Claims
- 1. A method for reducing the concentration of oxalate in an oxalate-containing fluid wherein said method comprises contacting the fluid with at least one oxalate-degrading enzyme immobilized on a surface.
- 2. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the fluid is a biological fluid.
- 3. The method, according to claim 2, wherein the biological fluid is selected from the group consisting of blood and urine.
- 4. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the oxalate-degrading enzyme is immobilized on the surface of an in-dwelling medical device.
- 5. The method, according to claim 4, wherein the oxalate-degrading enzyme is immobilized on a surface of a catheter, stent, or dialysis membrane.
- 6. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the oxalate concentration is reduced in the fluid of a fermentation process.
- 7. The method, according to claim 6, wherein the reduction in oxalate concentration reduces the incidence of scale.
- 8. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the surface upon which the enzyme is immobilized is a polymeric material.
- 9. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the surface upon which the enzyme is immobilized is a silicone elastomer.
- 10. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the oxalate-degrading enzyme is attached to the surface through a linker.
- 11. The method, according to claim 1, wherein the surface further comprises an antimicrobial compound.
- 12. The method, according to claim 1, wherein said enzyme is selected from the group consisting of oxalate oxidase, oxalate decarboxylase, oxalyl-CoA decarboxylase, and formyl-CoA transferase.
- 13. The method, according to claim 1, wherein multiple oxalate-degrading enzymes are immobilized on the surface.
- 14. The method, according to claim 1, conducted in vivo in a mammal.
- 15. The method, according to claim 14, wherein the mammal is a human.
- 16. A surface to which at least one oxalate-degrading enzyme is attached and wherein said surface is on a dialysis membrane, an in-dwelling medical device, or in a fermentation system.
- 17. The surface, according to claim 16, wherein said in-dwelling medical device is selected from the group consisting of stents and catheters.
- 18. The surface, according to claim 16, which is a polymeric material.
- 19. The surface, according to claim 18, which is a silicone elastomer.
- 20. The surface, according to claim 16, wherein the oxalate-degrading enzyme is attached to the surface through a linker.
- 21. The surface, according to claim 16, wherein the surface further comprises an antimicrobial compound.
- 22. The surface, according to claim 16, wherein said enzyme is selected from the group consisting of oxalate oxidase, oxalate decarboxylase, oxalyl-CoA decarboxylase, and formyl-CoA transferase.
