- 2. The masking tool (60) according to claim 1 wherein said compliant masking segments (62) are fabricated from an elastomer material.
- 3. The masking tool (60) according to claim 1 wherein said compliant masking segments (62) are fabricated from an elastomer material and said flexible back-plate (64) is formed from a metallic material.
- 4. The masking tool (60) according to claim 2 wherein said elastomer material has a Shore A Hardness of about 40.
- 5. The masking tool (60) according to claim 3 wherein said flexible back-plate (64) is fabricated from stainless steel.
- 6. The masking tool (60) according to claim 3 further comprising a power source (PS) for positively charging said flexible back-plate (64).
- 7. A masking tool assembly (90) for use in combination with a shaped workpiece (30.sub.S) in the manufacture of a precision gear (10), the shaped workpiece defining a plurality of gear teeth (12) and a tooth space surface (68) defined by and between adjacent gear teeth (12), the masking tool being operative to mask the tooth space surfaces (68) during surface deposition of a masking material (28) while facilitating deposition of the masking material (28) upon the top lands (14) of the gear teeth (12), the masking tool assembly (90) comprising:
- at least one masking tool (60) having a flexible back-plate (64) and plurality of compliant masking segments (62) bonded to and integrated by said flexible back-plate (64);
- each of said compliant masking segments (62) defining a surface geometry (66) which is substantially complementary to said tooth space surface (68) and adjacent compliant masking segments (62) defining an open-ended channel (70) therebetween; and
- clamping means (80) for forcibly urging damage to the compliant masking segments (62) into superposed engagement with the tooth space surfaces (68);
- whereby said compliant masking segments (62) prohibit deposition of the masking material (28) upon the tooth space surfaces (68) while said open-ended channels (70) permit deposition of the masking material on the top lands (14) of the gear teeth (12).
- 8. The masking tool assembly (90) according to claim 7 wherein said compliant masking segments (62) of said masking tool (60) are fabricated from an elastomer material.
- 9. The masking tool assembly (90) according to claim 7 wherein said compliant masking segments (62) of said masking tool (60) are fabricated from an elastomer material and said flexible back-plate (64) is formed from a metallic material.
- 10. The masking tool assembly (90) according to claim 7 wherein said clamping means (80) effects a contact pressure between said compliant masking segments (62) and said tooth space surface (68) of greater than about 1.0 lbs/in.sup.2 (6940 Pa).
- 11. The masking tool assembly (90) according to claim 9 further comprising a power source (PS) for positively charging said flexible back-plate (64).
