Claims
- 1. An electronic marketplace system that supports user-to-user sales of products, the system comprising:
a browsable electronic catalog that includes descriptions of products that may be listed by users for sale to other users; and a preordering component that provides functionality for a buyer to preorder a product from an unspecified seller by browsing the electronic catalog to a description of the product to be preordered and selecting a preordering option to initiate creation of a preorder listing, whereby buyers can create preorder listings for selected products;
wherein at least some of the preorder listings are displayed within the electronic catalog in conjunction with catalog descriptions of corresponding products, whereby potential sellers are notified via the electronic catalog of marketplace demand levels for specific products.
- 2. The system as in claim 1, wherein the preordering option and the preorder listings are displayed on a common product detail page of the electronic catalog.
- 3. The system as in claim 1, wherein the electronic catalog further provides an option for users to purchase products described therein from a retail merchant.
- 4. The system as in claim 1, further comprising a marketplace listing creation component that enables sellers to create marketplace product listings for selling products, wherein at least some of the marketplace product listings are displayed within the electronic catalog in conjunction with the catalog descriptions of the corresponding products.
- 5. The system as in claim 4, further comprising a matching component that matches preorder listings with marketplace product listings for fulfillment.
- 6. The system as in claim 4, wherein the marketplace listing creation component supports an ability for a seller to select a product to list for sale from a display of a personal purchase history.
- 7. The system as in claim 1, wherein the preordering component prompts a creator of a preorder listing to specify a maximum purchase price and a minimum product condition.
- 8. A method of facilitating user-to-user sales of products within an online marketplace, the method comprising:
providing a browsable electronic catalog of products that may be purchased and sold by users within the online marketplace; providing, in association with the electronic catalog, at least (a) a user option to create a marketplace listing to list a unit of a selected product for sale within the online marketplace, and (b) a user option to create a preorder listing to preorder a selected product from a seller within the online marketplace; receiving a submission from a buyer of a preorder listing for a first product, wherein the preorder listing specifies at least a minimum product condition and a maximum purchase price; receiving a submission from a seller of a marketplace listing for a unit of the first product, wherein the marketplace listing specifies a condition of the unit of the first product and a selling price; and determining whether the preorder listing and the marketplace listing match.
- 9. The method as in claim 8, wherein the user options to create a marketplace listing and to create a preorder listing are presented within a product detail page of the electronic catalog.
- 10. The method as in claim 8, wherein the user option to create a marketplace listing is presented in conjunction with a display of a personal purchase history such that a user can select a product to list for sale from the personal purchase history.
- 11. The method as in claim 8, further comprising displaying information about the preorder listing within the electronic catalog in association with a catalog description of the first product to thereby notify potential sellers of the existence of the preorder listing.
- 12. The method as in claim 8, further comprising, in response to determining that a match exists between the preorder listing and the marketplace listing, transacting a sale of the unit of the first product between the buyer and the seller.
