The goals of Phase l research are to refine methods for quantitative mass spectrometric immunoassay(MSIA) and to begin developing devices that enable the routine use of MSIA in the biochemistry laboratory. These devices will be further developed during Phase Il research. Phase Il research will also encompass the perfecting of methods for the routine identification and quantitation of biomolecules affinity- captured from solution and the construction of prototype devices designed for high-throughput MSIA screening. The broad, long-term goals of the proposed research are to supply these devices and methods to the public. PROPOSED COMMERCIAL APPLICATION: The routine mass spectrometric characterization of proteins, affinity- isolated from complex biological mixtures, has numerous commercial applications ranging from the quantification of biological markers indicative of disease, to the identification of genes/proteins through gene-tag inserts/MS sequencing/database search.
