Claims
- 1. A method for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising steps of:
- (a) using a sensor to generate a signal in response to movement of the person when the person is in locomotion without exerting compression forces on the sensor to generate the signal; and
- (b) analyzing the signal to determine a moment that the foot leaves the surface during a footstep taken by the person.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising a step of:
- (c) analyzing the signal to determine a moment that the foot comes into contact with the surface during the footstep taken by the person.
- 3. The method of claim 2, further comprising a step of:
- (d) determining a foot contact time based upon a time difference between the moment the foot comes into contact with the surface determined in the step (c) and the moment the foot leaves the surface determined in the step (b).
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 5. The method of claim 3, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 6. The method of claim 3, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 7. The method of claim 3, further comprising steps of:
- (e) repeating the steps (a) (b), (c) and (d) to determine a plurality of foot contact times;
- (f) averaging the plurality of foot contact times determined in the step (e) to determine an average foot contact time; and
- (g) using the average foot contact time determined in the step (f) to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 8. The method of claim 2, further comprising a step of:
- (d) determining a foot loft time based upon a time difference between the moment the foot leaves the surface determined in the step (b) and the moment the foot comes into contact with the surface determined in the step (c).
- 9. A device for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising:
- a sensor to be supported in relation to the foot, the sensor being configured and arranged to provide an output signal in response to movement of the foot during at least one footstep taken by the person without requiring compression forces thereon to generate the signal; and
- a signal processor coupled to the sensor to receive the output signal therefrom, the signal processor being configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one moment that the foot leaves the surface during the at least one footstep.
- 10. The device of claim 9, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one moment that the foot comes into contact with the surface.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one time period that the foot was in contact with the surface during at least one stride taken by the foot based upon a time difference between the at least one moment that the foot came into contact with the surface and the at least one moment that the foot left the surface.
- 12. The device of claim 11, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one time period that the foot was in contact with the surface to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 13. The device of claim 10, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one time period that the foot was not in contact with the surface between strides taken by the foot based upon a time difference between the at least one moment that the foot left the surface and the at least one moment that the foot came into contact with the surface.
- 14. A method for monitoring activity of a person in locomotion on foot, comprising steps of:
- (a) using a first electronic device to determine at least one foot contact time of the person; and
- (b) transmitting information, via a wireless communication channel, from the first electronic device to a second electronic device, which information is based upon the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (a).
- 15. The method of claim 14, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the second electronic device to display a variable which is based upon the information transmitted in the step (b).
- 16. The method of claim 14, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the second electronic device to display a distance traveled by the person which is based on the information transmitted in the step (b).
- 17. The method of claim 14, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the second electronic device to display a pace of the person which is based on the information transmitted in the step (b).
- 18. A system for monitoring activity of a person in locomotion on foot, comprising:
- a first electronic device to measure at least one foot contact time of the person; and
- a second electronic device, coupled to the first electronic device via a wireless communication channel, to receive information from the first electronic device which is based upon the at least one foot contact time measured by the first electronic device.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the second electronic device includes a display to display a variable which is based upon the information received from the first electronic device over the wireless communication channel.
- 20. The system of claim 18, wherein the second electronic device includes a display to display a distance traveled by the person which is based upon the information received from the first electronic device over the wireless communication channel.
- 21. A method for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising steps of:
- (a) mounting a sensor above a bottom surface of the foot so that the sensor generates a signal in response to movement of the person when the person is in locomotion; and
- (b) analyzing the signal to determine a moment that a foot of the person leaves the surface during a footstep taken by the person.
- 22. The method of claim 21, further comprising a step of:
- (c) analyzing the signal to determine a moment that the foot comes into contact with the surface during the footstep taken by the person.
- 23. The method of claim 22, further comprising a step of:
- (d) determining a foot contact time based upon a time difference between the moment that the foot comes into contact with the surface determined in the step (c) and the moment that the foot leaves the surface determined in the step (b).
- 24. The method of claim 23, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 25. The method of claim 23, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 26. The method of claim 23, further comprising a step of:
- (e) using the foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 27. The method of claim 23, further comprising steps of:
- (e) repeating the steps (a), (b), (c) and (d) to determine a plurality of foot contact times;
- (f) averaging the plurality of foot contact times determined in the step (e) to determine an average foot contact time; and
- (g) using the average foot contact time determined in the step (f) to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 28. The method of claim 22, further comprising a step of:
- (d) determining a foot loft time based upon a time difference between the moment that the foot leaves the surface determined in the step (b) and the moment that the foot comes into contact with the surface determined in the step (c).
- 29. A device for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising:
- a sensor supported by the person above a bottom surface of a foot of the person, the sensor being configured and arranged to provide an output signal in response to movement of the foot during at least one footstep taken by the person; and
- a signal processor coupled to the sensor to receive the output signal therefrom, the signal processor being configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one moment that a foot of the person leaves the surface during the at least one footstep.
- 30. The device of claim 29, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one moment that the foot makes contact with the surface.
- 31. The device of claim 30, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one time period that the foot was in contact with the surface during at least one stride taken by the foot based upon a time difference between the at least one moment that the foot came into contact with the surface and the at least one moment that the foot left the surface.
- 32. The device of claim 31, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one time period that the foot was in contact with the surface to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 33. The device of claim 30, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the output signal of the sensor to determine at least one time period that the foot was not in contact with the surface between strides taken by the foot based upon a time difference between the at least one moment that the foot left the surface and the at least one moment that the foot came into contact with the surface.
- 34. A method for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising steps of:
- (a) using a sensor to generate a signal in response to movement of the person when the person is in locomotion without exerting compression forces on the sensor to generate the signal; and
- (b) analyzing the signal to determine at least one of at least one foot contact time and at least one foot loft time of the person during at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the step (a) includes a step of:
- (a1) using the sensor to generate the signal such that the signal is indicative of acceleration of a foot of the person.
- 36. The method of claim 34, wherein the step (b) includes a step of:
- (b1) analyzing the signal to determine the at least one foot contact time of the person during the at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 37. The method of claim 36, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 38. The method of claim 36, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 39. The method of claim 36, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 40. The method of claim 36, further comprising steps of:
- (c) repeating the steps (a) and (b) to determine a plurality of foot contact times;
- (d) averaging the plurality of foot contact times determined in the step (c) to determine an average foot contact time; and
- (e) using the average foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 41. A device for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface. comprising:
- (a) a sensor to be supported in relation to a foot of the person, the sensor being configured and arranged to provide a signal in response to movement of the foot during at least one footstep taken by the person without requiring compression forces thereon to generate the signal; and
- (b) a signal processor coupled to the sensor to receive the signal therefrom, the signal processor being configured to determine at least one of at least one foot contact time and at least one foot loft time of the person during at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 42. The device of claim 41, wherein the sensor includes an accelerometer.
- 43. The device of claim 41, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the signal to determine the at least one foot contact time of the person during the at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 44. The device of claim 43, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 45. The device of claim 43, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 46. The device of claim 43, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 47. A method for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising steps of:
- (a) mounting a sensor above a bottom surface of a foot of the person so that the sensor generates a signal in response to movement of the person when the person is in locomotion; and
- (b) analyzing the signal to determine at least one of at least one foot contact time and at least one foot loft time of the person during at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 48. The method of claim 47, wherein the step (a) includes a step of:
- (a1) using the sensor to generate the signal such that the signal is indicative of acceleration of the foot.
- 49. The method of claim 47, wherein the step (b) includes a step of:
- (b1) analyzing the signal to determine the at least one foot contact time of the person during the at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 50. The method of claim 49, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 51. The method of claim 49, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 52. The method of claim 49, further comprising a step of:
- (c) using the at least one foot contact time determined in the step (b) to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 53. The method of claim 49, further comprising steps of:
- (c) repeating the step (b) to determine a plurality of foot contact times for a plurality of footsteps taken by the person;
- (d) averaging the plurality of foot contact times determined in the step (c) to determine an average foot contact time; and
- (e) using the average foot contact time determined in the step (d) to determine at least one of a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface, a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion, and an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
- 54. A device for analyzing activity of a person in locomotion on foot on a surface, comprising:
- (a) a sensor to be supported by the person above a bottom surface of a foot of the person, the sensor being configured to generate a signal in response to movement of the person when the person is in locomotion; and
- (b) a signal processor coupled to the sensor to receive the signal therefrom, the signal processor being configured to determine at least one of at least one foot contact time and at least one foot loft time of the person during at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 55. The device of claim 54, wherein the sensor includes an accelerometer.
- 56. The device of claim 54, wherein the signal processor is configured to analyze the signal to determine the at least one foot contact time of the person during the at least one footstep taken by the person.
- 57. The device of claim 56, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine a rate at which the person is moving relative to the surface.
- 58. The device of claim 56, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine a distance traveled by the person while in locomotion.
- 59. The device of claim 56, wherein the signal processor is configured to use the at least one foot contact time to determine an amount of energy expended by the person while in locomotion.
