided, said fluid director is configured for directing fluid supplied to the main valve, the fluid director includes a pressure responsive member communicating with the supply port of the main valve so as to be exposed to supply pressure, the pressure responsive member attaining a first or high pressure configuration when supply fluid pressure is greater than a threshold pressure, so that the main valve directs the supply fluid into the actuator apparatus, or alternatively, when the supply fluid pressure is less than the threshold pressure, the pressure responsive member automatically attains a second or low pressure configuration so that the main valve directs fluid from a helm pump to the actuator apparatus.
- 10. A steering apparatus for a marine vessel having a rudder, a helm pump, a pressurized fluid supply and a sump hydraulically interconnected, the steering apparatus comprising:
- a) an actuator apparatus, said actuator apparatus including an actuator body and an actuator piston rod;
- b) said actuator body having first and second actuator ports disposed adjacent said actuator piston rod and configured for moving said actuator piston rod relative to said actuator body, and said actuator body and piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable;
- c) a servo apparatus, said servo apparatus including a servo body and a servo piston rod;
- d) said servo apparatus having first and second servo ports disposed adjacent said servo piston rod and configured for moving said servo piston rod relative to said servo body, said first and second servo ports being fluidly communicable with a helm pump, and said servo body and said servo piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable;
- e) a main valve, said main valve including a valve body and a valve actuator portion;
- f) the valve body having: first and second signal ports fluidly communicating with the first and second actuator ports respectively of the actuator body; first and second helm ports fluidly communicable with a helm pump; a supply port fluidly communicable with a fluid supply source; and at least one sump port fluidly communicable with a sump;
- g) said valve body and said valve actuator portion being operatively associated with each other to control fluid flow through the ports of the valve body;
- h) a valve shifter disposed adjacent said main valve, said valve shifter configured for shifting the main valve between first and second positions thereof to change supply fluid flow through the valve;
- i) said valve shifter including a lost motion mechanism for providing pre-determined lost motion in at least one substantially rigid mechanical connection; and
- j) said at least one substantially rigid mechanical connection being disposed between at least two of the main valve, the actuator apparatus, and the servo apparatus, said lost motion mechanism providing sufficient relative movement between the valve actuator portion and the valve body to change fluid flow through the main valve in response to a change in fluid signal direction from a helm pump fluidly connected to the servo apparatus.
- 11. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein:
- a) said actuator body and said actuator piston rod are mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal actuator axis.
- 12. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 11, wherein:
- a) said servo piston rod is extensible and retractable along a longitudinal servo axis, said servo axis being substantially parallel to said longitudinal actuator axis.
- 13. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein:
- a) at least part of said main valve, said actuator apparatus, and said servo apparatus are mechanically rigidly connected together.
- 14. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 10, wherein:
- a) said valve shifter includes one valve portion rigidly connected to said actuator apparatus and another valve portion rigidly connected to said servo apparatus, the valve portions being shiftable relative to each other to change fluid flow through the valve; and
- b) said lost motion mechanism provides the pre-determined lost motion in a mechanical connection between the servo apparatus and the actuator apparatus.
- 15. A fluid power apparatus comprising:
- a) an actuator apparatus, said actuator apparatus including an actuator body and an actuator piston rod;
- b) said actuator body having first and second actuator ports configured so that said actuator body and said actuator piston rod are mutually extensible and retractable;
- c) a servo apparatus, said servo apparatus including a servo body and a servo piston rod;
- d) said servo apparatus having first and second servo ports fluidly communicable with a helm pump, and configured so that said servo body and said servo piston rod are mutually extensible and retractable;
- e) a main valve, said main valve including a valve body and a valve actuator portion;
- f) the valve body having: first and second signal ports fluidly communicating with the first and second actuator ports respectively of the actuator body; first and second helm ports fluidly communicable with a helm pump; a supply port fluidly communicable with a fluid supply source; and at least one sump port fluidly communicable with a sump;
- g) said valve body and said valve actuator portion being operatively associated with each other to control fluid flow through the ports of the valve body;
- h) a valve shifter disposed adjacent said main valve, said valve shifter configured for shifting the main valve between first and second positions thereof to change fluid flow through the valve;
- i) said valve shifter including a lost motion mechanism for providing pre-determined lost motion in at least one mechanical connection, and said at least one mechanical connection being disposed between at least two of the main valve, the actuator apparatus, and the servo apparatus; and,
- j) said lost motion mechanism providing sufficient relative movement between the valve actuator portion and the valve body to change fluid flow through the main valve in response to a change in fluid signal direction from a helm pump fluidly connected to the servo apparatus.
- 16. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 15, wherein:
- a) one part of at least two of said main valve, said actuator apparatus, and said servo apparatus are mechanically rigidly connected together for concurrent simultaneous movement.
- 17. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 15, wherein:
- a) a mounting bracket is hingedly attached to said actuator apparatus, and said mounting bracket is attachable to a vessel.
- 18. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein:
- a) a tiller arm is hingedly attached to said actuator piston rod; and
- b) said mounting bracket is hingedly attached to said actuator body.
- 19. A fluid power apparatus comprising:
- a) an actuator apparatus having an actuator body and an actuator piston rod, the piston rod having an actuator piston mounted thereon, the actuator body having first and second actuator ports located on opposite sides of the piston, the actuator body and piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal actuator axis;
- b) a servo apparatus having a servo body and a servo piston rod, the servo piston rod having a servo piston mounted thereon, the servo body having first and second servo ports located on opposite sides of the servo piston and being communicable with a helm pump, the servo body and the servo piston rod being mutually extensible and retractable along a longitudinal servo axis, the servo axis being parallel to the actuator axis;
- c) a main valve having a valve body portion and a valve spool portion, the valve body portion having: first and second signal ports communicating with the first and second actuator ports respectively of the actuator body to transmit fluid therebetween; first and second helm ports communicable with the helm pump to transmit fluid therebetween; a supply port to receive fluid at supply pressure when available; and at least one sump port communicable with a sump; the valve portions being movable relative to each other to control fluid flow through the ports of the valve body, one part of at least two of the main valve, the actuator apparatus and the servo apparatus being mechanically rigidly connected together for concurrent simultaneous movement; and
- d) a valve shifter provided for shifting the main valve apparatus between first and second positions thereof to change supply fluid flow through the valve, the valve shifter including a lost motion device for providing pre-determined lost motion in at least one mechanical connection between two portions of either the main valve, the actuator apparatus or the servo apparatus, the lost motion device providing sufficient axial movement between the valve spool portion and the valve body portion to permit shifting of the valve portions relative to each other to change fluid flow through the main valve in response to a change in fluid signal direction from the helm pump applied to the servo apparatus.
- 20. A fluid power apparatus as defined in claim 19, wherein:
- a) a mounting bracket is hingedly attached to said actuator apparatus, and said mounting bracket is attachable to a vessel.
