Claims
- 1. A mechanical seal and seat assembly of the class wherein a relatively movable seal and seat therefor have confronting lapped sealing interfaces to seal off a fluid which wets the interface and wherein the seat has an interface microhardness in the range of at least about 200 kilograms per square millimeter, the seal being formed by homogeneously dispersing non-abrasive particles in a particulate matrix mix comprising hydrocarbon binder and graphite, compressing the mix and particles into seal form, and baking the seal to substantially dehydrogenize the binder to create a non-graphitic free carbon bond for the graphite and particles, the seal having said particles in said seal interface; and the particles having a microhardness in the range of at least about 200 kilograms per square millimeter and being of a size, hardness and shape to be non-abrasively smooth to the seat interface.
- 2. The improvement of claim 1 wherein said non-abrasive particles are less than 10 percent by weight of the seal.
- 3. The improvement of claim 1 wherein one of the seal and seat members is a stationary member and the other member is a rotating member.
- 4. The improvement of claim 3 wherein the member composed of a filled graphitic matrix is the rotating member.
- 5. The improvement of claim 4 wherein the stationary member is composed of cast iron and the non-abrasive particles in the rotating member have a microhardness of about 200 to 4500 kilograms per square millimeter.
- 6. The improvement of claim 5 wherein the non-abrasive particles in the rotating member are selected from the group consisting of nepheline syenite and quartz.
- 7. The improvement of claim 4 wherein the stationary member is composed of alpha-alumina ceramic and the non-abrasive particles in the rotating member are selected from the group consisting of alpha-alumina and tungsten carbide.
- 8. The improvement of claim 4 wherein the stationary member is composed of chrome plated steel and the non-abrasive particles in the rotating member have a microhardness of about 200 to 4500 kilograms per square millimeter.
- 9. The improvement of claim 8 wherein the non-abrasive particles in the rotating member are selected from the group consisting of quartz and tungsten carbide.
- 10. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the stationary member has a microhardness of about 200 to 4500 kilograms per square millimeter.
- 11. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the non-abrasive particles have a particle size in the range of about 100 microns.
- 12. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the non-abrasive particles are smooth surfaced and curvilinear.
- 13. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the volume of the non-abrasive particles is about 0.025 to 45 percent of the volume of the matrix.
- 14. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the non-abrasive particles have a particle size in the range of about 0.1 to 100 microns.
- 15. A mechanical seal member for use with a seat having an interface microhardness in the range of at least about 200 kilograms per square millimeter and composed of a graphitic matrix filled and carbon bonded with non-abrasive particulate matter having a microhardness of about 200 to 4500 kilograms per square millimeter, a particle size of about 0.1 to 100 microns, the volume of said filler matter being about 0.025 to 45 percent of the volume of the matrix.
- 16. The improvement of claim 1 wherein the seat is an alumina ceramic and the non-abrasive particles comprise calcined alpha-alumina.
- 17. A mechanical seal and seat assembly of the class wherein a relatively movable seal and seat therefor have confronting lapped sealing interfaces to seal off a fluid which wets the interface and wherein the seat has an interface microhardness in the range of at least about 200 kilograms per square millimeter, the seal being formed by homogeneously dispersing carbide forming particles in a particulate matrix mix comprising hydrocarbon binder and graphite, compressing the mix and particles into seal form, and baking the seal to substantially dehydrogenize the binder to create a non-graphitic free carbon bond for the graphite and to form dispersed carbide particles in situ in said matrix at said seal interface; and the particles having a microhardness in the range of at least about 200 kilograms per square millimeter and being of a size, hardness and shape to be non-abrasively smooth to the seat interface.
- 18. The improvement of claim 17 wherein the carbide particles have a microhardness in the range of 200 to 4500 kilograms per square millimeter.
- 19. The improvement of claim 17 wherein the carbide particles are tungsten carbide.
