Claims
- 1. In a fiber-drawing apparatus comprising a plurality of cascaded roller pairs following one another in a direction of travel of incoming fibers to be combined into an outgoing bundle and drive means for rotating said roller pairs at relative speeds imparting a tensile stress to fibers clamped under compressive stress between the rollers of said pairs, the combination therewith of:
- stress-adjusting means coupled with rollers of said pairs;
- sensing means beyond one of said roller pairs disposed in the path of said outgoing bundle for detecting thickness fluctuations thereof;
- evaluation means connected to said sensing means for determining the extent of said fluctuations; and
- control means for setting said stress-adjusting means in a multiplicity of different positions, said control means including a microcomputer with a programmer and a data store, said programmer establishing in an initial phase of a fiber-drawing operation a succession of different settings of said stress-adjusting means for predetermined time periods enabling said evaluation means to supply said data store with a mean value for the fluctuations encountered with each setting, said data store registering the mean values pertaining to said settings and making same available at the end of said initial phase to said evaluation means for enabling same to determine the lowest of said mean values, said control means being responsive to output signals of said evaluation means for re-establishing the setting corresponding to said lowest of said mean values.
- 2. The combination defined in claim 1 wherein at least one of said roller pairs is provided with a slidable support, said stress-adjusting means comprising a servomechanism coupled with said support for modifying the tension imparted to said fibers by relatively displacing said roller pairs to vary the effective separation thereof in said direction of travel.
- 3. The combination defined in claim 1 wherein each of said roller pairs comprises a fixedly journaled lower roller coupled with said drive means and a vertically displaceable upper roller provided with loading means for biasing same under spring pressure against said lower roller, said stress-adjusting means being coupled with said loading means for varying said spring pressure.
- 4. The combination defined in claim 3 wherein said stress-adjusting means comprises a plurality of independently settable servomotors coupled with the loading means of respective roller pairs.
- 5. The combination defined in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein said drive means comprises an adjustable master oscillator, a plurality of frequency modifiers connected to an output of said master oscillator, and a plurality of electric motors respectively energized by said frequency modifiers, each of said motors being coupled with one of said roller pairs whereby said roller pairs are driven at speed ratios unaffected by any adjustment of said oscillator.
- 6. The combination defined in claim 1, 2, 3 or 4 wherein said sensing means comprises a cup with a restricted outlet carried on a free end of a resiliently cantilevered arm for limited frictional deflection by the outgoing bundle traversing said cup.
- 7. The combination defined in claim 6 wherein said arm is capacitively coupled with a transducer converting said limited deflection into an electrical signal.
