Claims
- 1. A disk drive comprising:
a cartridge tray for receiving a cartridge, said cartridge containing a data storage disk, said cartridge comprising an alignment opening; an XY alignment pin for engaging said alignment opening so as to assist in locating said cartridge in X and Y dimensions; a theta datum for engaging an edge of said cartridge; a first mechanism for pressing said cartridge against said alignment pin; and a second mechanism for pressing said edge of said cartridge against said theta datum.
- 2. The disk drive of claim 1 comprising at least three Z datums for positioning said cartridge in a Z dimension.
- 3. The disk drive of claim 2 wherein said at least three Z datums comprise a first Z datum located at a base of said XY alignment pin.
- 4. The disk drive of claim 3 wherein said at least three Z datums comprise a second Z datum located at a base of a Y limiter.
- 5. The disk drive of claim 4 wherein said at least three Z datums comprise a third Z datum located at a base of said theta datum.
- 6. The disk drive of claim 5 wherein said second and third datums operate as a single datum.
- 7. The disk drive of claim 2 wherein said at least three datums comprise a second Z datum located at a base of said theta limiter.
- 8. The disk drive of claim 1 wherein said first mechanism comprises a picker arm, said picker arm being mounted so as to pivot about a pin.
- 9. The disk drive of claim 8 wherein said first mechanism comprises a picker arm spring positioned so as to bias said picker arm rotationally around said pin.
- 10. The disk drive of claim 9 wherein said picker arm and said picker arm spring combine to apply a force against said cartridge, thereby pressing said cartridge against said XY alignment pin.
- 11. The disk drive of claim 1 wherein said second mechanism comprises a shutter mounted in said cartridge.
- 12. The disk drive of claim 11 wherein said second mechanism contains a shutter return spring positioned so as to bias said shutter towards a closed position.
- 13. The disk drive of claim 12 wherein said shutter and said shutter return spring combine to apply a force against said cartridge, thereby pressing said edge of said cartridge against said theta datum.
- 14. A disk drive containing a data storage cartridge, said cartridge being mounted in an operational position such that data can be read from and/or into said data storage disk, said cartridge being located in said operational position by:
an XY alignment member that engages a feature of said cartridge so as to define the position of said cartridge in an X dimension and a Y dimension; a theta datum that engages said cartridge so as to define the position of said cartridge in a theta rotational dimension; and at least three Z datums that engage a surface of said cartridge so as to define the position of said cartridge in a Z dimension.
- 15. The disk drive of claim 14 comprising a mechanical linkage which forces said cartridge against said at least three Z datums.
- 16. The disk drive of claim 15 wherein said mechanical linkage is driven by an electric motor.
- 17. The disk drive of claim 16 wherein said mechanical linkage cannot be driven backwards by a force on said cartridge when said cartridge is held in said operational position.
- 18. The disk drive of claim 16 wherein said mechanical linkage includes a lead screw mechanism.
- 19. A method of positioning a data storage cartridge in a disk drive comprising:
biasing an alignment feature of said cartridge against an XY alignment pin so as to position said cartridge in X and Y dimensions; biasing said cartridge against a theta datum so as to position said cartridge in a theta rotational dimension; and biasing said cartridge against at least three Z datums so as to position said cartridge in a Z dimension.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein said alignment feature comprises an opening, said method comprising:
positioning said cartridge in a cartridge tray, said cartridge tray having a pair of coaxial tray pins; applying a force to said tray pins so as to lower said cartridge tray and said cartridge towards said XY alignment pin; rotating said cartridge tray and said cartridge about an axis defined by said tray pins; and causing said XY alignment pin to enter said opening.
