Claims
- 1. A device for the comminution of solid material comprising:
- (a) a turbine comprising a plurality of blades mounted on a shaft for rotation about an axis, said shaft mounted in cantilevered manner in a set of bearings;
- (b) a motor;
- (c) a drive connection between said motor and said turbine for rotatably driving said turbine;
- (d) a housing enclosing said turbine having an axial inlet and a tangential outlet for the passage of an air stream caused by said rotating turbine;
- (e) means for varying the comminution effect of said device upon said material comprising varied sized replaceable expansion chambers connected at one end to the axial inlet of said housing and connected at another end to varied sized removably secured velocity chambers; and
- (f) feed tube means for feeding material to be comminuted into said air stream upstream of said velocity chamber;
- whereby, material carried in said air stream is subjected to a rapid decrease in pressure in said expansion chamber as said material is drawn through said expansion chamber, said decrease in pressure being adjustable by interchanging various sized expansion chambers to vary the size of resultant comminuted material, and said material is comminuted and is exhausted with said air stream through said housing outlet.
- 2. A device for the comminution of solid material as set forth in claim 1, further comprising:
- cooling means for cooling said bearings and said turbine shaft comprising an oil recirculation system for directing oil held in a reservoir passed said bearings and from said bearings to said reservoir through a cooling coil, whereby said bearings and said shaft are cooled by said oil, as said oil absorbs heat from said bearings as it is circulated passed said bearings.
- 3. A device for the comminution of solid material comprising:
- (a) a turbine mounted on a shaft for rotation about an axis;
- (i) said shaft mounted in cantilevered manner in a set of bearings;
- (ii) said turbine comprising a backing plate secured to said shaft, a plurality of turbine blades removably securable to said backing plate and removable locking means for holding said blades onto said backing plate;
- (iii) said turbine including means for permitting relative positional adjustments between said blades;
- (b) a motor;
- (c) a drive connection between said motor and said turbine for rotatably driving said turbine;
- (d) a housing enclosing said turbine having an axial inlet and a tangential outlet for the passage of an air stream caused by said rotating turbine;
- (e) a removable expansion chamber removably attached at one end to said housing inlet and removably attached at the other end to a velocity chamber; and
- (f) feed tube means for feeding material to be comminuted into said air stream in said velocity chamber upstream of said expansion chamber; whereby, said blades can be removed and replaced and the relative positions of said blades can be adjusted to increase the efficiency and useful life of the device;
- 4. For use in a comminution device, a turbine comprising:
- (a) a shaft mounted in cantilever fashion in a set of bearings for axial rotation;
- (b) a backing plate secured to said shaft,
- (i) said backing plate having a circumferential rim;
- (ii) said backing plate having a plurality of holes for removably mounting a plurality of turbine blades;
- (c) a plurality of turbine blades, each blade comprising:
- (i) an L-shaped bottom profile;
- (ii) a mounting leg forming the bottom of said L-shape for abutting said backing plate and having a plurality of holes for alignment with mounting holes in said backing plate for receiving threaded fasteners therethrough to removably secure said turbine blade to said backing plate;
- (iii) an upstanding leg forming the side of said L-shape for creating an air stream having a notch therein for engaging a locking ring threadably mounted on said shaft to further radially retain said blade;
- (iv) means for permitting relative positional adjustments between said blades; and
- (d) a housing enclosing said turbine having an axial inlet and a tangential outlet for the passage of said air stream caused by said rotating turbine.
- 5. A turbine as claimed in claim 4, wherein said mounting leg further comprises an arcuate bottom edge which rests against an inner edge of said circumferential rim to counteract radial forces exerted upon a blade upon rotation of said turbine shaft.
- 6. A turbine as claimed in claim 5, wherein said upstanding leg further comprises a planar back face and a curved front fact to form an air foil shape.
- 7. A turbine as claimed in claim 6, wherein said upstanding leg further comprises an axially projecting edge at the top of said L-shape forming an axially projecting wedge shape which projects outside of said housing inlet into an expansion chamber attached to said housing inlet.
