Claims
- 1. A method of masterbatching comprising the steps of first making a dispersion of a solid salt of a fatty acid in a low polarity liquid as a concentrated mixture containing at least 50 percent of the solid salt of the fatty acid in the low polarity liquid, subjecting the concentrated mixture to high shearing force until the average particle size of the solid salt of the fatty acid in the low polarity liquid is less than 3 micron, and then after the desired reduction in particle size of the solid salt of the fatty acid in the low polarity liquid has been obtained, diluting the concentrated mixture with the low polarity liquid to a lower concentration containing 1-50 percent of the solid salt of the fatty acid in the low polarity liquid.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 in which the concentration of the solid salt of the fatty acid in the concentrated mixture is at least 60 percent during the high shearing step, maintaining the mixture at near ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure during this time, the solid salt of the fatty acid being magnesium stearate, and the low polarity liquid being a polydimethylsiloxane fluid having a viscosity of less than about 100 centistoke (mm2/s).
- 3. A method according to claim 2 in which the duration of the high shearing step is less than one hour.
- 4. A method according to claim 3 in which the duration of the high shearing step is less than about 30 minutes.
- 5. A masterbatched dispersion prepared according to the method defined in claim 1.
