Claims
- 1. A method of producing a digital image signal having enhanced entropy, the method comprising:
selecting one of a plurality of non-linear quantization functions based on a light characteristic of a subject to be imaged; capturing an image signal of the subject; quantizing the captured image signal utilizing the selected non-linear quantization function, to produce a digital image signal containing information about the subject.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the light characteristic of the subject is color.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the light characteristic of the subject is intensity.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the non-linear quantization function comprises a non-linear look up table.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the selecting is performed automatically.
- 6. The method of claim 1, wherein the selecting is performed based on an input received from an operator.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of non-linear quantization functions comprises a distinct non-linear look up table for each of plural wavelength bands.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein there are three wavelength bands, the wavelength bands corresponding to red, green, and blue color channels.
- 9. A camera for producing a digital image signal having enhanced entropy, the camera comprising:
light characteristic sensor producing an output; an image capture device; a programmable analog-to-digital converter connected to receive an image from the image capture device, the converter being programmed to quantize according to a non-linear quantization function selected based on the output of the light characteristic sensor; digital storage for receiving a digitized image signal from the converter, the digital image signal having enhanced entropy.
- 10. The camera of claim 9, wherein the output of the light characteristic sensor is indicative of color.
- 11. The camera of claim 9, wherein the output of the light characteristic sensor is indicative of intensity.
- 12. The camera of claim 9, wherein the non-linear quantization function comprises a non-linear look up table.
- 13. The camera of claim 9, wherein each of the non-linear quantization functions comprises a distinct non-linear look up table for each of red, green, and blue color channels.
- 14. The camera of claim 13, wherein each channel is balanced independently.
- 15. The camera of claim 13, wherein the exposure of each channel is adjusted independently.
- 16. The camera of claim 9, wherein the non-linear quantization function is intermediate between a linear function and a maximum entropy function.
- 17. A method of producing a digital image signal having enhanced entropy, the method comprising:
capturing an image signal of a subject; quantizing a first band of the captured image signal utilizing a first non-linear quantization function; quantizing a second band of the captured image signal utilizing a second non-linear quantization function; and combining the first and second quantized bands to produce a digital image signal containing information about the subject.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the first non-linear quantization function is distinct from the second non-linear quantization function.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the first non-linear quantization function is substantially the same as the second non-linear quantization function.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the first and second bands each correspond to a distinct color channel.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein at least one of the first and second bands each correspond to a band of light that is not visible.
- 22. The method of claim 17, wherein the first and second bands each correspond to a distinct spectral band other than red, green, or blue.
- 23. A method of producing a digital image signal having enhanced entropy, the method comprising:
capturing an image signal of a subject; quantizing the captured image signal at P-bit depth utilizing a substantially un-enhanced quantization function, to produce an intermediate digital image signal containing information about the subject; re-quantizing the intermediate digital image signal at Q-bit depth utilizing a non-linear quantization function, to produce a digital image signal containing enhanced information about the subject, wherein Q is smaller than P.
- 24. The method of producing a digital image signal of claim 23, wherein P=16 and Q=8.
- 25. A camera for producing a digital image of the fundus of an eye having enhanced entropy, the camera comprising:
a fundus camera; an image capture device optically coupled to the fundus camera; a programmable analog-to-digital converter connected to receive an image from the image capture device, the converter being programmed to quantize each of plural spectral bands according to a respective non-linear quantization function, the respective non-linear quantization functions being substantially different from one another; and digital storage for receiving a digitized image signal from the converter, the digital image signal having enhanced entropy.
- 26. The camera of claim 25, wherein the respective non-linear quantization functions are selected so as to suppress the red content of the digital image signal.
- 27. The camera of claim 25, wherein the programmable analog to digital converter is operated according to the method of claim 20.
